I'm 53 and about to start a bachelor's degree. I think that a lot of people who mock and say "midlife crisis" are just threatened by your energy, your love for learning and maybe...just maybe....they fear they will be left behind! Or they wish they were doing what you're doing.
Don't worry too much about the "comments" that people make about your degree pursuit. I'm 53 and am seven courses away from a master's degree in cybersecurity. I started in my late 40s with no degree but the real-life experience you have will translate and can make a difference. I still get snide comments about "going to school" but I think that many people forget that the learning process never stops, for most, and they are not in your shoes. Anyways keep pushing forward!
When I was 28yrs old, I attempted to go back to school but my mental health was really bad and I couldnt even finish the first semester. I ended up living on the streets for the next 2 years. I finally got housed in 2016 but It wasnt until 2017 that I stopped living in denial and started getting mental health treatment for moderate Schizophrenia. Been rebuilding my life little by little in my early 30s. Im 35 now and starting to dream about going back to school again. However, I have a few financial milestones that I need to get to first. Im hoping to have a good foundation in place by the time I turn 40.
I really needed to hear this. I will be 50 in January and going for my Bachelor degree in engineering. What scares me and what scared me the first time was the math. I want to build things so I have to get through the math. Thanks again
Hi In closet since! I gave you a thumbs up because I believe it's a supportive view you're expressing. Even so, in my own experience "studying", in and of itself does not invest one with credibility among the general population, one's social or professional contemporaries, or even one's own self, it seems to me. Returning to school implies something needed or desired beyond the fundamental reward of studying for its own sake, I would say.

Thank you for doing this video. It can be hard as I just finished my first year of divinity school for my MA. When I got my MBA in my mid-twenties, it was a lot different from doing this in my fifties. However, you are spot on about the learning piece, and I can offer more depth to the classroom discussion. Initially, I had to push through the imposter syndrome, but once I could do so, I found myself learning and contributing.
I'm 52 and decided to complete my BA in accounting. I have been working as a bookkeeper for 22 years and now I feel my wages are capped because I don't have that BA. I was pleasantly surprised how many credits from military and associates degree transferred. So glad I am taking this time for me!
When I was in my 20’s and 30’s I did not stay in school and did not listen to my family or people around me now unfortunately I have to go back to school so I can do my own art business!
I'm 49, my husband decided not to support our family, I'm now divorced 9 yrs, my Dad died and left me half as much money as I was banking on (probably because I got divorced), and so now, the rug ripped out from under me, I need to figure out a way to support myself until retirement. SHould I go back to college? I don't have any degrees or diplomas, just high school, I don't know if I could do it, all that studying and homework. But I don't want to earn minimum wage the rest of my working life either, cleaning toilets and ringing in people's groceries. I'm scared.

Thank You for this great video , it makes me feel so much better about this choice i have made to go back cause as of August 23 2021 i will be starting my 1st class at the University of Houston Downtown and i trying to get my BA in History with my teaching cert so, its been alot on my mind as the days pass but after watching your video i am feeling better that i made this step at this time of my life .
