So Should you Buy a Mazda CX-9 in 2022\2023 models? I test drove this Mazda model for a week to find out what's good and what's not good about it.
We'll start with a technical review of the Mazda CX9 then we'll take a look underneath it.
Then we'll talk about the inside and outside to see what makes it good and what doesn't work well.
Then I'll share with you my thoughts on the things I like and things that I don't like about it as a family SUV.

The NON touch screen is actually a PRO.. I have a CX9 '22 and I can sit back in my seat while driving and have my arm/elbow on the arm rest controlling my entertainment...I DO NOT have to lean forward from my comfortable position and "touch" a screen

I own a 2022 cx9. The comfort is amazing. The engine is very adequate and smooth. It's easier to park than an Explorer I traded in to get the Mazda. The steering is crisp and you don't feel like it's a big luggy vehicle. I disagree with your dislikes of the cx9 but you're entitled to your opinion. I have the Touring model with the premium package and I'm extremely happy with it.

I absolutely love my 2022 CX9 touring plus. I have had Toyota’s for years and bought a CX5 first then I got the larger CX 9 . Hands-down the Mazda is a star, there is hardly any road noise at all in the Mazda compared to the Toyota. The Toyota was one of the worst with road noise. I love the driving dynamics of the Mazda, CX9 compared to the Toyota. Mazda was not even on my radar when I was looking for another vehicle then my best friend said, do you need to drive the Mazda I did, and all I can say is wow I am so impressed with this vehicle will definitely be buying another Mazda in the future.

I just sold my 2015 cx-9, V6 engine, 87,000, mi, and bought a used 2022 cx-9, turbo 4 cyl with 18,000 mi. I was a bit apprehensive about being a 4 cyl at first but the turbo has faster acceleration and a feeling of power as good or better than my V-6, so I disagree with the comments about needing a V-6, the one I bought has more than enough. Everything about being smooth and quiet is right on. A few things like warning steering wheel vibrations when you get too close to the road edge etc. will take getting used to. As well as all the controls.

Mine: 2012 cx9 GT loaded. Now 176k.miles, aiming for 200k. lots of problems with power this and that. Gets 12 mpg and I am not heavy foot Very rough ride, but quiet inside. Plenty of engine power still. Navi CD can't update anymore. Power window, roof and seat switch inop. I may go for a 2020 cX 9 model.

I own a 2023 CX-9, traded my RDX and could not be happier. I enjoy your reviews, find them be thorough, entertaining, and informative. However I take some exception with some of your criticisms as to it's size and powertrain. I know you started your videos almost exclusively as a Toyota guy and the Highlander is probably their most comparable model. The CX-9 is about 4 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the Highlander which is marketed as a mid size SUV. I have no problem in parking lots, it's easy to maneuver. Powertrain in the 2023 Highlander is a 2.4 L Turbo, same with the Lexus RX350. The Highlander has more HP 265 vs 220 (250 w/ Premium) but the Mazda has more torque. HP peaks at high RPM, torque is what makes a nice driving experience. Also 0-60 times the CX-9 is faster at 7.1 seconds vs the new Highlander at 8.0. I don't think it's fair to call the CX-9 underpowered. Pricing also favors the CX-9, compare apples to apples and the CX-9 is $4000 or more less expensive. I enjoy your reviews but think you may have been a little unfair with the Mazda.

The rear centre console is fine if you have teens/adult children or you use this as a work car for carrying around clients, doing airport runs etc. For the little tackers, as you say there is a full bench seat in the lower trim models and lets face it, that is the car you would buy for a family. The less well equipped models are also more durable for family use as they don't have the fancy trim etc, but offer the exact same practicality and performance at a lower purchase price. In some markets like in Japan, New Zealand and Australia, you also have the CX-8 which still gives you the same length and six seats, but is a narrower car, so easier to park.

The lower models have the 2nd row bench. Mazda use to have a V6 which delivered 273 hp but it was a gas guzzler. I find the 4 cyl. turbo adequate for carrying passengers but not for hauling. I have gotten amazing highway mpg numbers in the high 20s. I love this vehicle It handles better than all other suvs that I have driven (Honda ,toyata, kia). It simply is a good reliable vehicle that does the job for a reasonable priice.

