This time around we set out to do something a little controversial. I’ve never tried bass and had to give it a shot. Don't worry I ate the smallest bass I could possibly catch. Let me know in the comments section down below.

why would people not like you eating bass? Iv never heard of that before. Our local ponds stock the water with bass intentionally for fishing purposes. Bass as a freshwater fish is bland agreed, which is why you salt and season it with lemon or whatever the same as you did your mackerel. Those of us who are landlocked enjoy our bass. :D
@MainelyOutDoors
@MainelyOutDoors 5 лет назад
Some people believe (quite strongly) that it should only be a sports fish. Under the impression that people who eat bass are going to decrease there chances of catching a larger bass in those waters.
@ophiuchusoversoul1785

omgoodness,,, I thought that was the entire reason they have weight or length restrictions that change seasonally. During breeding season they restrict fish keeps to under a certain length to ensure the breeding population is not affected, and during non-breeding season, only larger fish can be kept to ensure the next generation is not degraded.

I've eaten bass for a while now. He's right that it tastes bland without any sort of flavor added to it. But then again most fish are like that, except for salmon, tuna, parrot fish, etc. that has some "innate flavor" to it. Just my opinion. When I go out bass fishing, I never forget my 'seafood flavoring' powder on hand. It is a mixture of sea salt, garlic, red pepper, paprika, celery, and ginger. The bland fish meat really tastes good with it.

Then when I grew up my friends and I lived together and ate bass trout and crappie almost everyday. And would go hunt rattlesnake and grey squirrel in our backyard and the forest. We lived in the San Bernardino mountains and always had food. A tomato plant and peppers and all we really needed to buy was weed beer and potatoes. 😂😂 But twice a year we grew our own weed also! 😜🤣🤭😜🤣

Just ate my first bass yesterday - I found it delicious! Pulled it through the ice on a small pond in VT - so maybe that all helped the taste? Salt pepper and flour coated it and cooked in a tbs of butter on medium/low for 3 minutes a side. I've never heard of it being frowned upon to eat bass. Granted im in Northern Ontario, but bass, pike and walleye are by far the most common on the small inland lakes and rivers, and all are great. Most people throw back bass and pike due to preference, and are kind of walleye snobs, but they're all good (I'll argue pike is the best)

I’m from northwest Indiana and up here we do fish for Large Mouth for the sport but if you keep a couple of the smaller ones I’d say 10-12 inch ones are really good flavor very similar to Bluegills and are a great way to increase your meals if you want. We clean them and freeze them in freezer bags or food saver bags with 2-4 filets of Bass and 6-8 filets of Bluegill to one bag for a mean for 2 Adults but if you have a smaller child that would still be good I’m sure. But I definitely prefer to eat Bluegills, Crappie, Perch, Walleye, or evening Rock Bass are good too. Also Northern Pike are good eating too. Just gotta know how to cut out all those damn “Y” bones out of the filets and they’re good for a fish fry or even pickled fish.. that’s how we do the bigger ones anyway. I don’t eat much catfish.. but we have have lots of Skamania and Steelheads and the bigger Trout also great for smoking fish. The smaller creek trout 9-12” are a favorite to eat fried but you don’t find them often just in the creeks around spring when the season opens. The Lake Michigan fish usually have a warning on how much or how often you should eat them.

Also, if someone did really like to eat them there are a number of ponds where they've been illegally introduced and as such are unregulated, meaning it's expected you'd kill the ones you catch.

Do ike jime (brain spike) and cut open the main artery behind the gills to bleed it out IMMEDIATELY if you keep it to eat, I promise it will taste better, or just clean the fish immediately. When you let any fish simply suffocate to death they excersize chemicals into the flesh that will give it a fishy, muddy taste, and it makes space in the meat for bacteria to grow, resulting in the fish rotting faster. There are videos on how to perform ike jime and the reason for doing it.

As with any fish, it has more to do with the water it came out of than anything. Mullet caught out in the ocean, or in a clear, ocean run stream are excellent, but from dirty warm water they are awful. Bass from a cold clear lake or stream is great, but from a warm mud hole it will be taste muddy.

I have never eaten largemouth bass but smallmouth bass are delicious if they are caught in clean water. SMBs taste like the water they live in. A bass from the Rapid or Magalloway rivers is as good as any white meat fish. A bass from Hermon Pond wont be as good.

@zone4garlicfarm
@zone4garlicfarm 5 лет назад
@@fedupwithem6208 Bass were illegally introduced into Umbagog Lake in the mid 1980s. They have migrated upstream into the Rapid, Magalloway, Swift Diamond, Dead Diamond and Dead Cambridge rivers. They have also invaded Mollidgewock and Sturtevant ponds. There is a limit of 2 bass on Umbagog Lake because New Hampshire wants to promote them. There is no size or bag limit in any of the Maine tributaries. if you fish those waters please kill every bass that you catch to protect the salmon and native brook trout fisheries. More recently, northern pike have been introduced to Umbagog. If they got into the tributaries it will decimate the trout and salmon fisheries. If you fish anywhere in Maine kill all pike.

From NH here. After spending $40 or so dollars on live bait trying to catch landlocked salmon over the course of a weekend my brother landed a giant bass, largemouth. He said f it. Spent enough money and wasn’t going home empty handed. He took it home and ate it. Said it was delicious. I really think bass are invasive to the north east. They’re not even sporty. They’ll bite literally anything and are practically everywhere. Trout have all but disappeared.

Here in Washington state, bass are not stocked in our lakes which means they are left to populate on their own. So it's not necessarily how bass tastes that deters many people from eating it, it's overfishing that seems to be the worry. Many people I have talked to who have eaten bass say it tastes "muddy". Which is weird because I LOVE a good pan fried bass fillet every now and then. Some bread crumbs, salt, pepper, garlic and lemon.. Mmm!! Here, Trout are apparently the fish of choice for some reason. 🤮 No stank you.

no there is actually no length limit in Maine (those who see this in the future make sure you check because it can change from year to year) Right now general law in the Southern zone is 2 fish any size only one over 14 inches. While the north is no bag or length limits.
