Unfortunately this system isn't for me. I love how it looks and I like Hyperkins controllers but the systems themselves especially the NES part just aren't close enough to original hardware. Those reverse duty cycles are a big deal.
Great review. But didn't your system come with an adapter that allows the Scout controller to be plugged into the NES port? Because mine did, so I was able to play NES games right out of the box.
Good to see another review from you today. So about that audio thing you talked about with super mario land, i've actually noticed the same thing with my classiq-n standard definition model (i've actually commented on one of your earlier videos about this) Doing some research i think it has something to do with the manufacturers mixing up the resistors and the compactors on the circuit board
The Classiq HD and the RetroN HD have such similar performance it wouldn't shock me if Old Skool and Hyperkin were sourcing from the same manufacturer.
Excellent review on the system. Its definitely a shame they haven't addressed the issues from the previous consoles. Another interesting and enjoyable video review.
@@RoXolid I have issues with Genesis slot, I had to insert cartridges in a weird angle, Is it any advice you can give, my issue is not removing genesis carts, is whenever I try to insert them on the genesis slot! Thanks
Great review man! I might not purchase this one yet... maybe when the value drops off but I enjoyed watching this and it was a good, descriptive review!
After watching your review of the RetroN3 AV, I went back and watched this. I have to agree with you in that the RetroN3 HD offers more value than the AV version does. Great reviews on both and I have a Red/Black RetroN3 HD on the way. 👍👍
4:20 anything that worked with the virtual boy I think would work even better on the 3DS. You really have the same concept, its just better on the 3ds because you don't have to shove your face into it. Too bad there isn't a virtual boy emulator Homebrew for the 3ds :/
I just got the gray version of this console & mine came with as adapter for the SNES controller to use it for NES games. Maybe they just recently added this. But, Mine has it.
It is odd that you have to switch to pal so Master System games show correctly. I wonder if the My Card game F-16 would work or just a SG-1000 game. Another great video.
I owned the original Retron 3 from 2010. I was 13 at the time and it was a birthday present from my best friend, and it too used a drastically different sound font when playing the NES "Super Mario Bros." trilogy. Sadly my Retron 3 doesn't work anymore cause the by mistake I plugged in the wrong power supply, and it short circuited the console. But during the time that I did use it, I have no idea why the NES Mario games sounded so different, when other NES games I had sounded like they did on an actual NES.
Garbage. I'm not getting it. Yet another Famiclone that flips the sine wave and sawtooth waves on the NES. In what is now decades since the Yobo boxes screwed this up these "retro nostalgia" companies still completely fail to get something this simple right. Better luck next time, Hyperkin. 🙄
Another great review! Seems like it's a little worse in some areas than their previous clone systems. It's a shame that the Hyper Blaster HD doesn't work at all with the RetroN 3 HD. I look forward to your Shootout video on this and the Super Retro Trio Plus.
I don't understand how a machine 3 years newer doesn't work with a new accessory when the old version does! What did you think of the Cartridge in the shot and the quantity of games tested?
The hyper blaster really should have worked. It's disappointing that it doesn't. I think the NOAC used must be different though as Gary said the audio seemed worse. Also I know the EverDrive N8 non-PRO version works on the Retron 3 HD but not the original Retron HD so there are some minor differences.
...and you still cannot use the SNES controller while playing NES games... In which you can get the 8BitDo SN30 Bluetooth controller and the NES Bluetooth Retro Receivers...
It would be nice if these consoles had a ui that allowed you to tweak audio/speed/color. Maybe that's just beyond what they offer but it would allow us to fix the color problems and audio issues if it's just a matter of eq or color pallet.
Like the videos... however when playing Donkey Kong on the gameboy you said you never saw this level before... really? It was stage 2. DK on gameboy is not a port. Please play it past the 1st few stages. It's one of Nintendo's best games. Most people write it off as a simple port of the arcade.
@@RoXolid it changes into a whole different game after about 4-5 stages. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the finest Nintendo games. If you missed it when you were younger you won't be disappointed just give it about 15 mins and you'll be hooked.