This actually works well for us as 70 year old empty nesters. Enough room for transporting adults when we go out to dinner or a show which we do every week. And enough room for four adults to travel 300 to 600 miles on short vacations with luggage. I'd like a bigger engine or a hybrid option, but Mazda has been dragging its feet in that department.

On ours the infotainment screen is touch when the car is stopped. But agree the screen definitely is outdated. The engine never feels underpowered, but you definitely hear it when accelerating. It did not have the center console in the middle row, however, it was the Grand Touring if I remember correctly. It performed fine in the snow. The engine was not loud. I am in Australia 🇦🇺 & bought my 2022 CX9GT delivered in September. I paid nearly $68K for mine but Australian $1 is only about 68 cents US. I have done a couple of road trips & find my car quiet & very comfortable & extremely well finished. My other vehicle is a Holden Statesman which is a 5.7 LS1 Land yacht so the size of the CX9GT does not intimidate me or my girl. The GT has the 2nd row bench seat which is far more practical. The handling is great with a sporty feel to it & with the floppy paddle shifting isn't a bad drive. Overall I love my Mazda but agree the seats are comfortable but narrower than my Statesman & touch screen infortainment would be easier to use !

I just took my new to me 1 owner 50k mile ‘21 grand touring on its first road trip and I’m really happy with it. The torque gets this puppy moving quickly and is great for those sketchy passes on a two lane road. I actually adore the engine noises and torque steer. Really complements the handling when you’re getting after it. The tech is great inside and out and it’s very comfortable even for me being a husky dude and 6’2”. My only gripes are that the fog lights are not really useful at the stock aiming and some of the panel gaps are weird up by the A pillar and of course the limited trunk space with the third row up.

I own a 2020 cx-9 Grand Touring and gotta say that I love it. I never had in mind to race against a Corvette or a Cayenne when i purchased it, so to me the 4 cylinder engine that it has is way more than enough to have a nice drive from point a to point b. I try to understand your points but keep in mind that the concept of a "family" is not all the time parents with little kids. I am in my late 40's and even though we don't have small kids anymore the SUV has been excellent when some adult friends ride with us in our CX-9 so they wont be playing with the center console doors as you are pointing as a deal braker.

I will say though that I am sensitive to noises and creeks and I notice that there is a whirling sound coming from the front end while driving more that 20 miles an hour. What is interesting is that I noticed the same sound when I drove a courtesy Mazda cx 30. It must be a characteristic of the whole line?? So first thing, I love your calming demeanor in your reviews. I think you are one of the best in the business, you need a tic tok account! Nobody is crawling under cars, and giving thorough reviews like you. In regards to this CX9, I think this is an excellent bang for the buck, especially in the used market. Nobody is buying this and putting anything but small kids in that 3rd row. The interior of this car is a nice place to be, yes it would be nice to have a V6 like the Telluride, but then you sacrifice mpg. Compare this to the Telluride, and it comes up a little short. But I feel that all your grips about the CX9 will change with the arrival of the new CX-90! But, I'm sure cost will be an issue, probably around mid $50K's. Keep up the good work.

Overall, I still give it an A for quality and reliability. 50k miles in 2.5 years and absolutely not a single mechanical concern. I'm waiting for the 2024 CX90. 🙂

But the overall driving experience is excellent way more engaging. While I agree that the engine can be loud, we find it quiets down when it warms up. Very good review.

Just got a CX-9---had a 2011 Odyssey. You certainly know what you're talking about. That Honda was a float-boat with extremely soft steering, to the point of being dangerous in accident avoidance. I had a 2000 Odyssey - handled like a race car, then a 2005, which wasn't quite as good, but still good. When Honda came out with the 2011 I think they were trying to compete with my father's Oldsmobile!

What a difference a few weeks makes. Seeing Touring trim level CX9 in GA $4k below MSRP. 2022 models $38k Soul Red, black interior. Touring Plus @$40k. Clearing them out to make room for the CX90 perhaps?

