Should You Be Interlocking Your Locs? | Pro-tips from Loctician

So many clients ask me about interlocking in our consultations and many of them want to try it for all of the wrong reasons. There is so much conflicting information on here about interlocking that I wanted to settle it once and for all. Interlocking is not for everyone! The main types of locs that use interlocking are microlocs and sisterlocs.

About me: I'm a natural hair stylist during the day and CEO of a natural hair care company called Froetry. I have worn my 4c hair short for years as I love how it brings out my facial features. In September of 2020, I started a set of locs that eventually I had to comb out because of an allergic reaction (the story is on my channel). So I’m back to my short cut but I am STILL bringing you all of the loc care tops you deserve (with a sprinkle of other types of content as well) ☺️
What questions do you have about locs and the process of starting them?! As a loctician and natural hair stylist, I’d love to share more insight and tips that I give my clients. Drop your questions below!

Highly informative video. Thank you! I've been locked for 12 years and have always palm rolled. Recently, I went to a new stylist, and I am convinced that she interlocked my hair. While she was doing my hair, I was not facing a mirror, but felt a consistent pull while she was doing each lock. I didn't think anything of it; I just assumed she was heavy-handed. I didn't consider that she had interlocked it until weeks later when I noticed how well my hair was lasting. When I washed it about a month later, I noticed that it was still "very tight" post shampoo, which is very unusual for my fuzzy hair. If she did interlock it, I'm grateful, because I find it much easier to manage and it's less fuzzy than usual. I just think it's strange that she would interlock it without asking me, lol.

This video was SPOT ON! I started my locs 6 months ago with two strand twists and have been maintaining them using the interlock method. I recently noticed a lot of short hairs around my locs and decided to visit to a new locitian who confirmed my fears--I had breakage!!! This new loctician told me that I was getting my hair interlocked too often (the previous locitian advised me to come in every 4-5 weeks since my hair was in the starter loc phase). She (the new loctician) explained that I could get my hair palm rolled to allow the broken hairs to grow in and that I could switch between the two methods , very similar to what you explained in the video. Needless to say I’m very happy I followed my instinct and went to a new loctician. Now that I have experience with both methods, I’ve decided that I will stick to palm rolling moving forward. I’ve noticed that interlocked locs are very much compact and on the thinner side, I prefer the more cylinder, thicker look of palm rolled locs. It’s all a learning experience but advise to anyone on the loc journey to (1) ask questions, (2) do your research & (3) pay attention to your hair! Luckily for me I noticed the breakage from early on and made the necessary adjustments. Thank you for sharing this knowledge as well! I just subscribed 😊

Which I didn't know anything about locs and still don't know. And I have never put any type of oil or moisturizer on it until about 3 weeks ago and I only moisturize it every Monday now. I had the 2 string twist and converted them into locs. And I think that was in 2021. But I am glad that I did and love it.

Thanks for this video. I started my locs in Dec 2021 with two-strand twists. My original loctician took a break so i had to go somewhere else. After a little research i decided to interlock on my second retwist and initially loved it cause I could wash and didn't have to worry about doing anything extra. I went back to my original location for a retwist and she said the interlocking caused my hair to grow tangled and there were some spots where my hair broke off. Also, many stands of hair were just loose and not attracted to anything. She palm rolled to not cause further damage and said it woukd also keep my grays somewhat growing with the loc. I like the ease of care with interlocking. I was very frustrated after my hair appointment cause I hate retwisting myself after every other wash. I may alternate or just interlock 1-2 times a year. I really appreciate the guidance.

i started my locs freeform and after 4 years got maintained by a friend who did interlocking. i always disliked the way my hair and scalp looked after maintenance, and did not like the tightness of the locs after she worked on them. because my dreads were completely freeform for many years I was ignorant to the various methods available and wish I had never had them interlocked. I am currently looking for a new loctician so I can try to move on from what had already occurred with my hair. thank you for your unbiased description of how and why we use the different techniques.

