Mike has been going a bit V10-mad lately, be it Dodge Vipers or V10 TVRs. And with his V10 MX-5 project being delayed until 2022, he's decided to get a ready-made V10 in his life as a daily? What should he go for? You decide!

You have my vote. I daily drive an e60 M5. It’s awesome. I love the Smg 7 speed transmission. The shift speed is adjustable, if you turn it up to 6 it shifts in .4 seconds. Driving the car takes me away from the troubles of the world. I do all my own maintenance and repairs. It’s great to work on. Keep it full of the proper oil and don’t lug the engine to extend the life of the rod bearings. I have 100% confidence in my M5 and when it has a fault, I fix it. Cheers from the USA.

There's no other car like it (E60 M5), that V10 is EVERYTHING. I have had F10 M5 Competitions, M4 Competitions and driven numerous other high performance cars...there is nothing in terms of a full package that comes close to the incredible driving experience that the V10 M5/6s gives you until you get in a supercar. I'm currently running the only full-carbon plenum prototype in the world made by Eventuri with their intakes along with a custom made exhaust from Akrapovic and to me it's genuinely the best sounding car in the world. The banshee-like scream between 7-8.5K RPM is like no other along with the Aventador-like kick in the head shift that comes after, just an absolute beast. Then you've got features like Active Seats that just take the experience to the next level that even the M6 unfortunately didn't get. Jeremy Clarkson just a week after reviewing the Ferrari F430 that it was the best car he's ever driven, says everything. A legend forever...but I'd never run one without a warranty (over £30K and counting in 4 years as a weekend car!). Though with basic preventative maintenance these cars are the best value for money car you can get. I'm on IG: blackbmwlife :)

I bought an e63 M6 in April, absolutely loving it. The gearbox gets less irritating over time, you learn to use the throttle pedal to 'make' it shift when you want it to in auto mode. A set of slightly stiffer springs make them a lot livelier in corners and don't seem to make the ride much worse as they do in lighter cars. The way I look at it, the opportunity to have a 500bhp V10 is not going to be around forever!

I've had my M6 (same blue) for over 8 years, and it still puts a smile on my face, don't think I'll ever sell it, I get why people moan about the SMG but I wouldn't have it any other way I think it great, the punch you get at full chat when changing gear just adds to the experience, DC is great but you lose the rawness....14 years old and there's still not much that keeps up with it as far as daily drivers go, and sounds soooo much better than the turbo's do!

These cars are amazing, particularly even in manual. You simply have to conduct your maintenance preventatively which is no problem. The issue with these cars is they are affordable, and so most people that pick them up are broke and end up not spending any money on preventative maintenance. Even the SMG is a misunderstood transmission. It has lubrication issues, and is very easy to maintain and prevent from breaking with proper lubrication, that's it.
@akaadamrg
@akaadamrg 2 года назад
Had the M5 and can tell you you're wrong. While the car is absolutely amazing, it broke monthly for years. I had the SMG (it's faster than they say here in it's fastest setting at 65ms.) And while it was only a matter of time, that part didn't break. I did have a gasket leak all the transmission fluid on to my clutch and flywheel ($12,000 gasket failure). Each of the four actuators have weak plastic parts and the teeth wear out on every one. At $1000 each plus hours of labour - just do them all at once. At just 130,000 my catalytic converters were inefficient. All four of them needed to be replaced and two are built into the headers. Want to change the battery? Better have a bmw dealer close. Oil change? 9 liters of $20/l oil. Windshield? $1500 if you have the HUD. But that sound 🤤. I refer to that car as my crazy ex girlfriend. A wicked fun ride but she has some screws loose

As a big BMW guy (and a life long BMW owner) I'd love to see this on the channel! If you rebuild the engine fix the bearings and the other few wearables and known issues it should be fine for a quite a long time...especially if you look after it properly and change the engine oil much more frequently...like every 15000km max. Sure it might not be the prettiest BMW out there but it is an interesting looking car and you will never mistake it for something else. Totally unique looking vehicle...and that's always something to admire....well okay maybe not if's a Fiat Multipla...but that's another story from (most likely) another planet. So yeah. Go for it! I for one would love to see it! And would love to see a proper restoration video especially of that magnificent engine!

Mike, you are still young. Patience will put you in a V10 soon enough, and it will be a special V10 from a unique manufacturer in a sports-built chassis from a reputable company. The BMW is just you not being willing to wait.

lol rod bearings are not the only reason they are cheap, you were right about the fuel consumption.. 7-10mpg is about right for around the town. Neighbour had one from new for about 4 years but sold it at 85,000 miles after his service / repair was 14,000 and something else broke shortly afterwards.

So I owned a pristine 2010 M5, and I purposely wanted the SMG. It fits the purpose of the car better (luxury GT). Like a manual, SMG requires finesse and practice to drive correctly and smoothly. These are definitely heavy, but absolutely nothing short of a Honda S600 (which I own) or a Lexus LF-A or Carerra GT offers sounds as intoxicating as this engine.

I owned an E60 M5 for 4.5 years after E39 M5 ownership. After the E60 M5 I owned an F10 M5. The E60 M5 is just an Epic car with so much soul and character which the later cars lack even though they have a lot more power. When my SMG pump gave up I decided to converted my E60 M5 to 6 speed manual with OE parts same as North American cars. I have since converted 2 E60 M5 to 6 speed manual in the UK and onother on its way. I loved my E60 M5 both in SMG and 6 speed manual, it has so much soul and character its pretty much irreplaceable with anything else and you should 100% go for it and do a buy.

You’ve got to get the M6. I own a e90 335i with the N54 and it’s so fun to drive and I’m sure the M6 is even better. Also, the opportunities that come along with BMW ownership are crazy. I got my license a month ago, and I’ve already been featured in a magazine, driven Sebring and gone to car shows. BMW ownership is the best.

An OK at best, money pit, just for V10 kudos.. the idea of possessing it is almost certainly more exciting than actually having it (like your high-school crush). No one will be able to convince you not to get into it, but as soon as you have it you'll start to look for something else.

Yes you should get a M6 and the first thing I would do is to do gearbox swap and fix all other issues with it

9:11 ABSOLUTELY!!!!! but the first thing to get serviced HAS to be the rod bearings. upgrade it if possible.

The thing is, if you can afford a car with high fuel consumption and which might require parts to be replaced, you should definitely buy it. For 10000, you're getting a V10 BMW. Also, the extra money you might spend on buying a brand new car can be spent on the mods or this one.

believe me the extra money saved from not buying a new car will still end up being spent on repairs

Whatever upgrades you're thinking about doing, don't forget the tow hook. For towing fuel which you will undoubtedly spend while driving around, because that sucker is thirsty.

I daily drive my E60 M5, it's an acquired taste but there is no noise like it. Had 14k miles of totally trouble free motoring last year.. just buy one!
