Got my niece a XT3 in 2018 although she wanted an X100V since it was unavailable. I got an EOSM last year with Magic Lantern. Owned a Canon AE1 in the 80s and Nikons in late 1990s. I was with her shooting the Fuji yesterday and wow the photos really are different. She had so much control over her colors while mixing it with the film profiles. I think Fuji being one of the original filmmakers really nailed it. They're small and featureful too. I do agree that Fuji can be hard to service as here in Asia. But Fuji is a keeper with their great sharp lenses. Right now I'm looking on the panasonic S5iix or Fuji XH2s since im more into video and astrophotography which the XTrans has excelled with HA sensitivity. So yeah Canon to Fuji possibly for me too.

I switched to Fuji from Canon and wouldn’t consider going back. Canon & full frame had advantages at one time but for me it’s not an issue! Canon’s issue for me was cost vs return on investment! They taught me a valuable lesson in 2019, just how little they truly valued me as a 20+yr consumer of their products! My advice is simple , use the gear that enables you to get the job done! Use what makes you happy and for me that’s Fuji! My XH2S is on par with the R5 I moved on from! Happy shooting!!📸

Andrew you mentioned something that I don't normally hear and that is photography for the enjoyment of the process. I'm not a professional. I have no intention of becoming professional. I enjoy the process of finding the subject, composing, and capturing the image. The final print is the ultimate result, but unlike a professional I only have to please myself. The act of going out with a camera, for me, anticipates the enjoyment of the whole experience. The Fuji is more akin to working with a film camera which is where I started. Thank you for the thoughtful video, I have appreciated your output over the years.

I was not expecting to get a lot out of this video, but it's actually been one of my favourites and a useful resource to return to. Starting with an x-t20 for our family camera and adding an x-t3 and a few lenses as we went professional, I have always questioned whether we should be just going full frame instead. It is such a complex pareto front, and I think you touched on all the important variables, while avoiding redundant trivialities. It also seems that in 2023 we are finally reaching a consensus that user ability is going to limit you rather than brand/sensor size/medium etc. But you have been showing this for 5 years now, which was a great encouragement to me in my journey, discussing the genuine aspects of the gear but always pointing back to reality and what's important.

Excellent video. I agree with what you said about the differences between Fuji and any full frame system. As a street photographer I shoot Fuji mainly for the size and weight plus I love the dials. The quality of the photos are great too. It all depends on your style of shooting.

Interesting comments about Fuji repair service, I've had great experiences with Fuji service. If you need a camera right away, after they evaluate you camera, they will send you a different refurbished camera right away. As I'm not emotionally attached to any particular camera body, I took the referb and got it back in under 2 weeks and I still have it. Cameras I've sent to Fuji: X-pro 2(I dropped it, still functions just has a loose on/off switch), X-E3 (EVF problem, took the referb), GFX50r (EVF problem too). I shoot both a GFX100s and Fuji X, I think the benefits of a larger sensor is over rated. Especially as a blanket statement. If you are comparing the same sensor technology, the large sensor will give you better dynamic range and better low light sensitivity. Which really only matters if you shoot low light. But if I had to choose between an older Full Frame CMOS sensor and a newer BSI or BSI stacked sensor in APS-C, I'd take the newer sensor all day. Full frame and medium format give you a different look, not better and that's really more about the lenses and less about the sensor. Love my GFX100s for what it gives me, I also love my XE-3 but I also understand its capabilities and limitations. A camera is a tool, you find the one that works best for you.

I dropped my EOS M and it survived. On the other hand my neice' XT3 shutter wouldnt open after a few months unused. The authorized service shop gave me the run around and an astronomical quotation. I read the internet and gave it a few hard knocks and its been working as new again. However, being in love with Canon for decades. i would rather go Fuji as I'm impressed. I shoot mainly videos and the 14-bit depth of color in the xh2s beats the r6ii or r5c still.

The beauty of the XT3/4 (but not 5, sadly) is that you can strip it down and use “basic” lenses and get very pro results from a very compact setup, or you can slap a battery grip on, use the bigger glass/zooms, and basically shoot pro. They’re not perfect cameras but critically, the best glass is definitely way more affordable and makes a difference in terms of results. FF is superior in most ways but I just can’t justify the cost of the stuff I’d want nor am I sure I’d want to drag around a typically larger and heavier setup. APS-C is a great sweet spot.

I've probably spent 100 hours watching/reading/listening to these two compared, and thought about it for a thousand hours myself, and I'm still stuck shooting both. For extreme wide angle, super telephoto, macro, fast wildlife, very low light, super custom in-camera colour, or super technical raw quality, I have the R5. For everything else, the X-T30 II and X-Pro 3 are still preferable. I was hoping either the X-T5, X-H2, R6 II or R8 would let me consolidate into a single system finally, but no. Not quite. I've been in this position for about 8 years, and I fear I'll still be here in another 8. Both systems do their own thing very well, and whichever one I got rid of, I know there would be times I'd miss it and curse my choice.

