With the rising cost of new Harley Davidson motorcycles many riders are looking into purchasing an older Harley Davidson. In this week's video I explain the 3 primary reasons why people seek out older Harley's and I share my experience of having bought a 28-year-old Harley, how much I paid and how much I invested to make it road ready.
View my 1996 Softail Heritage Special Build Series- From purchasing the bike to fixing it up and making it road ready to my first ride I share my experience as it's happening

I purchased nice clean 1998 Electra Glide Classic in August and Love It. Paid $3K and stuck another $1500 into it to make it road ready ( tires, brakes, and a motor mount ) and with license and liability insurance. This left me enough for extra like phone mount, battery tender, rain gear, and even picked up a really nice chariot trailer. Now think about having all this for less than $6000, all paid for cash with absolutely no loans. Beats having a $25-30K loan and paying off a bike that I can’t ride year round up here in Wisconsin.

I thought you were talking about OLD bikes, I have & ride a 1976 FXE Shovelhead. Am 2nd. owner, no idea of mileage, cheap aftermarket speedo's. Bought as a basket piece for $1100, but she has never left me on the side of the road. Been riding since 1964, first Harley in 1974, Sporty XLH 1000. Last time in Sturgis was 1981 on a 1971 FLH - those were the days - could camp in the city park for FREE !!!, 2 eggs, hash browns & coffee $2.50. That won't even get a cup of coffee today !!! God only knows how much money I have in her, custom parts, but motor is still stock 74 inches, and frame has never been cut. Still puts a smile on face just looking at her !!!!

That’s awesome! Goes to show that you can get into Harley’s affordably and don’t need to play the upgrade game. For this video I decided old bikes were defined as the age when warranty companies and most HD dealers consider a model year unserviceable, which is 20 years. My softail being 28 was the example. These days shovels are like the Panhead finds from the 90’s expensive and uncommon. Congrats on keeping yours on the road!

U.K. 2007 Dyna Twin Cam owner here. Bought the bike as a neglected project a year ago, got the factory manual, buy my parts from the internet, do all my own spanner work. Bike now runs like a dream, draws attention whenever I park it up, stands me in for about £7000. Far better than an 8 year debt from the Harley dealer for a £40,000 new bike!

They're as simple as riding mowers. Not joking. That's why the parts count on my Panhead is little different than my FXR. Harleys are remarkably cheap over time as they're so easy to keep for life.

I’m in Australia so the prices I’ve paid are way overinflated but that’s what it is. I like to do as much as I can on the bike, certainly the three hole fluid services but if it’s too tricky I take it to someone who knows. @@KennyQuestShow I have a lot of time to waste on hobbies, pair that with the fact that over the years, to many mechanics have just done a horrible job on anything I or my wife have paid them to do, I learned that nobody is going to know my equipment better than I do. Learn to do I yourself and you will save loads of money in the long run. Need a tool? Get it, in the end, buying the tool might cost you a LITTLE bit more than paying a mechanic, but the next time, you don't have to buy the tool. Hint, don't pay for name brand, pay for warranty reliability... that used to be craftsman, then their warranty went to garbage.... harbor freight isn't all that bad for home hobby. Honestly if you lived anywhere close to me, I would say come use my shop.

Now I can’t say that I know what a carbed sporty feels and sounds like while riding, since my 21’ has EFI, but the sound of it is very intoxicating and the ride is fun. I also have a 92 Electra Glide Ultra Classic and a 91 springer softtail. I'm going to add another bike I bought a couple of months ago its a 1982 flt, this one is without a fairing (this was a common conversion) single headlight with dual running lights, it's been lowered and a 19" large black spoke front wheel, 16" apes and a custom very dark green metal flake paint job. (No badging anywhere) Runs great, but this winter, I will replace the transmission seal and primary seals. ( Very small leak) It's also got dual straight pipe fishtail exhaust (sounds awesome) All for the grand sum of $3,000.

Just saw Billy Lane of Choppers Inc fame say the EVO was the last mechanics engine. Though the T/C had its issues as well as the M8 early on it’s hard to point a finger, IMO they honed the EVO year after year and the 94-99 models are the fruits of those processes.

I traded an M8 Limited after a few years and 35k miles QUICKLY when my wife quit riding...went back to 2007 Road King Custom. 96 twin cam, Thundering Rhineharts, 16" bars and about zero electronics. I've had 10 HDs over the decades... but the bike i enjoyed the least was that mini van/couch Limited. I used to say it had no soul. No shake, no thunder, no personality... but it was nice to have those memories of my wife crossing the country with me for awhile. I plan on rebuilding my 2007 when it hits 200,000. I'm gonna roll 62,000 the next ride - which is tomorrow!!!! I took the day off and am riding to support our son, about 2 hours away, who's a firemen on 9/11.

There are still plenty of low milage, garage kept, 20 year old bikes out there, for less than $6K, that to the average person, looks exactly like a brand new Harley. I don't have new Street Glide money, but I have used Electra Glide Classic money. I bought a 2002 a few months ago. I fixed a couple of things on it, and can now pretty much, ride it anywhere. I wouldn't buy anything old that was left outside in the weather. Those are going to cost you a crap load in parts, even if you get the bike for free.

