Should You Buy a VEGA 64 In Late 2019?

It't huge, hot and heavy, but is it worth buying? AMD RX VEGA 64 graphics cards can be found for a fraction of their original price on second hand selling sites, but should you purchase one, or just opt for the even cheaper VEGA 56 instead?
Let's find out shall we?
Specs:
AMD Ryzen 5 3600
16GB 3200MHz DDR4
Gigabyte Windforce OC RX Vega 64 8GB
Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W
Thanks for watching :)

@sayan mukherjee Yeah you need some luck i guess. I have to say its on a custom loop and i delidded it too. I mean, you are lucky when your 9900k goes 5ghz all core, its rare to see a 9900k going up to 5.1ghz without overheating in normal cases. I mean, silicon lottery sells 5.1ghz 9900k's for almost $1000, its insane.

Great video, subbed! The thing with the Vegas, at least for FPS players, is the frame rate lows, especially the 1% lows. In that regard, the Vega 64 is a bit stronger than you suggested over the 56, but still much better than comparable geforce cards. When smooth mouse movement is everything, these cards do very well. @M4Looney
@M4Looney 4 года назад
Yeah, mine runs on 2GHz and 1130 mV (Eiswolf 240 AiO in a loop with a Eisbaer 140 AiO from Alphacool) . 30mV higher than stock but 200 MHz (~11 % faster) with HBM2 from 1000 MHz oced to 1150 MHz (PT+20). Temps around 48°C / 90°C Junction. Will eventually try to go higher... Consumes ~280 W of GPU power under full load. When using a 60 fps cap at 4k and some games will hit about 80 fps and more it will only consume around 150W. But it doesn't matter anyway I'm only playing like 1h average a day. Getting tired after work... Even if I would play 3h a day it would cost me 100€ more over 2 years when compared to a 150W GPU. Of course the initial purchasing costs were higher than a 150W GPU. Now, I'm not regretting the decision because the card will be for sure futureproof and I will be able to use Ultra textures for many years from now... I don't need Ultra settings. Most important to me is that the Image is crystal clear and sharp.

@M4Looney
@M4Looney 4 года назад
@@geerstyresoil3136 That's a pretty good overclock. I'm not sure if I want to go higher with my overclock. I tried 1150 mV and 2020 MHz which was not stable... Maybe I will try something like 33% power target (as the card is actually clocking ~30 MHz below 2000 mHz). It just doesn't make sense to me to give ~ 50 mV and more to the GPU for each 50 MHz clock increase. So a 100 MHz increase from 2 GHz would run at ~ 350W+ what would be a little too high for me for 24/7 usage... My Temps are not the best for a liquid cooled setup. I maybe have ~ 10°C Junction temp delta that I can "spend". By the way, how high are your temperatures and how high are your fan RPMs?

Nvidia Titan has it beat (the blower card makes a much more realistic whoosh and the vent holes create a turbulent roar and vortex sound). But the ultimate is the FireGL-V8650 as that thing is deafening (seriously, wear hearing protection, it’s insane), it’s extremely loud at idle even since it’s like 200w idle and running 75c even though it’s louder than a vacuum cleaner while doing so... I was crazy enough to have it cranked to 100% fan with a 20% overclock and it thermal destabilized at like 120c (I’m not sure the Vram temp, it has 32 Vram chips covering the front and back of the card, it’s truly insane!)

Performance wise, it seems to surpass the 2070 (stock) in some games, and comes withing 10% in others, so basically a 2060 (at 2K res, with second highest preset most of the time) UserBenchmark puts it in the top 1.6% so I guess I got a little lucky with my silicone as well.

