Given the current rumors for the 4080 Super I thought it would be helpful to estimate how the gaming efficiency would change against the 7900 XTX. Current rumors suggest an MSRP of $999 US and a performance increase of 3-5%. Let's take the middle point and assume a performance gain of 4% and for the price let's assume that a Strix 4080 Super OC variant would be $200 cheaper, so the new price would be $1,350. Assuming that the price of the Nitro 7900 XTX doesn't change then the advantage in gaming efficiency or FPS/$ reduces from 45.7% to 22.0% for Avg FPS and from 47.5% to 23.5% for %1 Low FPS. As you can see the Nitro+ 7900XTX still offers better value, which explains why Nvidia is aggressively pricing the 4080 Super. AMD could decide to counter with a further price reduction, which would be great. This type of competition is fantastic for consumers and I really hope it continues. I will place the new gaming efficiency chart at the end of the benchmark file on my website: blackbirdpc.tech/ UPDATE: turns out the 3-5% uplift was spot on with 4% being the average at 4K, so my "prediction" above was spot on ... gotta love it when that happens!!

very nice work here ! I agree with, the XTX's raw performance will still better by 2-4% comparing the super version of the 4080 ... I don't understand their strategy here, they didn't even upgraded the VRAM ! On the price view it's even worse, for example, in France, Spain or Germany a 4080 normal version is arround 1200 euros at least, the super version will be +300 euros more or even higher with brands like Aorus, MSI, Gigabyte etc... I don't get it why they call it "super" if it the same product XD but more expensive. For my PC I just wait my final component the GPU, and for sure will still go with a XTX, +8 GB more VRAM, the price will drop for sure tomorrow and it still be faster. The only downside is Ray Tracing ofcourse but if I can boost everything on ultra i dont really care about RT especially paying like almost 40% more ...

@@darkness3038 it's probably just to try and find an excuse to add the "super" name, market with games that run faster on it than the xtx and sell it. $1000 is still ridiculous, but it's better than $1200 I guess.

Thank you for the update brother! Looks like AMD might still be better in terms of price to performance (at the high end). Between the 4060 & 7600 though it's not as clear. Hoping the rumored 7600 xt can also give better value

This cards doesn't make sense to me.. Slightly "faster" on paper, in reality.. is the same card.. Marketing will do their part of the job ... and here we go again.. 4060 + ti .. saga. I miss a lot oldschool approach, when we had 4 tiers if i remember and each tier had 1 card version.. Nvidia fishing here.. flooding the market with same bait..ofc different prices.. because most people think, more expensive is better.. Imagine that people who are not into this world, but they used to buy xx80 card.. so having this TI or Super names in it.. they will think that's new Super Titan or 4090 🙃

I truly have had an incredibly positive experience with AMD lately. Nvidia cards are very good but don't offer enough to justify the asking price anymore. Ray tracing and DLSS are cool technologies, but not $500-1000 more for the card technologies. All of my previous PCs were Nvidia/Intel and my latest is an all AMD build that has been awesome.

As someone with a 7900 XTX, I’m going NVIDIA next time. So many PC crashes. I already RMA’ed one card. I’m debating doing it again. The 7900 XTX will probably go down as the buggiest GPU ever. I’ve owned 7 total GPUs. 2 of those were 7900 XTX’s and they both crash my PC multiple times per week. If you won the lottery and don’t have a crappy 7900 XTX, good for you. But it’s Russian roulette out here and I’ve bit the bullet twice now. An extra $100 to get a rock solid card that won’t crash constantly is definitely worth it.