@KennyQuestShow
@KennyQuestShow 4 месяца назад
Aesthetically, I think that is what they are doing with the ICON collection. I don’t think they could repop old shovels, pans and EVO engines due to emissions. S&S still makes those engines. H-D might be able to recreate the rocker top cover like third parties do now, where you can buy pan head and shovel rocker top covers for your twin cam and EVO. I think beyond what they are doing with the ICON models it becomes very niche, and they’ll leave that for the aftermarket to address.

Almost 4 decades of "nothing but new HD's for me" are over. I don't care for the new designs. Just bought an '06 Road Glide in excellent shape for less money than the local dealer is marking up the new CVO's over msrp. There are just way too many used bikes out there. I sold 2 year old EG standard and a year old Pan America. Besides getting the cash out of those two, I'm enjoying the 06 way more.

👆🏼This I understand. Dealers are taking the fun out of buying a bike. Inflating the cost and abusing their customers with inflated prices thousands over MSRP. Enough is enough. The person posting the video is wrong about Harley Dealers. If the dealership is enrolled in the factory early model program they can and will service your old Harley. They can and will sell you parts as well. Simply call Dealers and ask if they are participating in the Early Model Program. Some of us actually know about the motor company because we graduated from MMI.

This is what this poster is talking about: www.harleydavidsonmechanicschool.com/motorcycle-mechanics-institute.php This is a program that a school with two locations in the U.S. offers it’s students. Whether a dealership participates or promotes this is up to them. In my area none of them do. Whether a graduate of MMI took course program and is employed at a dealership will require you to ask your dealer and who knows if the person you ask at the counter knows the education level of each technician but it’s worth asking.

Most dealers of other bikes, it's TEN years old and they no longer will wrench them. Not a Harley fan myself. The dealers have fixed all that for me. You are just the next SUCKER when you walk into a HD dealership. Don't want to deal with them when the bike needs wrenched either. But your points about older bikes apply to ANY brand of bike. I would own a victory now, but support for parts went out the window this year. Not gonna rely on the very spotty aftermarket to keep one on the road.

@@KennyQuestShow True, you can usually find independent mechanics that work on bikes, but at some point parts become not availible anymore. At least new parts, then eventually the used part market dries up too. Bikes are not like cars and trucks. 20 years after a model no longer is made, there are not enough parts sold to justify production of replacements. Maybe your Harley will not suffer this fate, but most will. Victory being one now. There are still tons of them around, but no more parts support really. If something major happens, the bikes become scrap now.

@@jamesw.3491 I went into this with the assurance that almost every single part on my bike has been duplicated by a third party company or is still a commonly used part in production. I bought an 88 Softail a few years ago. It has been a money pit, and I've had to put a lot of money into it, over the last few years. Everything, and I mean everything has had to be fixed or replaced. Upside: I love the Evo, the bike looks great, and I finally hit everything right. Downside: they don't make the parts anymore, repairs you can't do yourself are expensive, and every time you think you have it right something else breaks. It's like a bitch of a wife you should leave, but she's gorgeous and you love her.

I remember when your 1996 Heritage Nostalgia/Special was introduced. It was a highly sought-after bike. I believe the MSRP was around 16K but dealers were getting 5K or more over MSRP. That would be 41 K in 2024 dollars. An equivalent bike today would be the just introduced 2024 Hydra Glide with an MSRP of 25K. The 2024 bike is a superior bike in every way than the 1996 bike.And way less expensive. Actually about half the price. So for anyone who claims H.D.'S are too expensive today and no longer for the working man, doesn't know what they are talking about. Harleys were ALWAYS expensive motorcycles but are actually less expensive today than ever before and are priced right in line with Indians, BMW's and Honda's.

When I ask them why an Indian, they say that they traded in the HD for an Indian because they get more bike for their buck, they're faster stock, better gas mileage and they're better looking. It seems Indian is getting set to take the market from harley. In fact, dealers may stop taking Harley's as trade-in's because they are flooding the used bike market, and they are starting to get less for the HD bikes. Which means that new riders can get them even cheaper than a dealer would be asking.

Hi Kenny your videos have not came up in a very long time until this one. I looked and I am still subscribed, sometimes RU-vid has unsubscribed me. There was a guy on a video that described how to get a Harley into neutral. I tried it and it works, and I do it a lot now. You slowly let the clutch out until the bike starts moving. Slowly pull the clutch back in as you lift the shifter. I am still riding my 98 Fatboy witch I have no plans to sell. I love that Evo sound. After I hit a deer with it, I bought a 07 Ultra Classic for $6800 with the money I got from the insurance. The heat was off to have a rideable bike, so it took me a couple of years to get the Fatboy back on the road. I was sure happy to hear that Evo again. I thought I had the best of both worlds. Sadly in August I hit my second deer with the Ultra. One minute I am riding my bike and having a good time and three days later I wake up not knowing were the hell I'm at or what I'm doing there. The only thing I know is I hurt like hell. That turned my world upside down and had my family and friends pretty worried for a while. I am pretty good now just not totally cured. I bought a 2012 Electra Glide Classic for $7500. I got a lot more money from the insurance than I paid for the Classic. When I went to look at the Classic at a mans house in the country, I didn't leave his house until after dark. About a half mile from his driveway I dam near hit a big buck. you can't get much closer than I did without hitting him. Don't they know playing chicken is dangerous and if they have a bad day, nobody wins. Next weekend is deer season, and I hope I get mine the right way. Ride safe and remember the deer are sneaky sometimes.
