Just a video detailing why I love DOOM64 and why I overlooked it for over a decade because I thought it was just a port. It's like the long lost doom game I always wanted. Do you enjoy DOOM64???
Doom 64 actually does have a level select, though you must unlock it by beating the super secret level Hectic, accessed from MAP01. The level select even gives you access to a set of levels not encountered during the campaign!
While I feel slightly embarrassed for not knowing that , I still gotta say big thanks for that USEFUL information!!! I pinned the comment for awareness since I was none the wiser 😂🤣😂😅😂😅 appreciate it bruv!
@@maltsutty There's also a console command, map xx (the two-digit map number) that will get you to any map without losing your inventory. Edit: corrected the command to change levels
@@maltsutty To be fair, the way to access Hectic is actually pretty obscure. You have to blow up all of the barrels in map01 which then open a timed door at the start of the map, meaning you have to save one of the barrels there for last or else you miss your chance. Hectic does reward you by giving you early access to the rocket launcher though.
I’m always at a stand still when trying to pick a favourite. DOOM64 really does set itself apart and have its own dark&colourful style goin on. Gameplay is top tier as well! I just wished they called it DOOM2.5 instead lol
@@maltsutty good old Nintendo.. 64 on everything, even if it killed the sales. Well.. Doom Eternal and the 64 rerelease fixed the continuity so it's all good.
I played the PC port of Doom 64 earlier this year. As a long-time fan of the classic games, I would say yes. 64 has excellent map design, a creepy atmosphere and well-placed events.
Some of those events really surprised me !! Like more so than your average monster closet does lol. Loved seein levels transform and other weirdness (those walls closing in on you was trippy🤪). Thanks for commenting bruv !🤘🔥🙏🙏💯
I also played it for the first time this year on the PS5!!! I’m so glad they decided to rerelease it after all these years , really makes me wanna see a new official doom game using sprites again!
I never heard of Doom 64. We had Doom on the PC, 32x and the PS1. I played the PS1 versions the most. Thanks for the review, makes me want to play it right away!!! Cause it instantly reminds me of the PS1 ports. 😁
If you liked the PS1 port I have a feeling you’ll love this game. It totally embodies that 5th gen console feel ! And if you’ve never seen or heard about it then everything will feel extremely fresh ! I was pleasantly surprised every time I played it !! 💪✅🔥 thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate you 🙏🙏
@@maltsutty in 1997 it was a excellent game. It pushed the limits of sprite graphics to the edge. Is not a ID game, is a Midway game, so the graphics made sense after games like MK, Crusing U.S.A or any other digitalized graphics game. Sadly was an N64 exclusive, and those players prefered Golden Eye, Tukok or Perfect dark, three games that aged horrible.
I beat it on 64 when it came out. and I knew it was it's own game all the way up till now. guess that makes me a minority! Yay! 😁 I think I was 14 then
You can't review Doom 64 like it's a PC game. It's a game designed to be played on the mind fuck of a controller that Nintendo designed. If someone handed you an N64 controller and said "We want you to make a Doom game for this." Any normal person would laugh at think you were joking. Midway did a fucking phenomenal job transforming Doom into a completely unique and honestly groundbreaking console game. The cuts they made to enemies were not just due to cart space, it was also the fact that fighting revenants and arch viles with an N64 controller would have made the game awful, and they probably would have had to limit those enemies to a handful of appearances, which would kind of just be a waste. Logical cuts are the best kind of cuts. Also the reason a lot of animation frames are missing, and sounds are re-used, sprites re-used, etc. because of cart space. When you play the re-release it's often hard to remember that the game was designed to be played on that abysmal controller at 25 FPS or w/e it was. They did a genius job twisting the graphics and atmosphere of the game to compensate for the shorter maps and less combat variety. That being said, playing D64 on the N64 is a supremely challenging experience, especially on Watch Me Die. Easily my favorite Doom title to date. Also can't do a D64 review without mentioning Aubrey Hodges horrifying soundtrack.
