I've kinda had to pull out and put in my cartridges with a little extra force, but i don't wanna do too much because I've had my model one Genesis and Mega Retron HD's cartridge slots both crap out on me
You right my friend gargoyles requires a bug to work. Also Genesis 3 doesn't support RGB out of the box you have to mod it first, one more thing is incompatible with the sege CD and 32x.
I sided with Sega in the 16-bit console wars, so finding a good clone of the Genesis with support for newer television sets is important to me. I bought the Flashback HD earlier and wasn't thrilled with the quality of the emulation... this looks like I'd be much happier with it. Thanks for the review!
Chris McEvoy I own one, you really don't hear it much when you play it yourself. Bit for some reason on the capture cards they always make em look dull. Or the sound is distorted.
This looks like a really solid system. I just like you am more of a casual Mega Drive/Genesis player and I already have a model 1 Mega Drive with RGB so I won't buy this but for someone starting out this seems like a fantastic choice.
I just got my hands on the HD Retrovision Component Cables and, running through an OSSC, it looks amazing. But that is nearly a $300 solution between the cables ($60) and the OSSC ($230). Exactly, if you have nothing and want to play Genesis/Megadrive this is a great way to get started!
RoXolid Productions Ah. I have RGB which works directly with my TV since I'm EU and actually the TV Scales it pretty well. Like it isn't perfect but it looks great from my sofa. That way it cost me the system which I got from a friend for like £15 and the RGB cable which was less than £10. This system is definitely some of the best you get from a simple SOAC plus scaler though. I have to say I was impressed with the results you showed in the video. The fact you get 2 6 button controllers is nice too as they are not very cheap or easy to find. Also currently there is no FPGA mainstream system for Genesis/Mega Drive so this clone is likely the best option for a 3rd party console. I just wish NES clones followed this standard of quality
Neither my capture card or gaming TV recognize the 240P signal, I had to do an OSSC to be able to capture, not a cheap endeavor. I have those videos shot, shot them yesterday, and they will be posted in the coming days. This is probably the best experience I've had thus far with a Genesis clone. It wasn't stereo but other than that it's pretty solid, especially when you consider the low price tag and barrier to entry.
RoXolid Productions Ah fair enough. That makes sense. I think it's because many TVs don't like 240p over component. This is where the Europeans do well as 240p with SCART seems to be always supported. Ah I wasn't sure if it was mono or stereo. Good to know. It seems like most Genesis clones are mono sadly. I don't know how much difference it makes though in reality.
You have sold me! I was gonna get the Retro Trio 3 Plus, but both you and John Hancock have praised this one. Thanks for the great video! I am a fairly new subscriber and I like the content.
Thanks so much! Both are great systems and if you're looking for more than just the Genesis the Super Retro Trio Plus is the way to go. But for just Genesis/Megadrive the Gamerz Tek Mini Gen HD is really good. If you're going to order one I have a link in the description that, if you use, actually helps the channel too!!
Depends. For the money the Super Retro Trio+ is a great value but it's all 16:9. I filmed the review of the Gamerz Tek Super 2 HD and it's really good. Also if you have original hardware the HD Retrovision cables for the SNES and Genesis with an OSSC is amazing
Say I just wanted to start fresh. Or even place an Amazon order.....what is the cheapest but best way to get HDMI retro games. Basically is there an easy way hahah Sorry ...I told you I suck with this stuff hahaha
Forget HDMI because only emulators and clone systems can use it and currently no clone, system on a chip or not produces correct Genesis sound. Only a Raspberry Pi with RetroArch can do it competently well. If you want to play Genesis and SNES games with good picture quality and accurate sound, buy a real Genesis and SNES. If you do not want to lose an arm and a leg buying original cartridges then buy a SD2SNES and a SEGA Everdrive which although costly, won't be as much as buying all the real carts. The HD Retrovision cables might be pricey, but they give very sharp graphics just a tiny bit short of true RGB + SCART. Note: 4K TVs with physical component inputs are a hit and miss due to their hardware upscalers and signal range. I have tested several with the HD Retrovision and some do just Genesis or SNES buth not both with the component cables. Full HD TVs both old and new do not have that problem.
I'm actually working on a video showing the OSSC with the Genesis, SNES and Super Famicom with the HD Retrovision cable. That being said Clone systems absolutely have a place. For those looking to just enjoy their old carts or start collecting they can provide an easy and inexpensive first step back into the hobby. Is it the best experience in-terms of audio and video reproduction? Not always. But for those who are less purist and more enthusiast there's a lot of fun to be had with Clone systems.
Is the Minigen HD is definitely better than the Sega Genesis Flashback HD correct since you mentioned AT Games which you meant both consoles not just Sega Genesis Classic Game Console, correct?
Firstly, don't lump Nintendo fans in with iSheep, LOL. Second Nintendo sold nearly 50-million SNES consoles while the Genesis sold nearly 30-million. By my math, that's a victory for Nintendo?
RoXolid Productions only counting US sells i see lol ... did you know Nintendo was absolutely slammed in the UK and also the numbers for the US were very hard to VERIFY due to a lack of anyone really keeping track back then ... Sega also had a head start ....
RoXolid Productions those numbers are also a tad mental gymnastic-y because sega abandoned the genesis far earlier than nintendo abandoned the snes due to sega cd, 32x and saturn .... but while sega was laser focused on genesis sega was winning even in America
I ordered RGB cables at retrogamingcables and connect my oldschool genesis through my framemeister to a 4K TV which has less than 15ms input lag and 120hz... of course there are cheaper ways to play retro games but I hate emulation and love real hardware and cartridges...