I had a similar journey. I started with Canon ASPC but moved to Fuji with a slight detour to M43. I liked the smaller, more user friendly cameras and lenses but was unhappy with image quality. I sold Fuji and picked up a Canon 6D and am happy with the image quality for low light. This plus a Fuji X10 for pocketability is the sweet spot for me.

I do photography just for fun, and I have broken a Fuji camera from dropping it (though my repair experience was good in the U.S., this was 2 years ago) but honestly... the dials and tactile controls are huge for me I can't see myself going with another camera. I have an X-T2 and while it is a professional camera it also is like a toy in the best ways. It is a joy to pick up and manipulate the dials, I almost never use auto anything on the camera, I prefer to dial everything in. Not because its better, but because to me the camera is a big, extremely satisfying fidget spinner that gives me something to do with my hands and focus on as an ADHD person... and it also happens to spit out really beautiful photos too. Idk, I just find it fun to walk up to a scene and try to intuitively hand select the ISO, shutterspeed and focal length that is perfect for the shot and then just smoothly take the shot without anything auto. I also HATE editing photos, so the jpegs coming out looking so good on the FUJI is a huge thing for me as well. One last point, I have a silver x-t2, and it looks like a fun vintage camera, which when it comes to photographing normal people in normal situations is an incredibly undervalued advantage. I find that people's walls don't come up when they see me with my fuji, they don't see a guy with a massive black camera and huge lens that sticks out like a sore thumb acting like he magically blends into the environment around him... they just see a guy with a weird old.. film camera? I find photographers with big cameras usually emit an awkward displacement field around them that makes everyone in the vicinity act a bit stiff and artificial. People have to look at the camera taking photos of them, if the camera exhibits a fun, unassuming nature then it inevitably effects them, they relax. It shows in my photos of people I think, I can get a professional camera into situations it would just be awkward or weird to have a massive intimidating black full frame... ...I also get let into places that normally frown on professional cameras, I once had a ticketing person see my camera, go to tell me I can't bring it in and then say "oh, well that isn't a REAL camera, you are fine". Aesthetics, photography is literally all about it, what right do we have as photographers to enter a beautiful environment and take photos of that beauty in our own selfish pursuits while making everyone around us (also trying to enjoy said beautiful environment) stare at a big, ugly, intimidating camera? Durability issues are such a bummer though..

I have both Fuji and Nikon full frame and can only tell the IQ difference when I’m pixel peeping side by side at 100+%. 9/10 times I prefer the Fuji colors and you don’t need to pixel peep to see the color difference. Composition, lighting, and color are what stand out to me and Fuji is what I still prefer shooting. Fuji cameras inspire me more to want to shoot too. Saying all that I still think all your points are accurate and valid. Just stay positive, keep creating, and love what your doing.

I went from Canon, to Fuji for about 2 years, and then went back to Canon. There was a lot to love about Fuji but the autofocus drove me insane and the Canon system is overall much easier to use. SIze, shooting experience and lens quality are the things that makes Fuji good. That’s why I was never drawn to the XH2s as you would rather get into FF systems from other brands. I got a Sony a7iv for Birding and liking the system (Canon seems to be better ergonomics and colors but Sony has more choice and was available easily) though still shooting with Fuji as I have good lens and XT2 is still going strong. RIght now I am all over the place also shooting film and old DSLRs like Nikon D700 and Canon 5d1. As hobbyist I don’t need to commit to a system.

My path is very similar to yours in that I went back to what I began with. In my case it is Nikon, I started with them in 1978 when I was in high school, went to Fuji eleven years ago and as of last year I am back to 35mm (FF) sensors/cameras for all the same reasons, however I will add one more reason as a long time nikon shooter is that I missed using all those old lenses over the generations natively. I did adapt some onto my fuji but I always felt I was not getting all the greatness of the lenses with that APS-C sensor because I wasn't, wasn't utilizing the whole image circle. I did get One Z body but I mainly went back to a top end DSLR (D850) for reasons stated as well that I just love that whole SLR process of shooting.

I sold my R5C and got a X-H2S mostly for size, weight, and lens options. I’m rocking the 18-120 f/4 LM PZ lens and it’s quirky and has issues but I’ve worked around them. The autofocus isn’t bad on the H2S compared to R5C in my opinion. So many more affordable lens options and choices on the X-mount. I also have a Canon R5 so I have best of both worlds.