@@Black-ny7gv when i just got the card, brand new (like 3 days after it's launch, rx480 8gb btw) first demanding game i used it for was the witcher 3 card was at 88 degree all the time, at 1680x1050 and high details with lowered grass i had about 80fps, which is fine, but these temps were terrifying the g1 software was like the worst ever, it had almost no options, i could've only set mode to performance or quiet, but then, whenever it was running, the card would randomly go to 100% fan speed, no matter the load or temps, and it wouldn't go down until pc restart, not to mention its option to change rgb on the card was basically dead what i've discovered after, was that no matter what, fans wouldn't go higher than i believe 70%, so i uninstalled that insult to humanity called g1 gaming software, and installed proper msi afterburner, only to find out that fans when at 100% keep the card in 80 degree in aforementioned witcher with same settings, so 8 degree lower, but GOD WAS IT LOUD, i was forcing myself to play on these setting for the sake of the card, but even i had enough after 2 weeks then it wasn't that bad, i settled down on overwatch, so my card was mostly fine, another problem appeared when i got 144hz 1080p monitor, it was BAAAAD it had freesync, and even trough that this, card was stuttering like hell, i am sure i've been loosing like 20% off all frames, and the card was hot again, and because it was overheating and shutting down, i had to play with 100% fans again (i was passionate about OV at the time, so i played it a lot back then) then far cry 5 came out, and this is where the bullshit have peaked - card was shutting down after 5 minutes of gameplay, 1080p minimal details, 100% fan speed from beginning then i got used (not after mining) MSI 1080 somewhere around rtx launch, so it was fairly cheap, quiet, blazing fast, no problems, loved it, have it till today so, because of that one thing, i will never again buy any gigabyte/aorus product, and most likely any radeon as well EDIT: one of the other comments reminded me of one thing, "try undervolting" so i tried, 0.01V lower at 100% usage in wattman or whatever it's called, and card would crash everytime, so no, undervolting wasn't the solution

Nice video and comparison :) I'd probably choose the Vega 64 because it has a few more frames in it, which could make the difference - but then again, a decent power supply is a must as well. At least it would indirectly heat up the house :).

@@SpazziJackazzi I googled a bit and it seems like the Gigabyte OC versions (the one in the video) have way more issues than the others. Also, I don't think it has to do with silicon quality, probably faulty PCB design, looks like gigabyte was trying to push these Vegas too far. On that note, Vegas use HBM2 and are quite different from the regular DDR/GDDR PCB designs, maybe that also adds up to the issues... Still, I'm not entirely sure what really fails on these cards that actually kills them.

My brother owned one. Looked like a solid card. And yes random freezes. Black screens. All the time. But when it did run it ran beautifully. 75 fps locked on most AAA games with a slight under volt. I ended up selling him my Nitro Vega 64 and buying a 5700 XT Nitro. And all his black screens went away. So obviously it was that card. Probably just needs some thermal pads and new high end thermal paste. But I wasn't going to deal with the warranty or break the warranty. Ended up selling it.
@Janeichen
@Janeichen 4 года назад
@@Andy-hi9do There are/were major problems with the Gigabyte cooler design on the early Vega cards and early firmware. I don't remember exactly if it was VRAM or something else, but I've seen some teardowns that show a horrible design on r/AMD. They are prone to simply breaking because of that and should simply be avoided. The early Gigabyte Vega cards are hot crap. I've read that they fixed it later, but if you buy used, you don't really know if it's old stock - even if it was bought recently.

The one I've bought is brand new (Gigabyte Vega 64 OC) so I'd really appreciate if you gave me a run down of how that model was to set-up and how well it runs a year later. I'm new to stuff like BIOS flash and undervolting but I was interested by the community who actually really love this card for its capabilities when modified. What did you have to do to get it running fine in working order? (e.g. did you update BIOS? and how easy was it to undervolt?)

The Vega 56 (especially if you can get the version with Samsung HBM2) can be flashed to a Vega 64 BIOS for a nice 5-10% speed bump provided you can keep it cool. I have a reference design Vega 56 with this setup. Though the fan speed and noise is pretty bad for such performance gains. All in the all the Vega 56 have been higher end used GPU sweet spot for over a year now. Though with it dipping into more the mid tier of GPUs that might be not as true today as it was in the past.

I noticed the GPU dropped below 95% usage and in my experience it's almost always because the CPU cannot keep up.