I totally understand that, I love playing on my original hardware with my HD retrovision cables. About to be able to do that and stream, I needed the ossc, which makes it an almost $300 solution. Not everybody wants to invest that much which I totally understand, it is actually where I started back in the hobby. But I will say for the money, these are two really decent solutions
Hey, I bought one of these from Mercari, and it's really not living up to the hype. I posted some videos on my own RU-vid page... is it supposed to run Sonic 2 like that? It won't run Streets of Rage 2 at all, and I know yours did. Is my unit just borked?
I never got rid of my real Genesis. The one at the end you see me tossing off camera is the AtGames Sega Genesis Flashback HD. It does not have the AUX in/out the 32X needs so no it doesn't work with the 32X OR the Sega CD for that matter.
Lol right when I was getting ready to ask you if you were aware of the genesis mini that was announced. Will you be getting that as well to do a shootout in the future?
Hei, I am considering pulling the trigger on this one but have some questions, are sprites with the transparency/highlight effect shown correctly? Other hardware clones have issues showing them. I am thinking about Mega Turrican level 3, the fighters shadows in MK1, etc... Thanks in advancr
I'll tell you I really haven't noticed many if any issues with the way the Mini Gen HD displays graphics. I haven't played Mega Turrican but I will say Mortal Kombat looks just fine to my eyes.
Hello!Great review! You are convincing me to take this console! XD A question: is the distance between the pad inputs the same as the original MegaDrive? Thanks and keep it up!
RoXolid Productions Sorry I did not explain! I meant physical keys offline the gamepad itself, where gamepads enter! Because ATGames Sega Genesis Flashback gas a different distance, so I can't use the original "EA sporta Sega Genesis 4-Player Adapter"... Thanks! :-D
This review is weak, real questions/test would have been: Is the audio in true stereo? Does the audio sound correct? Is the video just composite to an HDMI encoder? How does the video compare to original hardware with the OSSC/Framemister or HD Retrovision or ATGames console? Is it Everdrive compatible?
This is from the more information section of the video: - While the audio sounds good it's not stereo, it is dual-channel mono I just got my OSSC, to there are more videos coming comparing this to other systems INCLUDING original hardware. I point out I don't own an Everdrive, very up front with that.
To be fair, the AtGames Genesis sucking is less a "software emulation" issue and more an AtGames issue. Their previous megadrive-on-a-chip systems are also shit. They're a lazy company. Their 2600 stuff is okay enough, but you would have to really try to fuck up 2600.
I don't know quite yet, I hae a Mega Drive game coming that I can definitely check out. I've also reached out to Gamerz Tek themselves to try to get an answer for you.
Holy crap! Sound is totally scratchy and off timing! SOR2 is one of the best sounding Genesis games so hearing that scratching messing up such great music is painful! Currently, no Genesis clone or emulator console does Genesis sound right even though the patent for the YM2612 expired already and everyone could make a physical clone of the chip which would produce *correct sound* .
This is why I reached out to the community, as a casual Genesis fan I've never actually played this game on real Hardware so I'm not sure what it should sound like. Thanks for providing the update
I’ve had this system for a few weeks and the game genie worked on my system with Shinobi III. It’s a great system and the gameplay is even better with the original SEGA controllers if you have any at home.
Hard core genesis fan: Colors are super saturated. New purplish color I've never seen. Glitch in castle of illusion as you were showing it. Sounded ok cept not stereo which makes it sound so sad
This actually has better games compatibility and the 4:3/16:9 modes. It gives the Super Retro Trio+ a serious run and, in many ways, beats it. But the value of the Super Retro Trio + is also outstanding. Both great systems for the money.
the whole reason I wanted to watch this review is to see if it is compatible with an everdrive.>> the moment you said you don't own n everdrive, I unfortunately stopped watching. :( I understand you may not LIKE the everdrive, but a lot of us do, so if you want to be a youtube reviewer, you should get one for testing purposes even if you dont like it.
Never said I don't like Everdrives. And my putting that information about the lack of Everdrive testing was to save people, like yourself, time. It's my acknowledging that I value your time and letting you know that in the beginning. One of our fundraising goals on our Patreon page is for the purchase of Everdrives, come support the channel and help us reach our goal at Patreon.com/Roxolid
RoXolid Productions Like you said, there are some hangnails. But this seems like one of the better Genesis clone systems so far. Seems like an excellent value.
"We know you can emulate, infact I've been emulating since before most of you were born... Nesticle remember Nesticle? They had Genesis too, learn your History..." Rich of ReviewTechUsa.
What the heck is the link between gamers and "Pro Wrestling"? It's like every gamer is obsessed with it. It's fake, like a soap opera for men where they prance around in spandex, it's for gay people, and did I mention it's fake? There's nothing real about it. Maybe it's wishful thinking as a lot of gamers are fat and out of shape, they're too lazy to work out or spend all their money on games so they can't go to the gym so watching wrestling is wishful thinking. Unbelievable, moving on....
I think it's a lot of the generation that is into Retro Gaming. When I was a kid wrestling was huge. I don't enjoy the current product like the older stuff but I still like going back occasionally and watching some of the older stuff from the 70s and 80s. And quite honestly those dudes are more athletic than I would ever hope to be. Yes I'm fat. Never denied that. I cracked fat jokes on myself all the time so you call me fat is not really a big deal. there was just something about wrestling back in the 80s where these guys were Larger than Life. It was also simply silly fun.
There aren't any clone systems that are hardware based that add scanlines. That's a software trick that you need some sort of software emulator to implement. Or an upscaler like a Framemeister or OSSC.