I hope you are right about the Canon reliability. I am new to them starting with a used 1n film camera about 10 years ago. About a year ago, I picked up a 5D III, and just a few weeks ago, an R6. So, we will see. Coming from the film days, I really liked the tactile feel of the X-T1 as well as the light weight. Seemed to match my experience of using the Nikon F for many decades without the hassle of processing the film. Of the modern digital cameras, I like the relative simplicity of the Canon menus over the other brands, but I don't like the long learning curve of all the digital cameras. That is what attracted me to the Fuji. I could just pick it up and go shooting without puzzling over how to set something up. As for the Canon, I like the compatibility of the EOS system where I can use all my lenses on either film or digital. The technology makes things work better but I don't like having to learn a lot about the functionality. To me, a camera is just a tool whereas I just want to make art.

Came here to see if a Fuji would be a good walkaround for me as I use an r6mkii daily. I do true hybrid work with my camera and started off with an apsc camera a few years back and made the switch to full frame last year and I love it so much more. Majority of my subjects are people so getting that super shallow depth of field is really nice. I grew up around Canon so it was always familiar to me, even shot canon film in college, so Canon has always been the “gold standard” to me, but I do want to venture a bit into another system as a backup just to have something different. I think I might go with Sony as my backup after watching this, no offense to Fuji at all because the colors are great, but colors are so easily manipulated now in PS and LR that I can’t justify that apsc sensor in the Fuji. Super helpful video and really helped me out in making this decision!

> UI/UX designer > refers to cameras as a device. Confirmed 😂 These are some nice usecase points. I've been considering jumping to Canon from Fujifilm too. My X70 and X-T2 died last year, so I upgrade my X70 to the Ricoh GRIII, but Fujifilm hasn't made anything I've wanted in a while. The closest would be the X-E4, but it's overpriced used and out of production. I think if I'm staying with Fujifilm it has to hit that core design ethos of performance x form factor -Pocket rocket. Since they're now trailing behind Panasonic with AF and the X-H2 is bigger than some fullframe cameras, I think I'm out. The R8 caught my eye because it's smaller and lighter than the current Fuji flagships, but 80% an R6II on the inside. Ideally, I'd wait for the M6II to come over to RF mount, but I'm worried that they will give it an EVF and and swivel out screen like the rest of the line, rather than a flip up screen. Which is lame because it's nice to have options. My criteria aren't super wild for a camera either. I only care about 5 things: AF that's on par with the industry, flip up screen, nice out of camera image, enough buttons on the body to assign ISO, WB, and AF-L, reasonably compact quality 35mm and 24mm lenses at least. Wild that there's almost nothing that can check all those boxes. I've waited for a year with no primary body so far, and I've got an Iceland trip coming up, so I'm on a timer. 😬

Sorry Andrew but while I may agree a bit with Canon durability. I think its not an issue with Fuji as with any other brand like Sony. I'm quite disappointed honestly that you're leaving Fuji for the reasons you stated amd I respect your decision. I know that Canon and Sony have better support for creators. But Fuji is beautiful, seductive, portable and relatively inexpensive (contrary to your experience). I'm a Canon fanboy since the 80s. Used Nikon for a decade and am considering an S5iix for my video needs. But the XHS2 is top of my list simply because it is way more advanced than Canon R5 or R6 for the price. Plus it has the film profiles and 14-bit color depth and the fast stacked sensor. Also the Xtrans sensor does well unmodded for astrophotography being more sensitive to Ha (Hydrogen Alpha). I was looking forward to you making do with Fuji despite the challenging financial times. I've seen Andy Mumford and Mark Denney thrive and do well with Fujifilm and I'm more inclined to as well. Canon just don't listenbas much as Fuji to their customers. My apologies but I'm disappointed.

I haven't quite decided, if I will sell or keep the X-H2, but for wildlife I just ordered a Nikon Z8 and the new 180-600 to replace my Fuji X-H2 and Tamron 150-500 kit. I really have to say that I am disappointed in Fuji's Autofocus. They upload demos of their cameras doing all sorts of action shooting and amazing tracking, but they never show the actual images. Even if the box is green, the camera constantly completely misses focus if there's any action.

@@cy9nvs appreciate that! Planning on listing my Fuji gear (minus my x100v) and snagging the Z8. I have a D850 and a 24-70 & 70-200. Could be up and running quickly with an FTZ adaptor.

This had been my dilemma and reason for holding off on upgrading my xt3 to the xt5 / XH2s. Lots of negative feedback on the subject detection & 40 megapixels is overkill on APSC sensor. The 150-600 was also very disappointing (f5.6-f8??)... I loved the 70-300 & Tamron 150-500 but got sick of missing way too many shots due to poor tracking or “being in focus” but jk not really… got the Zf but returned it after a week; great af tracking & IQ but ergonomics not suitable for daily use. Hopefully the z6iii will come out soon to pair with 24-120 & 180-600. Also like having access to more affordable legacy f mount primes (300 f4 / f2.8, 600 f4, etc) which other systems lack and Fuji is nonexistent.

