We stumbled upon this 1938 Chevy the other day that runs, drives and is in good condition. We left without buying it but quickly turned around to see if Terry would take us for a drive in it. If it runs good, we're going to buy it and ' Vice Grip Garage ' it and drive it home 💰

Chad prior to any rescue you had best improve your skillset to include: Engine analysis Carburation Brakes Fueling For abandoned cars that have been sitting for a long time. Then preserve back to new. No chopping, turning into a car/truck art. Only then should you use Vice Grip Garage references. Derek Bieri preserves automobiles from going to the crusher and or parting out. You create your art. Very different preservation purposes.

Chad & Jolene, congratulations on your purchase seems to be a really nice car. Have fun with it and if it was me I would just put the money into the interior and go from there. That is a solid car and a good investment, I think it will only gain value especially being a 2 dr. Maybe have Nathan take a look at it and see if he thinks the stalling problem is an intake leak and if so you have the gaskets already. I would not concern yourself with Vice Grip Garage he has been at it for quite a few years and he is mechanical and also involved in racing now.

Nothing about this is vice grip style, Derek goes out and finds cars that have been sitting in the weeds for 20 years that don’t run or drive and gets them going with minimal tools.

Hi Jolene and Chad, My neighbor over a couple roads had a '38 Chevy Hump Back that they was painted two tone. It looked amazing, they had it a light brown/tan and copper/bronze one on top and the other on the bottom. It has been a long time since I have saw it, the gentleman that owned past away several years ago and have not seen it since. I know they had it for sale and were asking $38,000.00. I do not know what engine they had or if it was original, but it was clean and nice looking. Take care

Make a great project for a video build . People have to keep that in mind with Chad . It's a business and you have to have project cores around . I would not look at this as keeping it all original . Have your way with it man . Let's see what's you and your lovely partner can dream up with this old girl . Yes, definitely! I allways wanted a 41 chev myself but never got one. Nor sure if this is the same body style or not. There was something different went on back then due to wars. Please dont chop or customize, it is too rare, pristine and close to original to lose and you have proven you can recreate whatever you want on your own.

Congratulations on your purchase of an original 1938 Chevy two door. Only thing it really needs is a new interior. I don't think this car needs a hair cut. Doing so would only devalue the car. Original cars like this are very hard to find in this condition. Jolene is doing a great job with the camera. I hope your son is doing better. I been keeping him in my thoughts and prayers.

You made each other's day, all my stuff is old & I run 🏃‍♀️ Rotella T6 15/40 Synthetic in everything no worries. Just don't use the fuel saving 0 wt. Synthetic. I would leave that car basically stock, at least visibly. You need to work on your downshifts so you don't slip the clutch, blip the throttle.....

I remember my dad had a 39 Chevy just like that. Foot starter pedal, hood went up from each side, vacuum wipers, had to let off the gas when going up hill. No turn signals, backup lights, radio, no outside mirrors etc.

Love the old Chevy! I think that is a limited edition, the long back window is kinda rare. You get that exhaust leak fixed it will run like a different car. You also have a vacuum leak. and I don't think the setting on the points is 40. (too wide) enjoy

All that I can say is this the you got the car from a honesty person, and in its very original condition. The stalling is not much of the issue, except cleaning of the fuel line ,carburetor and tuning and there you go off with beautiful engine.

Looks to be good driver, for its age. Sounds right and he is not sawing away at the wheel going down the road. Chad, its only money and you love cars and will do right by it. No brainer to me and for 9,000 Canadian that is a decent buy. They are not making many real survivors. Good choice, keep it original and drive it

Hi Chad, in the late 70's I had a 39 Chevrolet businessmans coupe on my used car lot in Youngstown Ohio. My Mom called and asked if I could take my great grandmother to her doctor appointment. I decided to take the 39 Chevrolet. Grandma was so happy that it was easy to get in and out of.

The reason for choke is because the intake manifold is leaking. It's allowing more air into the cylinders and leaning out the fuel mixture.

Would rather see you spend the money for a mechanic to do the Thunderbird, an interior for the Thunderbird, paint and interior for the last two classic you bought. Mechanical ie steering etc for the Doodle bug, as well as windows and interior. Maybe get the Elvis car running.

There's an old, old axiom in the collectible car field: A car is only original once. If you paint it, it's no longer original, it's restored. Same for upholstery, engine, or anything else on the car. NTTAWWT, it's just that "original" and "restored" are not the same. 😉

Sounds like "wants" are overtaking "needs" again. Make sure you do due diligence to a greater level this time and if you do buy it accept the fact that there will be money needing to be spent on "unexpected" repairs. It is an old car and old cars tend to need a lot of maintenance.

Chad and jolene great buy hopefully it drives well and if you change the inlet gasket and its still the same at junctions it could possibly be one of the breather lines blocked a little with carbon I've seen lots of old cars do this. All you do is make sure the pipes are clear and we're they plug on to .just dig it out if blocked. Keep up the great work the both of you 👏 👍

I think it needs a valve adjustment,fix the intake leak, New 140 weight gear oil in the transmission Maby mix some grease in with it. To quiet down first and second gear. It seems to roll like a new car.

I would paint that car Ivory White black tinted windows with the extended exterior visor at the top of the windshield with a really nice set of spoke wire wheels with the big white walls and they make a set of long tube Chrome air horns. There's a lot of options that came with that car that you Don't see. Simply because these cars have lost their popularity throughout the years

You used to be able to buy colored spray dye in various colors to spray the ceiling cloth of those old cars. The ceiling clothe looks in good shape except for the coloring and yellowing.

I love the Streamliner look to this car I would be thinking about how best to modernize it . Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 6 cylinder automatic drive train possibly. Power brakes for sure.

I am glad you both made up your minds to buy the car, I am into old cars.MYself I would not chop this car, you have a piece of history that many people would like to have. Your are very fortunate to come across this car in this day and age. The only thing I feel sad about is the gentlemen that sold you the car, I am sure that it hurt him to sell it. @radtek2 0 seconds ago My first car was a 38 Chev. It was 4 door. I was 16 in 1962 and bought it for $15! I fixed it up a bit replace a bad head gasket and sold it for $150, 3 months later. I notice this one has a straight front axle mine had what they called Knee Action suspension didn't care that was bit bouncy.

I would have wanted to do my own driving if I was seriously interested in buying the car. The gray painted dash indicates it was a standard model Chevy, as I recall. The deluxe model would have been woodgrained.