Thanks for this video and it’s content! Wish I had known this info before I started interlocking my 10 years locs about 4 years ago. I loved the convenience of it raising 4 kids and getting lazy with my own hair while keeping theirs healthy but never made the connection with the thinning from the root and loc. This was my second set of locs ( the first set were thick for 20 years which I maintained on my own by palm rolling) I know age may contribute some but not to this extent. I’m free styling now and serious about my moisturizing like I used to be hoping to get my thickness back. If no recovery in a year I will cut my below waist locs off Continued blessings 🌸

Fatima Manneh I am glad to hear that 3 years in you are still hydrating your scalp and locs and oiling your scalp throughout the week. I’m only 3 months in and that is my routine too. It seems some YT channels have a problem with this type of routine and they caution about using too much water and too much oil. I think this journey is a matter of finding what works for your hair and doing that. I’m a newbie and have had no issues with lint or product buildup or breakage. Courtney has been a source of good information for me. I’m loving the freedom locs give me and interlocking is part of that freedom for me. I have tried re twisting but even tied under a scarf and bonnet my retwists came undone. I think it’s too much tension to keep re twisting the same loc week after week so I interlock.

Several months ago I began twisting, i.e., palm rolling in the new growth that grows outside the loc, the sew in that part of the loc. As the new growth locs in, the thread can later be removed. I use to have my hair interlocked, but as you said, those locs are slimmer. Therefore, I stopped interlocking.

Hey Courtney, lovely to see you looking so well🙏🏽Because of you, I now have the tools to keep my baby locs conditioned between my 4 week trips to my loctition. Just had my first retwist and was a little disappointed to see, how rough it was looking, a few days later. My Loctition, didn’t really speak to me, apart from telling me, not to get it wet n to oil my scalp regularly with carrot oil. I’ve since followed some of your advice(I can’t find your brand in my country, the UK) but have blended my own concoction using , sweet almond, tee tree & peppermint oils. Thank you so much for sharing. I also got the rose water to hydrate my scalp. Once again. Thank you for the video, I’ve never heard of interlocking…it seems I’ve still got a lot to learn. I love it that you explain a lot, personally I appreciate that. Keep these videos coming pl, we need you. ONE LOVE🙏🏽

As a Muslim we have to wash our hair quite a lot so after I did coils as stater they was not staying … but I used the needle to mesh the ends then interlocked and now it’s perfect and I do it like every 6 weeks plus

Not only that but it’s if you have a dry scalp or oily. Just like our skin and washing it a lot has a lot to do with drying out the hair faster, it strips away your natural oils.

Hi Courtney, Love your channel. I researched locking methods and watched Loc journeys for years before finally starting mine on July 30 of this year. I am oiling my scalp 2X a week (Wild Growth Oil) and spritzing it daily with a mixture of Rose Water, Vitamin E Oil and a few drops of Peppermint Oil. I wash it once a month, I just washed it Saturday and I am having it retightened every 3 months. No styles and I sleep in a Satin Bonnet. I would love your opinion regarding whether or not I am doing anything wrong. Thank you

I've just found your channel and I'm hooked. I really enjoy the way you inform without patronising. Very informative and knowledgeable. Did you buzz cut your own hair as I've been thinking about this for a long time. I'm even thinking of having locs at a later date. Please could you do a video on diy buzz cuts? Thank you 😊

Hey I have 48 locs and I’m 6 months into my journey. I started with that number because I wanted thicker locs, but I also go to the gym at lot, should I try interlocking on rotation with palm rolling? Because I can see the benefits and my retwists don’t last too long

I tried interlocking early in my journey maybe twice then decided to just not retwist at all. 5 years later, those spots where i interlocked started to thin above the interlocked area. I just decided to cut it off. Interlocking is definitely not for everyone.

Thank you! This was a GREAT video! PLEASE! I would really appreciate some help! I have always done my own hair; my texture is 3C-4A. I never had issues. I had my hair interlocked by suggestion from a stylist, not really knowing what it was. I thought it was crocheting with additional hair to beef up my thinner locs. As a result, my hair improperly interlocked about 4 weeks ago. I am used to only palm rolling and free forming. I hate interlocking and want to NEVER do this again.
@CourtneyGrayton
@CourtneyGrayton Год назад
Sorry that happened to you. Just allow about 6-8 weeks after interlocking and switch over to palm roll again!

If I had seen this video before then I would definitely do the palmroll, but I will not try it again. I thought I have very strong 4c hair and just lookin at it looks that way... but my hair is very fragile and every protective styles damage my hair.

Would it be bad to get interlocking done on my first retwist? I have a retwist planned 2 weeks from now for my first time so I have my starter locs for 2 weeks now. My stylist can do it professionally but idk if this is a good thing to do for new starter locs. I do workout 6-7 times a week with track and I do jump into sand pits so washing my hair I do value more than most people especially with how much I sweat so I was thinking about getting this done
