@David Staugis Agreed 100% for sures. Hey never lost that comedy part of him why cuz rappers don’t have to so tense and crazy on the mic step out your comfort zone and try a lil skit or sumthin to show y’all are humble.hungry but be able to separate yourself from other the new herd of young rappers. It could be tuff cuz so many sensitive snowflakes ❄️ out there. 💯💯🤙🏼🤜🏼🤛🏽
Well yeah after so many years uncontested as king of the hill, I'd feel invincible to being dethroned as well haha but when he said this he probably ment it 💯
In Em's defense, at the time there were A LOT of MC's that were good. Em can make the "I'm the greatest" claim now because all the "Lil'" punks of the last few years don't have the lyrical skill to compete with anyone competent at rapping, much less the GOAT Eminem.
I've been a fan of Eminem since 1999. His Shady side made his craft entertaining, his Marshall side brought it to real. Thank you Dre for showing the world Em.
To answer Stevie's question of "Why respond to him at all?", because Benzino was in an undeserving position of power, which he used repeatedly to ruin careers of rappers and degrading The Source. And cause his clown ass jumped with Ja Rule on the whole "Go after Em's daughters" shit
It’s crazy how much power the source had back then. You had to go to the record shop to listen to stuff, hours with the headphones on in Virgin records. The Source really effected sales and Benzino believed all the hype.
Him being white made it almost impossible for him to break out. Until he met DRE and then him being white actually gave him a boost in the mainstream... Double edged sword
@@Seek_Solitude exactly, that was what I was trying to say to some stans and they got pissed because they thought that I was saying eminem sold so much cause he white 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Yes and Tyler says he picks the worst beats I’m not a Stan but I feel people takes shots at him out of trend or to pretend they are tough. It’s become a trend to say shits about him with no reason just to seem like they are tough guys from the hood. Ridiculous
@@raynast84 yea that hes a bad producer is something that people say because they feel it’s trendy and because that’s sort of a common non sense that people spread. He actually produced most of his early hits with resto and the bass brothers (as much as with dre actually). People should actually listen to music and dig deeper if they are actual music lovers. If not they should not give their opinions.
I’m 43. I was 100% reading The Source until this beef happened. Then it was “XXL” after that. Then they fell off too. I haven’t read a magazine in over a decade. I don’t even think there’s magazines in the USA anymore.
@@Riley_187 "That's my contribution to hip hop" - Em literally out here putting money in people's pockets, food on their plates, enabling their dreams, *and* the dude's got charities handled. Anyone hating on this dude is literally detrimental to hip hop.
As an old Eminem fan I can say I DEFINITELY read The Source religiously (since '94). So did every other hip hop head. People really underestimate the incredible influence The Source (and magazines in general) had back then. It's one of the reasons why I respect Eminem so much - Benzino & co were fucking up this hip hop institute for personal gain and people slowly started to see this. At first people didn't even want to believe that was happening because no one could imagine anyone wanting to even try to put such a revered place in trouble, their reputation was pretty much flawless. They told you where to go, who to listen to and they were REAL about it. Everybody respected The Source enormously. It's why no one even dared to say a thing about what was happening in front of our eyes. So the amount of balls it took for Eminem to stand up to this...The Source could potentially destroy any rap career back in the day. Now I don't think they would've been able to with Eminem and also things were already falling apart (for many reasons) but it was still a boss move by Eminem if I've ever seen one. And the moment I personally realized that anyone who would ever beef with Eminem ever again would be a fucking fool, lol.
@@TheNewPatsyBailey yup I’m with u. Was listening to my idols ice cube meth. Dre. Nwa. Public Enemy. Wu tang and Em came. Blew the whole world up. Peace to the Legendary Em. The goat. U all remember before u comment a lot of black peoples rock wit Slim Shady not jus Stan’s and wasn’t put on by Eminem. People think all Eminem fans started with him that’s so not true.
The Source, on their WORD I bought anything that was 4 mics or better...until....UNTIL they gave that BULLSHIT Made Men album (Benzino and his crew 4 1/2 mics....that shit was garbage. That ruined The Source for me. That was my red pill moment, if you will, on the corruption of the Source
"When the Source was like the only source of light".... them mic ratings held weight in the industry back in the day benzino a real bum for ruining it.. Stevie you the man keep it up
I found your channel a week or so ago...and you are, hands down, my favorite reactor! This dude is the real deal! From bar breakdowns, to just keeping it real...love your content!
I don't think he was necessarily wrong though. He was saying that he thinks a majority of Em fans probably weren't looking at Source, which is likely an accurate statement.
