You can do PhD after 4 year bachelors degree for example in the IIM. They will need good grades and also the CAT exam scores. Each iit has its own PhD admission information which you can find in the web page. Typically GATE is not needed for PhD admissions but a good score can boost the candidate. But admission criteria are different for masters and bachelors students and vary among the iits. Some iits need gate from b.tech students and some do not need gate if the student is from certain institutes like iits with a high Gpa. You need to check where you are applying. But in my opinion, gate is a good revision on the coursework and does help the student in fixing his or her fundamentals. @@Drganguli sir I don't have much time to prepare for gate itself although 2 research internship and a research journal paper along with LOR from faculty would work?( For direct phd in iits or nits. I am from tier 3 college not so esteemed though)

In India they use exams and interviews for admission to PhD. Letters of recommendation are typically used abroad. You should ask the specific iit professor as to what you should do to get in at that institute. Don’t rule out masters degrees.
There are many universities and colleges giving online PhD in some areas. You need to go through their web page carefully and do research on the programs. Yes it is possible. PhD is like a job where you typically help a professor do research and do you are paid a stipend. Some other tests or an interview may be needed in most cases though.
