Studded snows and large lug tires are what one needs. I have driven a Camaro (mid eighties) stick Z28 in inches of snow in central NY. Tires, tires, tires. You can go anywhere with the right tires.

I remember freaking out about driving my Charger in the winter when I got it. But realized it really boils down to going easy on the throttle to prevent spin. But if you're parked in a driveway with a foot of snow; yeah you're f*cked.

Completely disagree with you! It's only a matter of tires. I drove my 1987 corvette for a whole winter (canadian!) Never had any problems! BUT I had excellent winter tires! I now have a "amazing" -_- toyota echo. First car with studded winter tires(nokian hakkapeliitta): OMG! The car feels like an awd! ...tires tires tires!

People act like it's impossible or so unsafe. They say FWD or AWD or stay home. Naw man. Not everyone can afford two cars. My first car was a Mazda B3000 (1995 Ford Ranger made in Japan). I live in Utah. RWD, all the weight in the front, leaf springs in the back. I never even put extra weight on my rear wheels. As long you pay attention to what your doing and drive like it's winter, you'll be safe and just fine. The driver and tires come first when it comes to snow or rain; Be attentive and be safe.

It's so great to hear someone else say practice drifting. I've been saying that for years, because people shouldn't rely on driver or motorcycle stability systems, and must master their vehicle, so they can avoid accidents, and recover from random slides. Even better then playing with your vehicle in open space, is tuning it's supension and brakebias, to be just right for you.

With a summer tire you aren't even suppose to have them on the road if the temperature is below 45 F. The rubber compound is different than what is used on an all season and winter tire.

Originally from north central Michigan but have lived from Detroit to the UP. My first car, a 1959 Desoto with a 361 engine. Was a two door hardtop with swingout front seats. Could not afford snow tires but did have sand in the trunk much of the time. Had a 69 Camaro rs with 350 when our oldest children were little. No snow tires. Drove rwd cars until fwd finally came out. In '92 my job took me to the UP. Had 7 offices spread across the entire UP. For a number of years I drove a 2wd Ford Ranger pkup. Put weight in the back and good tires on it. Never failed to reach an office due to snow. Now have an 05 Grand Prix GXP, a Chevy pkup 4wd, and a 2014 Charger rt awd. Never felt handicapped driving any of the vehicles. Tires do make a major difference.

Great video. My SRT charger is my daily in rural Canada (on the prairies) and I love it. I’ve only been stuck one time in the last 5 years or so. I feel like you just need to be patient and use your momentum when getting moving. Winter tires are an absolute must and I’ve never had to add any weight in the trunk because I disagree with upsetting the moment of inertia of the car. The traction control on these cars works very well but I still completely disable it every time before I drive by pressing and holding the ESP button down for 10 seconds. I’d prefer a RWD layout over FWD because I almost never experience understeer in the charger and when I do, resting my foot on the skinny pedal quickly takes care of that 😂. The handling of these cars is on-point in snow and ice and the large size of the car makes them easy to control in the hands of an experienced driver.
@michaelz5692

Awesome video. May i suggest to just keep these in the trunk: shovel, kitty litter or salt or sand or traction aids and you're good. For better traction you can always stud your tires with studs from amazon. Cheaper to buy online and install yourself. They sell screw in studs. Keep up the great work on your channel! CHEERS!

@aleksandrnestrato
@aleksandrnestrato 2 года назад
All you need for snowy winters is dedicated winter tires. Better -if your state’s law allows that- with studs. You just swap the whole set of tires back and forth twice a year. The signal to change tires is the temperature. When in the end of fall or in the beginning of the winter daily temperatures hold sustainably at 40°F swap your summer set for your winter set. When the spring approaches and it gets warmer and sustainable daily temperatures rise just a hair above 45°, install summer tires back. Remember one simple thing: It’s not the tread pattern that turns a tire into the winter one, it’s the rubber itself. Summer tires are much stiffer in order to hold together in high temperatures rather than melt. Thus summer tires in low temperatures are extremely hard, they just cannot grab the road. Winter tires’ compound is very soft in order to compensate for that temperature shift. About 70% to 80% is the rubber elasticity, about 30% or 20% is the tread pattern that grips. All season tires are bad both in winter and summer. They act in severely different conditions, so they are a huge compromise. Knowing that beware of big trucks. They have all seasons for sure. ‘Cause if a truck has like 18 wheels, no one will buy 18 more tires for the winter. Especially taking into account how expensive a truck tire is. Thus trucks on snow/ice are extremely dangerous, hold yourself on a distance from them.

R W D put weight on trunk. To keep tires down. Second never drive in overdrive that's all cars in snow you go into overdrive to fast it causes wheel spin also doesn't down shift as well helping car slow down . Ime a road driver with over a million miles I drive cars and trucks of all types front rear wheel drive types ime the only driver that completes his route no matter the weather. From the mountains to the flat ground. Out in morning back by night. I use my first and second gears for stopping and controlled starts. Try it it works on all types.

Up until the 1980's or so...EVERYONE daily drove a rwd car, and AWD was virtually unknown, and Jeeps and other 4X4 vehicles were seen more as off-roaders than dailies. It's all about 2 things..tires and driver skill. Winter tire tech is great these days, and even RWD cars have the advantage of anti-lock brakes and stability control that your parents and grandparents likely didnt have. Just put on winter tires, practice in an empty parking lot in the snow and above all..take it easy..and you'll be fine.

"It's RWD, so all the weight's at the front of the car" - that ... doesn't make sense ... it's FWD that are nose-heavy, which is what gives them better grip off the line but tragic handling everywhere else The only advice anyone needs is to get the best tires they can afford, drive for the conditions, and be smooth with their inputs

What? wow! I never knew that. I was beginning to think that you all had Subarus. So basically you just use winter tires? Everyone owns two sets of tires?

You know how to spot a car youtuber under 30? They think you driving RWD cars in the winter is a death sentence. Guess what... RWD is ALL WE HAD FOR DECADES! Your main problem is you seem to have no clue how to drive in the winter.
