First off, and this might take a while so first-and-foremost Mr. Steve Knight hats off to you for breaking down this video. You didn't have to do it, but your efforts have not gone unnoticed.
They should put in their contract "Don't sell albums to white people". They ain't worried about where the green comes from. I skipped high-school the day Doggystyle got released because we all bumped that. 90's rap blew up because white people bought into it. This is ridiculous.
Yep! When hip-hop got deep into the suburbs with the Beastie Boys, EVERY hip-hop artists record sales went up. It's not like the kids in the suburbs just wanted to listen to white rappers, that's dumb. They were introduced to a style of music they never understood and, once they understood it with the Beastie Boys, they wanted more from anybody. I knew a couple of guys in high school who were just into heavy metal only and used to fuck with me for listening to rap. I got lucky and got a copy of License to Ill the day before it's supposed to come out. I think a lot of it stems from the "cleanness" of the sound of a lot of white rappers. While Macklemore and iggy get accused of cultural appropriation (deservedly, in many cases), it's hard to find anyone who who acuse Atmosphere or El-P of the same thing. White rappers like these carve out their own sound in the genre, and may or may not be commercially successful for it, but due to the individual character of their sound they can't be accused of appropriation in the same way. This is almost mandatory for white rappers, since rap started as a literal voice for economically disadvantaged black and urban youth. Rap has largely expanded to be inclusive of everyone, but it's in poor taste to take the sound of others and "whitewash" it down.
@@jalennelson6821 the mere concept of appropriation is nonsense, since the beginning of time cultures have learned from each other and adapted forms and norms that benefited them, even suggesting that cultural appropriation is somehow wrong, makes me think that even though humans are the smartest living being on earth we are still way too stupid. the only way cultural appropriation would be wrong is when it would only be used to be malicious mocking, but then again it wouldnt be an appropriation anymore.. so there you go.

Without commercialization to the “white” audience, hip hop would not exist today. No record company can survive on an audience that is a fraction of less than 10% of the population. If Run DMC did not do that collaboration with Aerosmith on an old ass song of theirs, which run dmc wasn’t even listening to, hip hop might not have lasted as long as grunge music or disco. I don’t see these hip hop artists telling white people to stop buying and streaming their music because it is not for them. Unfortunately, I've seen this kind of stuff fairly often over the years, always made me hesitant to try to write any rap lyrics when I was younger, up until the past year when I had some serious shit to work out in my head, because I never saw a realistic possibility of being accepted by a large portion of people, I didn't see a point, now that I turned to writing lyrics as an outlet for myself, I feel it is indeed *in* me. I've grown and become more comfortable with myself, so fuck it I'ma see how good I get and see where it takes me. Man this is tough to watch, this guy is actually asking for less understanding with each other, draw a line and see this is ours, this ain't yours, is asking for MORE LINES TO BE DRAWN by both sides, which just ends in more division and hatred, draw a line in the sand I draw one too, you draw another, I draw another, by the time it's done we're at each throats about the fucking lines themselves, MORE DIVISION IS NOT A GOOD THING!!!!!!!! Like you were kind of saying imitation is the highest form of flattery, if people want to be a part of it, that's something in itself...to push people away is to do it out of some degree of spite, there's so many people like me that never played a part in that history, that grew up on the culture like MC Serch, we're all ignorant (every single one of us, yes including me) but there's plenty of us trying to learn and understand and not ignore it anymore, we've all been lied to from birth, taught so much bullshit, indoctrinated to a very high degree, it's not something to easily break away from. If equality is the goal, how else can we hope to do it except through trying to understand one another? Not all families teach these things in the home (hell some of them reinforce the racism and ignorance, whether directly or indirectly), so a lot of us don't learn until we do our own research, something has to spark that interest, like someone to understand that we are all ignorant and explain to us at least a little (like you Stevie), I had a few people in my life that taught me to question things more and think for myself...so I feel I learned some, not all, but I learned some, and I keep trying to learn more, but to automatically close off any semblance of understanding because of someone's skin color...is racist, doesn't matter what color it is directed at. Awesome video man, really love your takes
"The first thing we need to get people to respect us is to see that they aren't us," correct me if I'm wrong, but the key to gaining someone's respect/acceptance is by pointing out similarities not differences? The key to ending racism is showing racist people that individuals of a different race are still people. That is sameness not difference.
Yea, pointing out differences like that only creates division and encourages the ”Us vs them” thing. It’s really harmful. We should be looking for unity and trying to come together as one
Just wanna let you know Ive learnedly so much about rap, hip hop and the whole scene. Always listened to a few artists here and there but never gave it alot a of thought. Found a whole new appreciation for it from these break down videos. Just wanted to say thanks.
