I don’t think the cooking performance has to due with the oven, but the type of cooking rack used. Although it was said the time and temperatures were identical, the cooking racks were different; perhaps one rack allowed the forced air to better circulate than the other? Eliminate the variable and run the experiment again using the same cooking rack for both ovens, then rate the performance. IMHO, I think there was a GE oven bias.

We don't think the type of rack is as important as where it's placed within the oven. Some ranges include an air fry and some don't, so people will have to provide their own in some circumstances as well. There's no intended bias in our videos and we even favored the LG specifically in one of these comparisons. Overall, we don't think this air fry feature is worth making a purchasing decision over for any brand at this time. Hopefully the feature will improve in the future.

It does matter. It's not a reliable test if there are different variables. The table top air fryers are black inside that will brown better that's why they are all black inside. The GE might have performed because the rack was darker than the one used in the LG.

I also believe they should have used the exact pan…that could really make a difference.

Everything I've cooked in this unit has come out great ru-vid.comUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB ! Everything tastes so good. Some of the recipes I've changed a little to improve the taste. For instance, for french fries which call for no oil, I spray them with olive oil and season them with salt and pepper. They come out great! It makes the best toast I have ever eaten. The recipe I use calls for lightly buttering both sides of the bread. It calls for cooking at 400 degrees for 5 minutes on one side and then 2 minutes on the other side. This time has a lot to do with the kind of bread you are using...so keep an eye on it. Also, the fans in this Ninja are a lot stronger than other air fryers. So lay a metal spoon or something on the bread to keep it from flying around. It's a little extra work to use your Ninja as a toaster but it is worth it!

Which range?

I've noticed that many manuals for new ovens with air-fry features, they specifically mention to install the drip/catch tray at least 4" below the air fry basket. I suspect this is to ensure that the heated air can flow around all sides of the items, which I think would have at least reduced the sogginess of the undersides of the wings, as well as cooking faster overall...but I've no experience with the actual feature.

In order to compare exactly you need to use the same cooking racks. Apples to apples. Were they all aluminium or coated aluminum? What temperature did you use.

I wish I would have done a little more research, I'm disappointed in my GE oven air fryer feature. It takes just as long to air fry as to bake and I don't see much difference.

If you thought the range would out perform the table top you have issues. Yes you should cook them longer in the range, it has to heat up more air. Would you expect a 5,000sqft house to heat up as fast as a 750sqft home? Common sense folks.
@pastorclay82
@pastorclay82 Год назад
Guess you’re not aware that a 5,000sqft house would also have a bigger heater pumping out vastly more heat. So yes if properly built a 5,000sqft house will heat up just as fast. Actually I had a 1000sqft house which rarely got up to proper temp due to an undersized unit.

It needs to be noted that the air fry feature for gas ranges (what I'm considering purchasing) adds at least $250 to the price (Home Depot prices the date of posting). Additionally, if you want wifi for the range even more. Which I'm quite worried about breaking. But the features interest me. But let's face it, considering $250 you can buy a much less expensive full featured stand alone air fryer. Thank you for one of the only videos looking into this!

We looked at our local appliance store and got a GE gas oven with air fry and convection for $300 less because of scratch and dent!!!! So far, we love it!

i have not had good results with my gas range air fryer. i have been using air fryers since they came out, and the gas range air fryer was a big disappointment, requiring longer cook times and higher temps, without achieving what the countertop model can do. for what it's worth, i dont recommend spending the extra money for this feature. there is a reason air fryers are electric. as this video states, you can get the same results by using convection and broiler features.
@GasGotti

Yeah I have an LG and you have to kinda tweak the temps a bit higher if on air fry mode. The convection function works much better than the air fry mode.

Thanks for this. We’re in the process of remodeling our kitchen and picking a range is on the list. I had thought about an air fry option. But now I think it’s not so important as a consideration, just more of a novelty at this point. I think a quality convection feature is more important for our needs.

We got the ge air fryer range. It is different. I moved the rack a bit higher. For wings I put them at 450 degrees on parchment paper. I did flip them and it takes about 45mins to make some frozen wings very crispy. We have only had it 3 weeks. It was 50$ more then the ge without it.

I have the GE and it just doesn't air fry as well as the counter top version. Also the grease flies all over the oven and can make a bit of a mess. Not really worth the effort.

If you say air frying has a top heat and dont flip them, then the top heat wont get underneath the wings, even in my countertop airfryer... you should be filliping them
@YaleAppliance1
@YaleAppliance1 2 года назад
For our test we followed the manufacturers directions. In this case, it didn't call for flipping. Also our tabletop air fryer didn't call for flipping so it was consistent between tests. With just a broil element it would of course make sense to flip during cooking. With convection added in it *should't* be as necessary in theory and perhaps that's why the manufacturers directions omit that. The results aren't where they need to be currently.

Finally a video which answers the question, what's the difference in Air Fry and Convention. So, question on the last comment, do ovens which have convection/fans allow you to use both the fan and broil heat at the same time? Thanks
@YaleAppliance1
@YaleAppliance1 2 года назад
Yes, many ranges have convection broil modes allowing you to use convection with top heat.

If you need a new range or are remodeling. The additional cost of the air fry feature (it will also have a convection bake feature). The cost addition is not that much (prices are coming down as manuf. add the features to more ovens.) Remember. A counter top air-fryer takes up counter space and does smaller quantities of food . Also they may only be half the price of the additional feature on a full sized oven. How long will the air-fryer last and can ir be repaired??? Decisions-decisions. Each oven as usual will always be a little different. Cooking time and temp. Adjustments will be necessary. (My 2 cents)

This is what I'm thinking too, I'm wonder if the fact you used a oil pan immediately under the chicken wings could be preventing the airfry from cooking the bottom. Maybe it needs to be near the bottom and hae more airflow for the wings.

i agree with your assessment--in a gas oven, the air fry feature is a big disappointment, requiring longer cook times and higher temps. i thought the same thing--i could do this under the broiler and get the same results.

I just bought an electric Whirlpool with wifi. There was an over the air software update that added the air fry feature at no cost. Nice surprise. I compared it to my tabletop model and what I noticed is the tabletop cooks better in a fraction of the time. The one advantage I see in the Whirlpool is obviously how much more will fit and I will say its so quiet I wasn't sure it was even working. All in all I'll keep my countertop.

Really appreciated this video; just bought an LG range from Yale with this feature. I love this company because they are up-front about pros and cons and this is a good example. BTW, if you want awesome wings in the oven, use Alton Brown's method for steaming, cooling, baking. Tastes like fried :D

If you are doing a comparison why would you use a different basket for the 2 ovens? You can't really tell if your observed differences are due to the oven or the basket. Bad testing design.

Thank you. Some food for thought. Still confused. Bought highly ranked counter top Cuisinart air fryer. It burned everything I put in it despite following their instructions. Returned. About to buy a range and I guess having air frying function simply doesn't hurt to have. The question is rather which brand.
@YaleAppliance1
@YaleAppliance1 2 года назад
Go with any of them. One does not do it appreciatively better than another and none of them do it to the level that would meet someones expectations who have a countertop air fryer. We like GE and LG as brands who happen to have this feature.
