👩🏻‍🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are RU-vid, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s RU-vid channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her RU-vid channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Out of curiosity how many of you repot the minute a plant makes it home and how many of you wait? What is the reasoning behind it?
@MushroomMagpie
@MushroomMagpie Год назад
The transition from a Home Depot or Walmart to my house is generally a vast improvement that they easily get used to. I feel they want new and better soil right away, but it happens once I eventually get around to it. Sometimes never...
@kendravoracek3636

I do because sometimes plants have netting around them or metal pieces, keeping them together and sometimes I don't like the soil they're in

I repot immediately. I also water on a weekly schedule *gasps* - my potting media ratios allow me to balance hydration and airflow in the media and water on my schedule. I have tried not repotting plants and tend to lose more of them that way than if I just get them into my own conditions.

Great information. I’ve lost so many houseplants that way. This last time, I waited as you stated and allowed the plant to dictate WHEN TO TRANSPLANT.

Glad it was helpful!
@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951
How true that is. It might be a cutting. Usually if I see roots coming out of the pot, then safe to repot. If I get them in the mail, I wait 48 hours before repotting. To me it gives the plant time to adjust from the travel in the mail. One can also take the plant out of the pot and see if there is a root mass without disturbing the plant roots and then put back in if not a lot of roots.

I've always repotted within a day or so of buying a new plant. I've really never had a problem with that. Usually the soil that the plant came in has never been good so I'm more comfortable repotting it. I have never lost a plant doing this (maybe I've just been lucky, but I've been growing plants for 50 years now) My orchids, especially, get repotted the same day I bring them home. Thanks for all your valuable content. I do find it very helpful, but I will probably continue to repot any new plant as I've always done since it seems to work for me.
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada Год назад
That is fair. Are you doing it to change the medium out? For example you do not like orchid is moss so you change to bark? or are you doing for pest management.
@gabrieleweidhuner5727
@gabrieleweidhuner5727 Год назад
@@GardeningInCanada I do it to change the medium. Moss & I don't get along so I soak it in calmag & seaweed & then switch to bark. I've only ever left 2 orchids in the medium they came in (as advised by the nursery) & both died. I haven't really had too many pest problems. ( of course I have had some- we all do- but none seem to have come home with pests)

I've always waited to let the plant acclimate to my home. Honestly, it might stay in that pot for years if it's doing well and a slow grower.

I used to repot fairly early on, then I learned the hard way not to. Now I wait at least a month to see how the plant is doing, most I have left for a while depending on the growth rate I see. I recently repotted some I have had for about a year into bigger pots with fresh soil and they are having tantrums about it. Others are loving the fresh soil.

I tend to leave newbies in their pots, unless the roots are growing out of the bottom of the container. I have watched employees at certain stores manhandle plants and drown them. Some of the customers care little as well. It is apparent how they are treated by seeing how many carts of discount plants they have on sale. So I bide my time for one or two months before stressing the plant again.

Depends on the soil medium… if I don’t like it I repot it. Bought a raven zz which was planted in straight coco coir and needless to say I lost half the plant because I don’t do well with straight soils. When I make the soil my way I can work with it much better and know what to expect. I figure it’s stressed anyways so get it over with yet also find I have much less loss this way.
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada Год назад
That is actually a really great point Frank! If the medium does not suit your watering style it is going to be key to change it out.

Great tips! I just rescued a sad thanksgiving cactus from crappy tire. I needed some TLC right away so I gave it an IPM foliar and repotted (I think it was being overwatered). Already seems better and blooming. But I think it's totally a case by case basis on repotting.

Lol, by what sign do you replant, I thought you meant what astrological sign do you replant in... I think a waxing moon in Taurus is generally good, but that can depend a bit on which house the moon is in.

I used to depending if it looked root bound or not. If not and looking healthy, let it be for a while to feel hapoy at new home. But.... Because in Reality, I am an irresponsible Plant Momma, I have come to appreciate that plants actually follow the philosophy so eloquently uttered by one Dr. Ian Malcolm aka Jeff Goldblum. 😉... "Life Will Find a Way." I know this to be true because I am shamefully neglectful to my plants in or out, and yet, a little TLC - generally aka 'add water' ... lol They'll bounce back from damn near stone dead. Probably not for super delicate tropical subzero climates, but most plants will try and figure out how to live right til the bitter end, great news for those of us who are less fussy in our approach to such things nowadays. 👍

Question using distilled vinegar for pH down, some people say it’s bad but some people say it’s no bother then synthetic pH down, apparently it has manganese in the distilled vinegar as well just would like your opinion on this,thanks 🙏🙏
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada Год назад
Anytime liquid or temporary to decrease or increase ph doesn’t work because once you add water it’s diluted. Ideally you would add lime or sulphur to adjust accordingly