@@CCGamesceo Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to check it out! Like I say I bought it some time ago to have for testing, and unfortunately, the last few months about the only time I get to play something is if I'm working on content! It might be a good live stream idea, thanks for the suggestion!
The console is very interesting, the only thing I don't like is the color resolution that is seen in the video, I see the colors far from the reality of the original consoles.
I did test it for little bit. yes still has the same problem with nes side which means sound off as usual and yeah Contra 3 still suffers the same problem the color pallet of the level is way off it suppose to grey color not blue and white but it doesn't end there I test the audio of the genesis side and it sounds more a like a model 2 since I heard the stereo but all sound muffled and distorted especially the rings and I did notice it at 25:59 so I did test more and yep and nes and genesis side struggles with sound. On Snes side looks decent and sound is ok not perfect except on two game contra 3 which I mention before and something that I did came cross today Super Ghouls and Ghost what happens is on some snes clones the boss at level doesn't show up because is mode 7 object and level 4 is all black because the entire background use the mode 7 you only see is the character. I hope my humble testing on the Hyperkin Retron 3 HD is useful and yeah is decent but I prefer the Super Retro Trio instated just my opinion of course ;-)
Thanks so much John, you're amazing and I appreciate your support my friend! You're in Chicago, aren't you? You should head to MGC in April and come hang out!
Electrostatic discharge… now I wonder if you live in the middle of the Navaho desert… or maybe the Egyptian desert… I've lived in _a lot_ of different climates, but never a climate like that. 🤔
I wanted to ask if you have a combined Sonic And Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Retron 3 HD? On my Retron 3 HD does not start the combined screen remains black do you have this? So the Sonic And Knuckles adapter starts and does not want to use the cartridge. Maybe the console is a problem?
@@Oleggamehacking I will have to test it out on my system later on, I'm out and about right now and like I say I just don't remember off the top of my head
In this case what do you think the best nes and snes clone is for under $100 with all issues considered? Do Tupi think for nes and snes the Retron 2 HD or retron 3 HD or a different system is better on quality and compatibility?
These clones are cheap enough to have as backups. Also, there are some people with just a handful of games from when they were young, who want to play their games on modern tv's. I think for those two purposes this is nicely priced.
N64 emulation is incredibly difficult for systems such as this. Hyperkin announced a standalone version 3 years ago now and it still has not made it to market. I don't believe you will currently find a single N64 clone system on the market that plays cartridges
@@RoXolid AH thankyou for confirming. I'm also curious about PS1 emulation. I heard you can mod a PS1 classic and install games on it but that's just over my head. I ended up going with the $60 Hyperkin Megaretron HD Gaming Console for Genesis/Mega Drive - Sega Genesis. I ALMOST got the Hyperkin RetroN 5 but decided not worth the $ (I only have GBA and Genesis games this RetroN 5 sounded interesting for it's ability to save game state)
You would figure with all the different variations of the retron clone systems, they would at least put in a little bit of effort to address the issues that have hampered the older iterations of the system. All this really comes across is a lazy cheap cash grab which is one of the reasons why I tend to avoid a lot of the clone systems to begin with. If you want people to buy your stuff, either improve from your previous concepts or don't even bother at all, so at least in a way its good we have gary to call a spade a spade when he sees things like this.
Here's the one thing I do have to give them credit for. The Retron HD was, what, $60 at launch? Now it's $30-$40. The Retron 2 HD was $60? This one is $85. The value for what you get is there to a point. And for some people they just want it to work and won't notice the audio or palette issues. I can't not see it anymore.
There's no way for the 32x to connect to the system. You need to connect an additional cable to transfer data and the Retron 3 HD doesn't have that port.
As a 20-year old man who is into retro gaming, this is the clone console I'm definitely going to purchase! However, I have a few questions: Question 1: Since I live in the UK, does the Retron 3 HD come with an adaptor for UK plugs if I buy it off Amazon UK? Question 2: Will Sega CD roms work properly when played through a flash cartridge that isn't the Mega SD? and Question 3: Is it for the best if I used a classic controller over the ones that come with the console?