@@sargonsblackgrandfather2072 you are right, 350W is not that high ... the issue is when we compare the current gen cards from Nvidia and AMD, and we look at Watt/FPS ... most people don't really care about power draw however where efficiency is needed is at the top end when trying to push performance, this is why AMD was unable to produce a card with higher performance than the 7900XTX. I just bought the Sapphire Nitro Plus 2 months ago. Ive always been on the AMD platform currently the Ryzen 9 5900x X570 PG Velocita motherboard 3600mhz ram. I always had a Nvidia GPU though. Ive went from the GTX 1050 (my 1st GPU the memories lol!), to the GTX 1070, GTX 1080, RTX 2070 Super, and my previous GPU was the RTX 3080 (10GB) Gigabyte Vision (all white). I wanted to try AMD so i went with the Sapphire Nitro Plus 7900 XTX. I will give my HONEST OPINION. Most people just because the have the GPU will say, "Its the best I wouldnt change a thing" and to be honest that is true for me. Somewhat.... First I will say that when it comes to pure rasterization, the 7900xtx Sapphire Plus is a BEAST! I was also hesitant because Im a content creator as well as a gamer and Ive always heard that in editing Nvidia cards are superior (CUDA Performance) and although that is true the 7900xtx is no pushover especially with the 24GB of VRAM. My only issue is ofcourse......Ray Tracing. Now Im not the biggest fan of Ray Tracing but if im going to spend a thousand dollars Id like to expect that type of performance and this is where i fell AMD falls short. The upscaling on AMD (FSR 2 or 3) doesent look as good versus DLSS on Nvidia. For example I love Alan Wake 2, CyberPunk, (most Action RPG's and Survival Horror Open World Games) and im on a 1440p monitor and its just not worth turning on. I leave Ray Tracing AND FSR off and just play max settings at Native resolution. Im still getting 70- 79 fps so its definitely playable (in regards to Alan Wake 2). If I had to pick all over again Id go with the 4090 but when you take the price to performance you receive from the 7900xtx im definitely not disappointed. Im just not gonna say, "the 7900 xtx is the best" just because I bought one. Lying to myself only hurts myself even though it all comes down to personal preference and what your looking for. For gaming and editing the 7900xtx is a beast and the Sapphire Plus is amazing. You dont have to upgrade GPU adapter, it comes with physical bios switch but you can download the app and switch from the Bios on your desktop screen and it comes with an already overclocked Bios.

@blackbirdpctech can you please quickly explain how av1 helps in editing? Im a content creator, but im not with the specifics on how the software part works. I use Wondershare filmora x with my 7900xtx, and it's good, I thought it would of been worse considering how people said AMD GPU'S wasnt good (in regards to content creation that is). I just want to know if it's worth it for me sticking with the 7900 xtx because im using it for gaming and editing. I have a ryzen 9 5900x, so i can't really upgrade anymore unless i move to the am5 platform, but im about to get a 4k monitor. Do you think a ryzen 5900x with 7900xtx is good for top teir gaming and editing? I know it's decent for now, but im all about future proof in regards to my pc

I'm reselling my 3080 ti while I can still get a decent price for it. I'm counting on gamers that love ray tracing to get a good price. I'll use the money on a used or open box 7900 xtx. The 7900 xtx has about the same ray tracing performance which is good enough for me. I'm not paying more than twice as much for 20% extra rasterisation performance (rtx 4090). I don't mind paying 200 to 300 a year to get a 30 to 40% boost in rasterisation performance. I change cards almost every generation if the rasterisation performance increase is significant. I skipped the nvidia 2000 series and kept my 1080 ti because the performance uplift was not there. I'll sell the 7900 xtx next year if the next gen gives at least a 40% boost and doesn't cost 2000 dollars and once again I'll only buy an open box or refurbished. Update just found my 7900 xtx. Common misconception is AMD is very bad with ray tracing. While it's true that AMD Radeon 7000 struggles in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk is an nvidia sponsored game. The TUF runs cool, is extremely energy efficient, and its ray tracing performance is incredible. I agree that Nvidia is unlikely to lower prices of existing cards or to price Super cards lower than their existing non-Super counterparts. That would be very un-Nvidia-like. Also, it would piss off retailers who still have stocks of the earlier cards, and probably inbound orders as well; pricing Supers at or below their predecessors' MSRPs could force at-a-loss sales of the older cards. But then, for example, who with working brain cells would buy a 4070Ti, for whatever price, if a 4070Ti Super could be had for the same or less money? That's just not going to happen. I suspect Nvidia will slot the Supers into the existing price gaps and leave non-Super prices where they are. I'd really like to be wrong here.

As someone who bought a 7900xtx I honestly wouldn't recommend it IF you're big into emulating and such. AMD drivers still have issues with a lot of modern emulators and ever certain games, to this day. I ended up trading my 7900xtx for a 4080 after about a year because the driver issues bothered me far too much. However, if you're just a general gamer who plays new games and some older games you'll likely see little differences between the cards besides RT performance. So, at the end of the day it's down to what you plan to use the card for.

