7 people in our household...we lived in 600 square feet ghetto condo for 10 years..upgrade to 800 square feet ghetto duplex for another 10 years...and then my parents bought their 1st 2,200 square feet home in a “decent” neighborhood and paid it off in 2 years...they bought all of us 5 kids our 1st car in cash when we attended college. It’s hard to look at the big picture when you are struggling but it’s worth it at the end. Oh forgot to mention my parents are 1st generation immigrant factory worker making minimum wages since 1990.

My sister had a friend who had immigrated with her siblings and parents. Her mom stayed with the kids in a tiny home at first, while her husband lived and worked like crazy in another city with a family member. He saved the money, those three years the girl was in middle school, to buy a new house in a nice neighborhood for cash. He did not consider a mortgage, as he did not understand or trust that idea. They were so proud of that home and how they had worked together, though separated, to have a better life. The dad had some powerful references toward getting a local job, too.

My comment was meant as an encouragement and not to start a thread of back and forths. My wife and I sleep in OUR room, the kids get what they get, they’ll live and should be grateful for two loving parents and roof over their heads w food as a bonus :) (Joke for all those sensitive ppl) the point is.... we live on less than we make, we live on a WRITTEN budget, and everything will be ok ESPECIALLY when we keep our emotions in check. It’s not forever, just temporary

I am guessing you live in a safe suburb or rural area with warm weather. I live with my 4 children too, but when winter hits, it is difficult with no yard , etc. Great that you are pulling it off. As they grow, I feel that we need a bigger space.

Its hard to see all of this money coming in and not seeing the house situation getting better but they still have 59k in debt. it's just not the right time.

T3v0, I agreed with you until you disrespected her for being a stay at home mom. Having been always been a worker and then a working mother, I chose to stay home when our second son was born. It is hard work to be a stay at home parent of 3 little ones, especially when homeschooling them. A stay at home parent is usually doing all the cleaning, cooking and shopping too. Seriously, most stay at home moms and dads deserve a lot more respect than they get. I will say, she came across as spoiled and not financially as responsible as her husband.

Antoine Carey You talk like there are options when you have three kids under six. IF Child care was available, what would it cost for three kids? Answer is ”way more than she would be making”. If roles were equal, you think Dad is going to do half of the laundry, housework, shopping, cooking, child care and homeschooling? If so, I have a bridge to sell you. I see my daughter in this same situation although thankfully in a bigger house with a yard. She never stops. Has a helpful husband but he has a job where he is fried when he gets home. They have always been in agreement with her being home and he respects what she is doing for their family.

She is excited about the potential of the business and wants to get into a new big house and doesn't think there's any chance the money is gonna stop. Husband actually has the stress of running and working the business and bringing home the money, providing for 5 people, etc. I agree she is being starry eyed over the money and he is being conservative and responsible. Even when you start making good money you gotta follow the plan or you'll be in over your head in no time.

Why is she sleeping on the floor, possibly with the kids, while being told that her husband is making thousands (she is not aware of the rest of his picture). Does he have a big picture for them in mind? Is he shorting family to get "his" business in a "great" place ? Dave is right, they need to be working together on this. We were a family of 5 living in a 2 bedroom apartment and I had more fun as a kid playing with other kids in the building than when we moved to a big house with two family rooms. Moving from an apartment to a house did not make my parents happier.

DList Lover We lived in a 2 bedroom with one bathroom with a growing family, 2 adults, 3 kids. Our home was 950 sq ft. We moved to a home that was 1400 sq ft with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms after living in the small house for 18 years. It did make us happier to move to a larger, nicer home in a better location!

Mossy Oak Mom Yeah, well my mom was always pushing for a house and a bigger house... my dad was cracking under the pressure with no support. Things got out of hand and pretty bad from that. If my dad was just a little bit as responsible and careful as the husband/partner in this call and if my mom was more patient and supportive in taking time to build financial stability things could have turned out a lot different.

DList Lover We didn’t live above our means so that’s why we eventually were able to move to a bigger, nicer home. We live in So Cal where real estate can be pretty pricy. All I’m saying is the reason we lived in the little house so long was because we couldn’t afford more all those years. It is much more enjoyable to be able to move to a better home if you aren’t stressed about living above what you can afford.