Hey Ben, thanks for the questions! I'll answer the best I can: 1 - So the power is supplied via Micro USB to the system itself. Hyperkin lists on their product page that it may or may not include an AC adapter, so I'd bet the UK Version either includes the correct UK plug or omits the power supply entirely. 2) No idea, I'm not a flashcart user, sorry 3) The stock controllers are actually pretty good. I'd say there's no need to imeadiately go out and replace them, but if you'd want the original controllers will plug in without an issue. I hope this helps!
@@RoXolid Thanks for the answers! Once I have around £100 British Pounds, I think I know how I'll be playing Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games from now on...
So you can only use the controller that corresponds with the mode you're playing, and they only included 2/3 of the controllers you need? That's a little ridiculous. I mean I get that the people who would be interested in this would probably have an extra NES controller kicking about, but having a controller with matching colors would've been a nice gesture.
In truth, I probably wouldn't pick it up. Hyperkin's controllers are good, but their consoles tend to be lacking. I would love to get the red controllers though, if they ever release them for individual sale.
@@RoXolid That's definitely a damn shame. Those are probably the only things in the set that would be worth getting for me. I'd love a Cadet in that translucent red. Too bad.
I understand what you're saying, but at the same time if they produce the red and the gray versions of these oh, the versions that came with the retron 2 HD, they would have so many skus in their lineup it would be hard to manage.
I would go with the GamerzTek Super HD 2 for NES & SNES and the Hyperkin Mega Retron HD for the Genesis, at least in the budget console market. Otherwise you have things like the Analogue or the Polymega which cost more but provide a better experience.
There's a lot of hate for the Retron5 due to, IMO, irrationally. The Retron 5 stock controller IS trash, and there are some compatibility issues with some games. That being said I think the colors and sound are more authentic with the Retron 5 than the hardware-based systems Hyperkin has put out. I'd say the Retron 5 probably is the better value myself, especially since it's in sale at Castlemania Games right now for only $119! Check it out castlemaniagames.com/products/hyperkin-retron-5-retro-video-gaming-system-console-black-newest-edition?ref=RoXolid
@@RoXolid Thanks! I'm impatient and ended up buying it at like 3 am last night haha... sorry too late for the affil link, I had extra amazon credit so went that route. The NES emulation on the 3 HD really threw me off as that's what I have the most games for and collect mostly for. I actually have a small CRT, original controllers, etc...I really need to consolidate some space though. I also slept on the whole GBA era and seems like a lot of games there I'd like, basically a Super Nintendo. I don't really care if the game is emulated or not... I've finally come to terms that my snes mini looks better on flat screen than real console hooked up to a CRT... and I grew up with them all... so don't need to be a purist at this point! I do want the physical games though...so seems a good option for me. I already took my little CRT out to the garage in preparation for setting this up :D. As for lag, it's anything like the mini systems I don't see it being a problem. I loaded up mike tyson on nes mini for first time in forever and went straight through to soda popinski... never felt lag was an issue, just my skills... ok I'll stop yammering, thanks!!
@@RoXolid Impressed so far... Popped in SMB 3... the colors are much better than my NES mini classic... yikes... I mean, a good thing. Not sure if accurate, but damn if they don't look fantastic. Never seen SMB3 look so good. But the NES mini looks kind of washed out/bad now. Audio seems a bit punchier also. I had read the NES mini classic emulates better...definitely not IMO, and quite obvious.
I have a quick question maybe someone can help with , I am just getting into retro gaming and I’m looking for a system that can play NES , Genesis , and super NES like this one , I also like how I can collect cartridges instead of the games being prebuilt into the console. I’m not too picky about the technical aspects of the game and to be honest don’t understand half the stuff your talking about in terms of technical stuff, this would be more of a side hobby , collecting games and playing them when friends are over . Would you recommend this console for someone like me ? Again I’m not picky so long as most games run properly on the console
I'd say check out this video I'm going to link for you. There are 2 systems you should consider, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. But at least here you can look at each and help decide: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yGzqiVrI9Xk.html
It does play Lvl 2 of Contra 3 but my biggest gripe was that the color is way off!! Ive had that issue with almost every SNES clone console... But lucky for me i own Analogue Super NT i dont get that issue with it. Love how it even plays Super Famicom Games without any adapters.