We have a 2022 CX-9 carbon edition. It has the captain's chairs in the second row without the center console and the 3rd row sits 3 its a 7 passenger SUV. We are older and have no small children so not a big issue for us. We had a nissan kicks prior to buying the CX-9 and it was too small to haul a lot of things plus it had a very small gas tank and not good for long distance driving, it was good city vehicle, its other flaw was it couldn't get out of its own way. Also, the kicks had a touch screen good luck seeing the screen once it's loaded with fingerprints. We are in our mid 60's and the CX-9 is the most luxurious and probably the most expensive vehicle we have ever owned. The comparable SUVs didn't have as many options and they were more because they were selling for way over invoice at least at the time. We test drove the CX-50 and I didn't like it, it wasn't as comfortable as the CX-9. I forgot what we paid for the CX-9 carbon edition, I think it was like $45K

We have the '21 and got the Touring trim BECAUSE we didn't want the center console. Also, the engine is one of my favorite features and has a pleasant growl. With 93 octane, you get 23 more horsepower. Plus we saved about $4K by opting for the lower trim level that had everything we wanted and nothing we didn't.

I own a cx9 and I do not agree on the engine feeling, it's true when you first push the accelerator pedal you hear the engine reb but ones it's going it's a peppy and smooth ride

This is not engine reb but close cabin turbo noise when accelerate

If you want to be fair with this trim, you should refer to the highest (or at least equivalent) trims of the competitors. Your review would be much different if you were checking the Grand Touring with a bench. It would be $3k less with 7 seats and exactly the same features except for the Napa leather seats (still leather seats though). As for the engine, we all like more power but you need to keep mileage in mind as well. Many family owners do care about consumption and I don't know many V6s (in similar price tags and AWD configuration) that do 23mpg combined like this 4-cylinder turbo. I agree though that a manufacturer should give options to the customer so the only negative here is the lack of engine options from Mazda. But for most families this engine is absolutely fine. Also agree about this setup getting older but this year this car will be replaced by the CX-90.

I own the 2023 Grand Touring CX-9 with the 2nd row bench seat. A proper 7 seater as he would say. I love this car! I find the engine very adequate, quiet and refined. My 0-60 is under 8 seconds which isn’t bad for car this size. I don’t think it’s the best choice for a family car with small kids either but my daughter is a young adult with lots of friends that we travel with and we all love the ride.

I don't think I've ever driven a car with a more "adequate" drivetrain. Not slow, not fast. Gobs of torque under 2000rpm (and nothing home over 4500) Next to know vibration transferred into the cabin. It really just feels like a really quiet and smooth turbo diesel. 90% of the time, loafing around town at 1500rpm. It is def clattery on warm-up, the nature of DI, but it builds heat quickly, and then just disappears. The high end trim levels def don't make so much sense when you go to the top end, but it seems that's the only models available for review.. The entry level tiers are great value. The GS-L trim here in Canada (I think similar Touring Plus?) Is very nicely equipped, and compared mid-tier CX-5 with the Turbo, they're almost the same price!

Design is subjective. I love this design. Reliable. I had a telluride and a Nissan before. This one is the best. The way it drives and luxury inside. Super smooth and quiet. I have the touring plus and it cost only 43k. Cx-5 and cx-50 space is limited

Have a signature with bench 2nd row, 2019 8) Also got lucky and scooped it pre-covid for 41.5k OTD Build quality is great, fuel economy is super solid. I also feel the engine feels far more stout with 93 vs 87. IMO it pulls too much timing with 87.

Great review as always. I have the CX8 (2.5 non turbo) and love it. I also love the fact Mazdas don’t chop and change models every year and make their car look old inside and out. Don’t fully agree with everything you said, yes it is big but some people like that. I think you should have had a look at a few trims down, they are much more value for money and drive exactly the same.

This review was excellent! 👍 No hype! I love the inch-by-inch totally technical approach. Mazda engines may not quite be Toyota caliber but they are GOOD and very underrated. I had no idea the underside of the CX-9 was so well shielded! I'm seriously considering one of these but likewise I'm also looking at Mitsubishi Outlander. It kind of seems the Mazda might be a little better but it's hard for me to say...I don't have experience with either brand.

Have a 2019 grand touring and disagree 100 percent that it needs a V6. The 4 cylinder turbo has plenty of power and also gets 26 or 27 mpg on trips.perfect combination. Only one complaint is no side mirror memory for different drivers.