Haha, funny. I just bought a Canon R6ii with a 24-105. Why? I got a bunch of Xseries line up. But Fuji is continously disappointing me. Even rhe newest X-S20 has a autofocus which is so far away from Canon oder Sony. So I keep Fuji though, but will not support Fuji any longer for this miserable product development.

Shot with a Canon F1n for a while. Its meter broke if you were not careful set it down gently. Shifted to an Olympus OM4T. Late into digital and bought the Nikon D100 because it was so refined in use compared to the Canon digital which felt like it was designed by someone from Ford Ferguson. Several years with Nikon until it could not decide if was going upgrade the D300 and foolishly bought a D800. Switched to Fujifilm and have been happy ever since. Current Canons look like potatoes to me. That Ford guy in the design department again?

Canon lenses cost soooo much. Canon 85mm £2700 vs 56mm fuji £800.
@aceflibble
@aceflibble Год назад
Yes, but the Canon is giving you f/1.2 results, whereas the Fuji is giving you f/1.83 equivalent results; the Canon RF 85mm f/2 is around that same price, plus closer focus and IS (but with a worse focus motor and not weather sealed... swings and roundabouts). The Canon 1.2 is also much better-made, has better focus, and is sharper. I actually favour the Fuji myself-the Canon is too big and heavy-but the price difference is absolutely understandable. They're simply not apples-to-apples lenses.

But Fuji has sharp lenses that are smaller and lighter. Christopher Frost finds some Fuji some of the sharpest.

Fun fact: sensor size DOESN'T affect the shallowness of depth of field. There are 3 factors that contribute to this: how close you are to the subject, how close the background is to the subject, and the aperture. NOT THE SENSOR SIZE.

I recently got the XH2S moving from my old A7iii. I’m debating returning the Fuji and getting R6ii so this video is interesting for me. This is my first Fuji and I went XH2S for video specs mostly. The low rolling shutter and insane dynamic range along with photo sims and Fuji color are awesome. I personally have a few grips with video that have me frustrated. I zoom in video (18-55 kit) but with Fuji you get warping and flashing. I’ve researched this and locked all settings with no fix. The video coming out of the XH2S is mind blowing but those issues along with not totally reliable AF/IBIS (in video) have me doing work arounds. Kinda let down but maybe I’m just a newb when it comes to Fuji. I moved away from Sony because I didn’t like the color science but in general the cameras feel like computers. I have access to an EOS RP and for pictures I have zero complaints. The little RP has turned my interest to Canon now.

@@anthobeeSame, i shoot on canon 5d mark iv and rather than getting a r5 i went to xh2s, it‘s a decent camera, but a fuji will never ever match the image quality of a canon full frame. It‘s just magical to look at

This channel was the most influential voice in convincing me to buy into Fuji three years ago. 5 Fuji bodies later I have no desire to ever pick up one of those ugly plastic Canon bodies. It feels like you made this video to try and convince yourself you made the correct choice in switching to Canon, when deep down you know you miss your Fuji? Overall this was a good video and I am sure it will be helpful to those making a brand decision.

I tried moving back to Canon last year. Ergonomics and touch screen were great, but couldn't accept the AA filter for photos. Everything looked fuzzy. Deal breaker.

The problem all these companies have is Sony owns them. Sony makes all the sensors really and they are only going to give companies a generation or two behind what they have in their newest cameras. Canon does make their own sensors but is lagging behind in some regards but they are catching up. Sony had artifacts with this phase detection with backlight being snooted in. Canon never had this issue with their dual pixel technology. So in that way Canon was better and in other ways Sony was better. Its going to be really interesting to see what new sensors will be coming out in the next models.

I am Sorry Andrew for my initial comment! After watching the video again I can still hear the “original you saying” (a statement I’ve always loved and held in highest regard) that the process and moment of creating is at least as important as the result - otherwise it is not True Art, but now as a full time RU-vidr you sometimes just need the end result! I am sorry! Regards Rikard

Fuji feels like a REAL camera. It’s solid metal all around, great tactile dials that are also solid and the lens quality is excellent. Canon has very good image quality but your comparison was with the ergonomics and build quality and Fuji has it beat there imho. Canon is bulbous and plastic, which is what a toy is built like so I find it ironic that you would call Fuji a toy 😂.
@mikethompson3305
@mikethompson3305 6 месяцев назад
You commonly hear people describe a product as a toy, typically when justifying retail decisions. When said in such a fashion it's obviously hyperbole as well as petty and small. Another commonly said thing is describing the difference as night & day, this one is brainless. I really don't mean to be bashful to the OP, I'm simply not that kind of person, but in future if you're going to post a comparative statement try to put a bit more effort into it and actually say what you mean.