Excellent review😉 i have a question for you... i buy 2 squire controller from amazon and i try into my retron 5. Its normal x y z doesnt work on retron 5? I return my 2 controller and my original sega 6 buttons works fine. Thx 😉
Hello there! Tell me what you need to buy a NES gamepad for the Retron 3 HD console? The fact is that I bought a wired Hyperkin Nes Black gamepad and it didn't work for me on this console. Can you advise which NES gamepad is better to use so that it works with this console?
Contact hyperkin, I've heard of that issue in the past and my understanding is it is unique to that individual controller, not a problem with the series of controllers if that makes sense. That being said, I love their wireless controller for the NES, it is how I play just about all of my NES games now
Great review as usual! Seems like Hyperkin cheaped out on some features. I've seen that the everdrive N8 now works for the 8 bit Nintendo carts now for Hyperkin. All in all its not a terrible product but they could definitely do better. I think that is what makes me feel a bit disappointed about the 3 in 1 they made.
Love the video, great review! Quick question will it play Famicom games like Goonies 1 the Japanese only release? If so I assume I need an adaptor? Thanks for your help!
I kind of got the feeling you weren't over keen on this system, the sound issues are not good either. However I do remember you playing a Mario game on the Switch and pointing out with that there were sound issues. I was a good review, I'll have to see if you ever reviewed the Retrobit Super trio plus?
@RoXolid Productions Thank you for the very thorough review. It's obvious you put a ton of time into this. Its very disappointing how Hyperkin handled this ignoring their master system issues from the mega retron. Their competitors do not have this issue. I have seen videos of both the super retro trio plus and the mini gen HD playing master system games. Then they didn't even bother to make sure their HD blaster works? Come on that's a new product. It's also a huge blemish that the NES side keeps getting progressively worse. It is also unacceptable that it did not have a way to play the NES out of the box. So you need to spend at least another $10 on a used nes controller if you don't have one. Which makes this at least $100 system which is $20 more than the super retro trio. I await your comparison video but my guess is the super retro trio is going mop the floor with this thing. I re watched your SRT+ video and your tone was far more positive in that one.
Since Master System wasn't advertised to work with it I can't hold that against them, nor should anyone. I actually thought the MegaRetron-side worked quite well myself! I hope people aren't holding it against Hyperkin that the controller stopped working. That is an ESD issue due to my room, not the system's/controller's fault!
@@RoXolid While I somewhat agree with you on the Master System side. It just seems sloppy to me considering their competitors are able to do it at a slightly cheaper price point and usually with an extra controller. I am more aggravated by all the NES issues. It just a laundry list of things that start to add up. One of these issues wouldn't bother me but there seems to be a lot. I have an original Retron 3 and I for the most part liked it. The NES side stopped working because the build is so cheap and the pins bent even when using their Retron 5 technique. The s-video through the RetroTink looked great. I like my retron 77 despite my original joystick snapping in half. I think with a little more attention to quality control Hyperkin could have great budget solutions. I don't expect fpga perfection but a little more care would go a long way.
Excellent review. I’m happy to see the cadet works for you. Hyperkin reached out to me and offered to send a replacement controller. Hoping it works and will make an updated video if so. It just seems odd because my cadet works on everything else except this console! (Original nes, retronHD, retrousb AVS and even with my mister using the blisster board). To me that sounds like a console issue and not a controller issue. But either way hopefully I just got a dud and I’m happy to hear you have it confirmed working!
I did see your video early this morning after I had finished my video. The ONLY thing I can think of is I used the Cadet included with the Retron 2 HD, and if they made any changes it might cause an issue, but I don't see why they would do that.
RoXolid Productions that’s a good theory. Mine is from the Retron HD 1. Maybe the one that came with yours is an updated revision. I’ll let you know once the new one comes in the mail.