I remember reading about this back in the early 2000’s and assuming Em was just a clown and wouldn’t be able to hang. But I had only heard the radio hits. Silly me didn’t catch on to what Eminem actually was doing until I heard Till I Collapse. That’s when I went back and listened to Slim Shady and got him as an artist. ✌🏽
I actually couldn't stand anything about Eminem until MTBMB came out and I started listening and it made me go back and listen to his previous stuff and I gained a respect for him. Perception is a high wall.
@@TwistedSisler oh wow that late! Ok yeah I've been a big fan for 6 months since last year. before I was just casual listener but going through his catalog I realised A good chunk of his old songs I've heard as a kid I just didn't know it was him all along! Especially cleaning out my closet.. The hook made my eyes go big like I found the answer to immortality
@@TwistedSisler I did the exact same thing with Wayne, damn near my entire life I hated his music until accidentally stumbled across a track he did with Drake on his mixtape back in December and it opened my eyes. All I heard before then was his radio hits which I never liked and now I got him in my playlist. I try my best not to sleep on rappers these days because if you take the time to dive through their discography im sure you'll find something you enjoy.
Yea same over here. I thought he was some fake marketed rebel with only shock value & corny tracks until I actually listen to white America and till I collapse. Glad I did, it’s fire I was like the guy has got some tough shits to say
@@2bsarah I still come across some I’ve never heard like Stimulate and wonder how people don’t get it. I’d like to see what Stevie thinks about that one because for some reason it hasn’t been reacted to by very many people.
Remember the Source gave LL Cool J 2 mics for BAD witch was clearly a Banger everyone thought that was going to finally be a 5 mic but he got 2 remember people were trippin
Have you ever seen the movie called The Interview? It has James Franco and Seth Rogen. Towards the beginning of the movie Em has a cameo where he has a hilarious interview with James Franco’s character.
Wait there's a documentary on tht! I watched the defiant ones the other day abt dre n Jimmy. Super dope. As a rock n now hip hop fan that was really good one.
Benzino once got mad at the editors of the source because on the cover they had the big artists name big but they had his group ‘Made Men’ small and in the corner. He wanted their name bigger than the others.
I grew up in the 90s. Yes we that magazine was like the bible of hip hop. I used to read all their articles on Marshall 's albums. And i never saw him with a 5 mic rating even tho his albums we fire.
I read The Source pre Eminem, and i still have the one with him on the front cover with the chainsaw. Even here in Australia The Source was huge for hip hop. I was lucky cos my bro worked for a leading magazine distributor and would get it air freight every month. I used to cut it up and decorate my folder for school with all my fav hip hop artits....im so old
I started reading the source in 93. My dad used to take me to blockbuster and they had a CD rack, and a magazine rack including the source. I started TRULY listening to rap at 8, which was 91. My first two tapes were Aerosmith, and Snoop "Murder was the Case." So, myself, was reading the source before Em.
Stevie Knight you're right for the most part comes to if Eminem fans were or were not following the Source magazine, are purchasing The Source magazine or are subscribed to. Now like you were referring to the Eminem fans that were the top 40 chart Eminem fans no those guys those people weren't for the most part purchasing The Source magazine. Now I'm a 38 year old Caucasian male never considered myself a Stan but I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Eminem and what he's done for the culture and he is definitely in the goat conversation but it's hard to specify the goat because there's so many different forms of Hip Hop lyricism, storytelling, speed rap....ect but as far as me being from Flint Michigan which is right down the road from Detroit and being a hip-hop head I mean I am hip hop I am the culture i respect the Legends the DJ Kool herc the KRS 1 the Big Daddy Kane's the Tupac's the naz's excetera excetera, so yeah when I was 13 years old 14 years old I was getting The Source before Eminem even come out as too the discrepancies from the point once Benzino started taking control of the mic system instead of realizing if you don't mess with me I'm not going to give you a decent Mike review whether you were dope or not. Now I think the reason that Benzino whent at Eminem was because of that reason that what he's white he most likely has no Street Credibility so if I go at him I don't have to deal with any repercussions as to where if you was to say something about a black artist even if he didn't know a thing about him he knows well this dude probably has some sort of ties like a homeboy or a cousin or somebody who's on a street level and I ain't trying to get into that because Benzino the clown, a fake or phony and extorter of the culture that he claims to love and Be, and represent. That's all my hiphopheads out there y'all should know back in 1973 it popped off and that's when DJ Kool herc started it all but in 75 when Afrika Bambaataa started laying the groundwork and bylaws and rules to what hip hop was going to be as a culture Afrika Bambaataa said no matter what race Nation or Creed as long as you respect the culture you are allowed in hip hop so we need to stop with it black / White issue as a whole is a nation or as a culture and remember that hip-hop is not about black and white it's about wrong and right and it's about respecting the elders in the ones who paved the way to help others eat off that art and all these guys are claimed to be all about hip hop and providing amplification for the culture never pay homage to those who paved the way you never see any of them doing that Eminem's constantly give a shout outs to the legends so anyway Stevie night mad salute to you and what you do brother your channel is growing so much and it is so well deserved cuz you keep it a buck and admit that you used to discriminate against Eminem based on certain criteria in you know you open your eyes and realized hey just dudes actually dope so shoutout Steven Knight shout out tonight Nation y'all remember....LMF....... loyalty makes you family blood only makes you related
Gawd damn right ! His attitude is so motivational to me in all sorts of ways. You know how depending on your mood the same song can take on a completely different meaning... Weather im happy or mad i can i can be listening to a em beat and be affected by another one at the same time just from knowing his history and my shit disappears.. At the same time knowing im trash no matter my color or anyone elses if im slackin i feel like i got to get my own ass up.. Find a way..end of the day its just me " lego
Stevie bringing the heat as always. Keep doing u sir. Love your reactions. Just here to drop my weekly Mac Miller request. Macadelic mixtape would be a good place to start with Mac Miller.
