Should you brace your abs in posture?

It is commonly claimed that one should "engage the core" implying clenching the abs in posture. But is this true?
Clenching the abs will rigidify the trunk and prevent proper breathing. It will also flex the trunk, causing hyperextension of the hip joint, stretching and weakening the hip flexors, as well as lumbosacral flexion with subsequent malcompressive [anterior] disc shearing. Not a great strategy.
As I have said many times, we need to maintain proper extension in the lumbosacral spine in posture, without clenching the abs! But, in this regard, many patients dread having to let the "womb" hang out. It is therefore important to understand that we need to learn how to engage the transversus abdominus in posture rather than bracing the obliques and/or rectus abdominus. This can be accomplished by gently "sucking" the lower abdomen in, ensuring that the abdominal wall is not rigid upon palpation. If it is rigid, then the patient is still using the RA or obliques. Using the transverse abdominus in posture is also important when treating abdominal hernias.
This way, we will be able to maintain proper abdominal stability without compromising breathing or pelvic positioning.

Yes! I've always thought this, but didn't know the detailed anatomy explanation. Love these videos! Keep them coming! So far you disagree with two of the same "common knowledge" things that I do (this and chin tucks). Thank you!

Story of my life here - bracing abdomen. For decades. Working on this I can’t breathe!, because I never breathed correctly. Actually hurts to breathe normal.

Wow what a revelation. How come no-one ever talks about engaging the low back?

I was just thinking about this! Great video. What about when walking briskly and jogging? I feel like the faster you move, the more you need to engage rectus abdominis and the obliques.

Shouldn't be clenched. But yes, more active.

activating the upper abs slightly will put pressure off the hip flexors, in fact I use this to release my already tight hip flexors

I agree generally that its bad habit for scapula to ever not track the humerus, but on the point of crushing the brachial plexus, I think there is a need to develop strength in that position. People who are vulnerable to falling will be well-served knowing how to roll, including potentially over the shoulder and going into that position without training it could be catastrophic...

Do you consider the vacuum exercise a safe way to train the transverse abdominis, assuming its performed with proper pelvic alignment etc?

Sure