Bruv thanks for the comment these kind are my favourite to read and upon reflection you are correct - my outlook would definitely be different had I played it on the actual N64. Ya that controller was too wacky for my taste lol also ya I can appreciate logical cuts they were definitely smart about it in the changes they made to accommodate the console experience. Man I just wish I KNEW it wasn’t a straight port when I had my 64!!! I legit thought “oh I got doom on pc nothing to see here” and I must’ve been a naive child lol Once again appreciate the view and comment friend 👍🤘🙏
I really like DOOM64 so far, just been playing it for the first time on Nintendo switch! The Imps look way better than the brutes in the original. But why in the hell did they make the Cacodemons brown with T-Rex like arms? And the sound when they die is changed… that was great. The Pain Elementals look evol, so that kinda makes up for it. Hell knights and Mancubus are worse but the arachnotron looks better! Seems like it’s a bit hit and miss some of the redesigned demons/monsters. Pinkie demons look very demonic lol so that’s cool. Glad they kept their dying snarl sound, it’s weirdly satisfying.😅😅
Lol I know what you mean about that snarl it’s like an audio reward after dealing with them 😂 also totally agree about the arachnotrons they look awesome and I love the blue plasma they shoot it looks somehow more intense than the green of the classics. And don’t even get me started on the trex arm 😆😆 thanks for watching and commenting bruv
Console Doom (PSX and Doom 64 respectively) are where I cut my teeth on Doom, and kicked off my decades long love affair with the series. Over the years I naturally drifted over to the PC side to get my classic Doom fix. I lamented for years that Doom 64 was trapped on console, and was elated when I heard it was finally getting an updated PC port. For my money Doom 64 on PC is my absolute favorite classic Doom to play. As you said Midway went above and beyond when creating it, and it truly is something special.
Oh for sure , they made changes that were necessary to make it feel like a new unique doom experience! And it definitely did 💪💪💯 everytime I play DOOM64 I metaphorically kick my own ass for NOT getting doom64 on my n64 as a kid 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️😂😂😂 thanks for watching and appreciate the comment brother💯🙏🤘💪
One thing I'll say is that it seems you're playing on easy difficulty. Most people play this game on easy by mistake, thinking they're playing on normal because of what's selected by default on the New Game menu. It's understandable, because in Doom 1 and 2, the 5 skill levels in order are as follows: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard. The normal skill is selected by default. Doom 64 on the other hand has 4 skill levels: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard. Thing is, the Easy skill is selected by default. No idea why they changed what's the default, since the only change there is the removal of the Very Hard skill level. This likely happened due to memory constraints when it came out on N64. Very Hard has extra aggressive, respawning monsters, faster enemy projectiles, and turbo Pinkies and Spectres.
I’d love to say I only play on easy for capturing specific footage but tbh I screw around on all the difficulties while admittedly never being great at the hard and very hard difficulties so that’s why there’s no footage of that . It blows me away watching ppl’s playthroughs on very hard and nightmare of the classic doom games (and 64) hell I get anxious just seein those pinkies move faster 🤣😂🤣😂 thanks for watching brother👏
In my experience, Doom 64 looks contrary to how you depict it, Doom 2 is vibrant and 64 is kinda murky. Same platform, PC Windows, GZ Doom port and Steam release of 64
The footage I have is all from the PS4 versions running and recorddd on the ps5 so it may look different but I love the variety of colours in 64 even if it is darker/murkier than 2. I actually only got to try the doom64 mod of DOOM2 and never the official steam release😱😓
I played the version on Switch and it felt great. The motion aiming, even if it's limited to one axis, is second best only to mouse and keyboard. I'm glad I missed it on N64, as I heard it was actually pretty bad to play in its original form with that weird-ass boomerang controller.
I’m beginning to try motion aiming on ps5 too, it’s very fun for that extra bit of precision! And lol ya that N64 controller would’ve been awkward although watching CRT footage of the N64 version I’m surprised how well it ran on the hardware !
Like final fantasy 7??? That would actually be super interesting to see how they would approach that design wise , and I agree they got textbook remasters💪🔥
@@maltsutty I can only speak for myself, but I would like to see a Final Fantasy remaster where the only thing done is a graphical update, not a "reimagining" of the game. Updating the overworld, and dungeon, character models so they look like the combat character models. And just polish the backgrounds so they look crisp and clean while also adjusting the controls so that movement does not feel as cumbersome. I know a lot of people love the Final Fantasy 7 remake square released. But for me it does not feel like a final fantasy game, let alone one of the flagship titles in the series. There is so much filler in the ff7 remake that the essence, or soul, of the game was lost. They gave ff7 the Hobbit treatment and added so much filler in order to stretch the game over 2 or 3 releases. It reminds me of the grandfather axe paradox; how many changes can be made before it is no longer the same game? It feels like ff7 characters are having a spinoff with kingdom hearts.
@@Onering80 Yes, I absolutely agree. For some reason, dev studios just can't help themselves from changing all sorts of shit when they 'remake' a game, and that's usually upsetting to fans. But devs just keep doing it. "Okay, so we're working on a remake of *classic game*" "YES!" "But we're changing this and this and this." "OMG, just remake the fucking game as it was and just improve the graphics. That's all we want." "Got it! We totally hear you and we appreciate your feedback! So anyways, we're also changing this and this and this and this...."
@@DeadPixel1105 exactly. Instead of asking gamers what we want, they tell us what we want. Then they get mad because we didn't buy it. They have taken the playbook of a sleazy used car salesman and proceed to peddle lemons.