The Source wasn't regional, if you were around in the early 90s til around 2005, the Source Magazine was like the Bible of Hip Hop. Literally everything they said was gold. Doesn't matter if you was from NY, LA, St. Louis or Texas
Nope. LA here and we copped the Source everytime it dropped. We used to first go to the album ratings and see who got rated what and cop. We didn't wanna sleep on a 4+ mic rated album.
The thing started with mmlp got 4 mics on the source.. And at that time anyone could get that rating.. Then TES came out and he got huge positive ratings from everywhere even rock stations were playing him.. Then source gives again 4mics.. Now he took it as an insult.. Then he went on TV and said that he will never get a 5 rating from source bcuz they don't understand greatness and he didn't care abt whatever agenda they had against him. Em also went to Puerto Rico to promote and benzino wanted to meet him in person but em declined and somewhere after that he called benzino a "has been".. That pissed Ben out and he made that diss track against him " Pull up your skirt " N shit went on from there
At the time, The Source was the "go to" reference for literally ALL things related to Rap. NY to LA, people would go out of their way to get a current copy just to keep up to date on who was in the studio, who had the best selling LP or Single, who was on tour and with who they were touring with, as well as get more information on the "upcoming" artists. The Source was the 'street map of success' for a lot of rappers looking to get into the industry as well. Then Benzino got it into his head to team up with Ja Rule to go after 50, Em, D12, and almost ANYONE associated with Aftermath and Shady Records. To the point that Benzino was working behind the scenes to get Russel Simmons and Def Jam to basically boycott ANY collabs or future projects with anyone doing a single verse with anyone from Aftermath. That is Benzino trying to get Russell Simmons and Def Jam artists to NOT work with ANYONE connected in any way to Aftermath, including Dr. Dre, Snoop, Xzibit and others at the time. In today's world, that would be like 1 man at Disney trying to get WB and Sony to NEVER do another film with Chris Evans because he played Capt America in a couple of movies.
Stevie, idk how old you are personally, but I was in High School when this beef took place. The Source was that magazine back in the day. Eminem isn't kidding when he says that the mic ratings was a make or break system for albums. If someone was a 3, they were suspect. Most people, who followed hip hop closely and wanted the best lyricists possible, they only got the 4's and 5's. But Benzino muddied the waters terribly. He started 1 and 2 mic'ing Eminem and anyone associated with him. They also did "quotables" and somehow only Benzino and Ja Rule affiliates only seemed to be quoted for a long time. The credibility of the magazine was shot with that. I don't know if the Source has ever truly recovered, but most people flipped to XXL. But both magazines had serious biases during those beefs. XXL took advantage of it and featured Eminem and Co. heavily during the beefs.
Absolutely!! Couldn’t have said it better. People will dislike just to dislike. Like the puppy example you gave. I swear you’re channel be one of the most intelligent Ones out there that I have come across. Love the content!
I don't usually comment on your videos but Stevie I got to on this one, I got to tell you man I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this! I grew up listening to Eminem I'm around his age and it's nice having you do this reaction because you are also not a kid and I appreciate that in your reaction good job buddy this is a great one great video and Eminem is a goat. Bennnnher, is the toilet paper that wipes your butt🤣💪👍💯
i didnt mess with the magazine, but the source hip hop award albums were my shit. 1999 had "my name is", 2000 had "forgot about dre" 😂 so they were still using em to sell shit while not giving him his props