RoXolid Productions I bet it’s a console issue. Maybe defective ports. It doesn’t work in either player 1 or 2. I may take down my video if it’s working for everyone else. Don’t want to spread fake news!
@@mike7599 I wouldn't, but what I would do is keep a pinned post and update it with how the situation is going. This is why I kept in my issue with the ESD shock (that hurt like a MoFo!). This was not a failure from Hyperkin, and it is something I can show how Hyperkin addresses issues like this and takes care of customers. You can do the same thing, if that makes sense. it's ok if something fails from a company, it gives them a chance to make it right. And if/when they do send you a replacement, do a video as a follow-up. That lets you show others how you were taken care of.
@@RoXolid yea plus i'm kind of overloaded with hyperkin clones lol...they mega retron, supa retron hd, and the retron 5...plus original snes/genesis, etc...
@@RoXolid regardless you had an excellent review and appreciate all you do man. Also when the n64 hyperkin clone comes out that will be a day 1 purchase for me
I don't have one to test but I'm pretty certain Battletoads would not lock up on the NT Mini as it's a highly accurate FPGA. I've also never had such issues with the RetroUSB AVS. Those two systems are honestly the best 2 "clone" NES consoles and the only ones I could truly recommend especially for HDMI.
Just get an original system to play retro games. These clones cannot for some reason get the emulation correct. Games freeze up, poor quality color production, awful sound reproduction. Spare yourself and pass on these clones.
How would you review a system outside if playing games on it? The beauty of video is you can fast forward or rewind through out to content you would prefer to see. And I did use the original hyperkin controllers to start, and tested other controllers later.
So how would you change this? Game compatibility is a big concern with clone systems, so I tested games people asked to see in a post prior to filming this, that's why so many titles are featured, they were requested. So seriously, what would you like to see? I'm genuinely curious
@@RoXolid The thing is that the title of the video is = Should You Buy the Hyperkin Retron 3 HD NES, Super Nintendo, Super Famicom, & Genesis HDMI Clone? So i would expect to not see gameplay but more know if the price is worth it , if its well made , if its compatible , how are the controllers , how are the graphics , how is the sound and such things. Not see you play games with it. We all know it will play games... Yes some might not work but you did not have to play them for this. You do whatever you want but if i wanted to see gameplay i would go watch a video with gameplay in the title. You play some games and talk about different versions of the games and other things that has nothing to do with should we buy a clone or not. You could have cut the 30 first minutes and it would have been better with the title u put there. i dont want to watch you play half an hour to finally really know if its worth it or not by watching the last part of the video. Compare the original systems with the clone would be interesting also. I know the clone has some issues.
Software emulators rely on downloaded/pirated/stolen software. They also don't let you play your physical collection. Clone consoles ate far from useless
@@RoXolid Software emulators superior clone consoles in terms of accuracy so clone consoles are not enough good at this point right now so we have to wait for a while, but yes you right in terms of aesthetics and ability of reading physical cartridges clone consoles are always better - it is obvious!
@@RoXolid Yes I understand why you telling it to me but those ROMs are the same as payed to me. I mean it does not matter because it is abandonware anyway.
Super Mario Bros is not Abandonware! Neither is Sonic, Star Fox, Wonder Boy, Kirby, and others. Why I keep mentioning that is because that overrides ANY rationale for using illegally downloaded ROMs!
I'm so sad that the snes generation has a lot of flashing lights, awful, it can cause seizures. I want to get the system but I won't get it for this reason.
But that has nothing to do with the hardware though, that's the software. And pretty much any video game is going to have some sort of flashing lights. I know one fan of my channel has to look away when I post video showing f zero from the GameCube because he suffers from seizures.
This is literally one of those Chinese SCART to HDMI adapters in a different shape, not the RCA Input ones , the SCART ones ...but they only accept COMPOSITE via scart ! They actually do an awesome job! I could hack one open right now and connect a Nintendo connector to it lol Maybe I will You have to convert any system to its best output then upscale that. Only way to go. RGBS to HDMI for most. VGA to HDMI for the Dreamcast etc etc