I'm one of the few and the proud that first experienced Doom 64 on the original N64 hardware, back in 1997. I loved Doom 64 back then, but I like the modern PC remaster even more. Higher resolutions, crisper graphics, and you get to use mouse and keyboard rather than that goddamn N64 controller. It's a much better experience.
About that shotgun lacking an animation... What I've always done is I just pretend that it's a lever-action shotgun. If you pretend it's a lever-action shotgun, then the 'animation' works. But I have nothing helpful to offer regarding the Super Shotgun, which also lacks a reload animation. That just makes no sense, any way you try to rationalize it lol
9:01 This gameplay footage.... What the hell are you doing bro? You're maxed out with rocket ammunition. Just pull out the goddamn rocket launcher and get rid of those Barons quick and easy. What the hell man lol
Played Doom 64 on the 64, but i remember it being really dark, and never getting that far. Can't really remember why though maybe password system?? My brother loved it though. Also, hexen on 64 was awesome!!
Late reply but thank you for the correction! I must’ve gotten mixed up in my research 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ also thanks for watching bruv it’s much appreciated and my latest videos are always my best ones since I’m always learning 💪💯✅🙏🤘
Kex has no effect on if freelook could be added, given the port doesn't change how Doom64 functions or is rendered. The game just straight up wasn't designed for it, the sky's don't pitch and the map designs themselves hide limitations beyond where you can look. Being able to pitch the camera would expose these flaws or potentially introduce sequence breaks.
Yes, you should, I played it on PC about a year and a half ago as part of my personal boomer-shooter renaissance. So much fun, they should have called it Doom 2.5 and released it on all the consoles at the time. The level near the end, where it's in the open with Cacodemons descending on you, totally kicked my arse but was all the more satisfying when I finally managed to save-scum my way through it.
I wish they named it 2.5!!!! It would thematically and numerical sequel-y sense ! Also many people would’ve tried due to not thinking it was a port ! I like the way you think!🙏💪✅
I was very surprised that a lot of gamers who liked doom didn't really know about the N64 version until the new doom games came out and that when it seems to take some notice. To me this IS doom at is best on a visual level boy this would look good with a remake from the ground up along with the classic. i would of bought this if they added proper mouse look up and down as a option and if they made better modern textures on a visual level. But as it stand they done a good job porting it over to pc but a very bad job as a remaster on a visual leveI. I guess they wanted to keep it to its original look rather than making it look better with new modern look but with the same art style as that is what i expected it to be when they first announced a remaster of this game how disappointed i was just another big miss opportunity.
i missed out on lots of games over the past 2 decades. i only played doom 3 a little bit it was a bit scary. maybe i should get all these doom games on a steam sale someday and try them out.
Lots of comments telling me to do this , and so help me GOD I will be doing this , thanks for the suggestion . Question though - are you playing a modded doom64 or a DOOM2 mod/wad that is the “brutal” version of a doom64 themed conversion of DOOM2 ? I hope that makes sense lol I play a lot of mods and wads but somehow never got this one working !🤦♂️🤔🤔🤔😓
I played this game from day one when it came out why i bought the N64 just for this game. I saw a magazine for the N64 doom and it had the center page as the full article full of pictures for it i was so impressed i study the pictures read it over and over and kept on looking through other magazine all about this game. So that's when a bought the N64 eagerly waiting to play this game on day one and i wasn't disappointed. Now i wished this was remade from the ground up along with the classic and all the best mod's map to go with it
You got me reminiscing about those glory days of game magazines actually being an exciting form of media🥰😌 I am jealous of you though cause I had a N64 and loved it but both me AND my dad just assssuuuummmmed this was a port of PC doom so I didn’t even think twice about pursuing playing it. Years later and I felt like a straight up idiot for missing it 🤣😂🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ you were right and ready for it 👍💪 I would also love to see a ground up remake! After how colourful DOOM ETERNAL is I think they could iterate on that style and make something very fun and special . Thanks for the comment & sorry for the late reply ! 💯🤘💪🙏🔥
Don't blame the game for those broken controllers. You know damn well that you got way too hopped up on that cocaine, Rockso. Don't try to make excuses.
Hi! Me again. left a comment about my love for doom. I got doom 64 and superman 64 on the same Christmas. Also a boomerang controller. I was also very sick with a cold. This saved my Christmas best it could. Also had a GameShark and still couldn't beat superman 64.
You actually got to try Doom64 on original hardware with a boomerang !?! That’s awesome how did it run ?? I’ve heard it runs extremely well for a n64 fps
I was a fps lunatic as a kid. Got a N64 console in Christmas of 98 with golden Eye. The first game i bought after this was with my own saved up money. That game was DooM 64. So yeah i was and still am obsessed with old school fps games. I could have gotten Zelda or Mario, they were on the shelf too, but nah I needed more DooM!