Mouse’s entire argument, no matter what anyone says to him, is “I’m black you can’t tell me shit about Hip Hop”. I get it, it’s a black culture but this dude Mouse can not understand anyone’s point because of the hate in his heart to anyone outside of what he sees Hip Hop as. Everyone can have their opinion but listening to him talk sometimes makes my blood boil.
I think it makes more sense when you understand that they are thinking a lot further back. When you include the BLACK history? No one can backtalk. (Sadly)
and since when just being black makes you Hip Hop ??? Hip Hop is how you live, how you translate the world, how you stand and breathe. It's Peace Love Unity Fun Truth Respect Knowledge. And as far as I'm concerned none of the above is the case with guys like that.
I have the same feeling about that Mouse person like I have on Benzino. These last couple weeks I seen Benzino hostile like demanding respect but at the same time dissrespecting everybody who doesn't got the same taste as him
How do people not understand they are arguing in favor of segregation? In a nutshell, the argument is essentially "We want equality, but have our own space."
@@Helluvabutl3r That's not what he's saying smh, people back then literally cried for help back in the days bc of the opression, this mouse guy is just being racist to be racist.
@@wedontagelikemilktho.6633 nah bro I know, I’m just stating a fact that mouse is a racist. Lol it’s sad that that’s how it is still in this day and age. Think i meant to reply to the OP. But yeah, separate but equal was what they said back then, and we all know that isn’t equal. My point is that oppression doesn’t end by becoming the oppressors. We all gotta shut that shit down when we see it, and I see that as a responsibility we hold to generations of the future. It’s really disheartening that no one, except for the guy they kicked out stood up against it
I'll amend a quote I saw from @WisdoMango. "Hating people because of things they cannot change is wrong. And it doesn't matter who or what you are doing the hating. Its just plain wrong." M. Ali - Fixed by Xen.
That is because the same system that had him killed, along with Malcolm X, JFK, RFK, etc, are keeping the Black people down by brainwashing them to keep them segregated.
@@grjmassacre4886 How am I dense? We don't have special channels , months, stores, clothing or music for Asians, Arabs, Native Americans etc like we do for Black people. You don't see the Hispanics or Chinese going out there and causing riots and shit.
Nothing like being racist and grouping an entire race of people together as one. He’s a damn racist fool. Imagine someone on a show saying “all black people this and all black people that.”
The divide is getting stronger. If you are a part of that culture you should know where it comes from. And If you are also apart of “American” culture you should know where it comes from, ppl r forgetting our past mistakes and they r happening all over again my g 🤦🏾♂️. We’ve been through all this before.
@@esayascohn7019 honestly I don’t it’s actually causing more divide it just that a platform gives the illusion of a mass understanding. I believe this shit is mostly in a minority the youth I believe actually engage inter racially more than any other generation.
My respect for Stevie after this video went through the roof. " Hip Hop has no race anymore, as long as people can acknowledge where it come from. It doesn't matter". Thanks for saying that man, cause rap - specifically Eminem songs and a certain B.O.B song has helped me through some tough times and I stand up for this culture. I'm from India, I learned about the history of hip hop eventually because I was first introduced to rap through Eminem, (same is the case for a Majority of other people who were introduced to rap in this side of the world) and I mean no disrespect to black culture or their relevance in hip hop by that; but for that very reason, when I hear Eminem doesn't belong in the culture, it sounds very disrespectful. Stevie thanks for being so open and courageous with your views, it's not often one feels welcome and you have made me feel welcome. So thank you again.
Doesnt he get, hip hop is a melting pot, asian, black, brown, white, and every single color inbetween, its open for anyone with the level of talent to bring it...
And he never made a legit contribution to the culture and is questioning the validity of proven pioneers, anyone who falls for this is bottom of the barrel when it comes to intellect
Haven't heard anything so divided ever. Appreciation of hip hop is appreciation of hip hop. Color , gender, political views, life experience is irrelevant. From what I appreciate from hip hop is utilizing an art form to express your life, struggles and bring attention to real topics that affect every day life. Only a true hip hop artist does that with poetry which who most people put up as the greats. Jay , em , biggie, pac , nwa etc
1a: metrical writing : VERSE b: the productions of a poet : POEMS 2: writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm 3a: something likened to poetry especially in beauty of expression b: poetic quality or aspect the poetry of dance
That's webster's definition of poetry....now subjectively jay, em, biggie and nwa may not be your style of poetry which is understood however....poetry
Nas is a poet tho Freedom or jail, clip's inserted, a baby's being born Same time a man is murdered, the beginning and end As far as rap go, it's only natural I explain My plateau, and also, what defines my name -Nas
You are the best “reactioner” on RU-vid. You’re so damn intelligent and honest. I love how willing you are to see the world on a grander scale. I’ve been watching your stinkin Eminem reactions all weekend…got down a rabbit 🐇 hole