I run 3 32" 1440p 165hz monitors, sometimes use VR with an old Oculus. Right now my 1080ti is doing great with the triples @ 1080p (80-100fps). I hear Nvidia is still the way to go with triples and VR especially with iRacing. I have no issues with surround right now and am happy with the experience (heard eyefinity was abandoned years ago and doesn't work well). However, AMD seems like better value per fps so I'm at a real toss up on this one. Leaning towards getting the 4080Super if it's priced at $999. I know that Ray Tracing has been purposely associated with Nvidia but if you step back and look at the technologies it becomes clear that RT is simply a better way of drawing graphics. The challenge is the way RT is implemented today ... Nvidia and AMD both "cheat" because their cards don't have the horsepower necessary to do full path tracing. But mark my words, full path tracing is the future and the next few generations of cards and games will embrace it. Rasterization still looks amazing today, but there will be a large shift away as GPU's get more powerful.

considering the price of the 4080 super at 999 is confirmed i would say the advantage now goes to the 4080 i personally think amd needs to respond with at minimum 100 price cut to the 7900xtx if not 150-200 to stay competitive. and this coming from someone who running amd graphics card. the value proposition of dlss, nvenc encoder, plus way better ray tracing even at pretty much same rasterization performance makes 7900xtx at 999 a poor deal 799 would for sure make 7900xtx the better buy because even at 899 4080 may be the better buy. 849 would probably make the better buy go towards 7900xtx.

I guess this summary didn't age well now did it? The 4080S is only $50 from the 7900XTX. The 4080S is better because it can handle RT better and DLSS is better than FSR, so a $50 premium for that isn't too bad, IMHO.

@@blackbirdpctech First, your final comparison was on the 4080 not the 4080S. At $1000, compared to the $1,100 Saphire XTX, I'd go 4080S all day. Even at $50 less for the XTX I'd go 4080S because of much better RT performance. Your win-loss chart is a bit lacking and potentially misleading. You show "wins", but you don't show by what percentage. Most reviews I have seen put the 4080 and 7900XTX on par as far as gaming performance, at least in raster. We could cherry-pick games that favor Nvidia and that chart would look completely different. And when you turn on RT, the 4080 pulls ahead. At $1000 I think it's a better choice versus the XTX. Now, to be fair, paying $1,000 or even $950 is a bit expensive for just game play and I would say that neither of these cards are sensible choices for gaming.

@tclark5481 let me address all of the items you bring up: 1. As I mentioned I added a new gaming efficiency chart before the 4080 Super was released ... it was included as a pinned comment. It turns out my prediction of 4% at 4K was spot on. That additional chart shows that with a 4% performance boost and $200 price cut, the Asus Strix 4080S is still about 25% lower FPS/$ than the Sapphire Nitro+ 7900 XTX. 2. My win-loss chart is 100% accurate. It is a high level summary that is presented AFTER I show the detailed benchmarks for every game, as well as a 14 game summary. 3. Most reviewers have no idea what they are doing. I explain my benchmarking approach in one of my earlier videos and why the way most reviewers do benchmarking is fundamentally flawed. Happy to put my credentials and results up against any tech RU-vidr that you can find. Having a lot of subscribers doesn't equate to knowledge or accuracy. 4. The games within my benchmark suite were selected because they are repeatable and therefore are extremely useful for accurate benchmarking. With respect to RT, I did turn on RT in Cyberpunk 2077 ... I ran the game at RT Ultra settings. The 4080 wins and it's in the results. 5. The Asus ROG Strix 4080 and 4080 Super are not $1,000 ... that's the entire point ... they are significantly more expensive, even with the $200 price cut. Please feel free to show me where you can buy that card for $1,000US. I respect and appreciate the fact that you are engaging in a discussion but if you are going to throw words like "misleading" around on my channel then make sure you are accurate. One final point ... I genuinely don't care about brand ... you can checkout my new video on the 4070 Super versus 7800 XT ... in that video I strongly recommend the 4070 Super. I let the data do the talking and try my best to take "feelings" out of the benchmarking process.