Mossy Oak Mom Interesting... I live in SoCal too... all my life! Cool, we are neighbors. We went from living in a trailer to living in a shack my dad built in his business shop (no bathroom) then apartments. My mom kept pushing for the house and he had it in his mind that that’s what would make my mom happy and our family “better off” for various reasons. Of course, for our family, it had the opposite effect. The focus was in the wrong place... the value being on bigger is better instead of prioritizing security, stability, and patience in reaching long term goals “smart”. Went through a failed marriage that mirrored the same dynamic and finally met someone who prioritizes these values. It’s enlightened me and offers those qualities/values that were nonexistent in my childhood.

Fancier/bigger houses drop more in a market crash..smaller houses hold value better...over $pent buyers need to downsize in a crash and start looking at smaller houses.. people on the bottom / in bad financial shape get pushed outta the market

I love that she threw in that she was 'sleeping on the floor' as well. Did I mishear that? If you have a two bedroom house and only 3 small kids, they all share a room. Mom doesn't need to sleep on the floor. We have been in an apartment smaller than that with 3 kids older than hers and I never had to sleep on the floor 😂 This lady is *dramatic.*

I lived in a 2bd/2ba 1100 sq ft house with 4 kids. It was a blessing because it was so cheap and another huge blessing when I sold it for way more than I bought it for. Live like no one else now so you can live and give like no one else later! When the kids are little it's honestly much easier to cram in a small house.

My husband and I purchased a similar sized home with 1 bathroom for our family of four several years ago. The widow we purchased it from lived there for 40 years and raised 6 children there. I didn't think it was a big deal at all. Like Dave said, it won't kill you.

Lot of moms sound frantic right now. She has had six months+ of being cooped up with three very young kids and with a five year old will probably be homeschooling. felt bad about myself for awhile...been sleeping on the floor most of my life. but its ok... no debt, with savings, invested and happy..can sleep peaceful at night... Many people are saying this lady sounds spoiled and like a teenager. But remember she’s a stay-at-home mum to three little children, stuck in a two-bedroom with no yard. I’m not saying it can’t be done or that others haven’t done it before. But I’ve been there, done that, and it’s HARD WORK. And you go a little crazy day in, day out. Not that I would have done it differently for our two children, but please show some grace towards this woman. I hear the desperation in her voice...

We are in 800sq feet with FOUR😭 Every day I am utterly desperate to move out...but we are about half way through step 3, our FFEF. It's a multi family and we own and occupy-3 units, have one tenant. The unoccupied one and the one we occupy both need a ton of repairs to make them rentable...yes ours too. The other unit has no utilities atm and needs heating system. Our unit thankfully is all cosmetics (not upgrades...replacements because we have badly damaged linoleum, walls to paint, an entire bathroom that needs to be gutted and everything replaced...apartment grade of course). As desperate as we are...the slow path will mean we can buy a nice single family home that will be better suited to our family, and we will have this income property.

It's difficult because American's grow up with so much space that 1100 sq ft with 5 people is so terrible. The rest of the world have much less space and accept it. I grew up in a house barely 800 sq ft and there were 6 of us. One house we lived in when we were young only had 2 bedrooms. Parent brought 2 bunk beds and put all 4 of us in the same room. Not sure why she is sleeping on the floor.. If the current house is going to be difficult to sell, then go ahead and sell now and rent. Then wait for the market to crash next year and buy. How many of us have watched house hunters and the couple are expecting their first child and need to move out of their 1500 sq ft house so baby can enjoy 3200 sq feet and room for the dog to hunt on..

Yeah it's funny because I took Financial Peace like I mean it was a long time ago already Rachel wasn't even 18 yet for sure and she had come out and spoke to the audience and she just seemed so well put together like the way she talked and she even told a couple of jokes made everybody laugh and it looks like everybody in the audience was pretty impressed I know I was and then Dave comes back out and they were doing something about the topic was teaching your kids how about money so changing your family tree or something like that and after they've came back on the stage he was like all proud but it's crazy now seeing that she actually has her own book out and she's actively working in the company but I'm not surprised seeing how she was back then

I don't believe the market it going to crash as bad as 2008. I do believe there will be a correction and prices will go down but not drastically. Either way I got my money ready when the time comes.