Thank you for sharing your experiences !!! I think it’s funny how bad goldeneye seems now when compared to other shooters(even of the time) 🤣🤣 did you also get Duke64???
In 2020 I had a pre-order of that gem of a port and they even gave me a copy of DOOM Eternal for free so I had a blast in DOOM 64, definitely a must-play thing for people who want something classic and fresh at the same time because... Let's be honest, if not this port millions of people would still think of it as just a doom port and not a unique game in franchise. And id also added some new levels to tie up classic DOOMs with new ones. Aside from plot perspective it's a solid bunch of extra levels just because.
I share the same mindset friend ! And to be honest I thought it was a port until I watched a video by “thatTravGuy” RU-vid channel and as soon as I saw the gameplay I was shocked and HAD to buy it immediately. With the minor and major changes , they still put out one hell of a good game! The sad fact thiugh was I owned a N64 back then and STILL didn’t try it 😂😂🤦♂️🤷♂️🤣 thanks for watching bruv 🙏💯
That would be super cool to see a behind the scenes of them making the molds and monsters!!! Or being the sculptor and having the originals ! Thanks for watching 💪💯🤘🔥✅🙏🙏
You nailed it !!! The maps were such a great part of this game. Found it super interesting to see how a completely different team interpreted their own version of DOOM levels. I love how dark and moody they all are and love how they pay homage to the classics with some of the mazey backtracking levels too. Great stuff all around that keeps me comin back! Thanks for watching &commenting friend !🙏💯🤘
TBH not really you should play 64 in 2023 :) No custom maps nor official missionpacks. The "60 @ 4k" is easy with any custom engine, I'd be surprised if it won't run. The weapons... well, I personally prefer the live OG models (for both weapons and enemies) vs CGI sprites anytime (well, pixelated angle-snapping CGI looks very strange nowadays, when you got used to the "normal" CGI - yet digitized real-world models never age, and have something very special in them). Colored lighting... well, here it looks like "LOOK WE HAVE COLORED LIGHTING IN DOOM LOOK-LOOK-LOOK!!", and ends up in a mess of semi-random colors, so I'm staying with the good old sector lighting. What is really bad though, is the maps are somewhat cramped, and not really good for PC controls using which you prefer running in the open over hiding behind the numerous corners. Just for a general idea it is worth running through, but the good old DooM(2) is much more fun and, funny enough, way less aged by now (as has a ton of custom WADs made for any taste, with quality far above the one of D64).
I appreciate the comment dude ! I can definitely see where you’re coming from - I agree that the endless doomwads online are superior but for what Midway pumped out for a quick N64 game I have to say I am still impressed by it ! Also ya the pixel snap thing does look weird you’re right there! Woulda been cool if they added some voxel stuff even
@@maltsutty Well, to be honest it is not really remarkable as an N64 title as well, as, do forget not, we had Turok back then, which was a blast even as a PC game (one of the first - if not the truly first one - game to have Glide as a mandatory requirement, and doing so for a real reason). Voxels? Naah. Voxels were fun in case of a true raycaster, but on anything GPU-relying (or, I'd say, HW-rasterizer-relying, as there were no actual SIMD GPUs back then) they were mostly useless. I'm not saying it was a bad game, though I can't say it was anything truly worth at least somewhat as much attention as the OG ones. Probably just as a part of the story, or as something familiar seen under a different perspective it is worth of some interest - but still very secondary to the main series.
@@maltsutty The Doom64 remaster was actually Nightdive's second Doom64 game. Before that was Doom64 EX, which was its own standalone game built on the Kex engine. I don't know how much user-made content was released for it, but Doom64 EX did allow for custom levels to be made through its own version of Doom Builder called Doom Builder 64.
Funnily enough that’s how I first tried it before I knew they were doin the stand-alone remaster! They did a great job on it too 💯💯💯🤘 InGZDOOM we trust 🤣💪🤘
doom 64 is more horror that original doom, creepy sounds and unnerving music something creepy about this game anyway this is my favourite of classic doom the no reload animation for the shotgun sucks though without it it just feels like your wielding a magic staff and i just realised doomguy is left handed :) 11:40
The Doom 64 shotgun 'animation' works if you pretend that it's a lever-action shotgun. That's what I've always done. I just think of it as a lever-action shotgun and that's why you don't see a pumping animation. As for the Super Shotgun also having no reload animation.... Well, I have nothing for that. That just flat-out makes no sense lol
Awesome review, funny and fair! I've played this since release so I decided to make maps for this game. We've recently released our 25th anniversary community project called "Ethereal Beakdown" for doom 64. A good challenge for hardcore players on Watch me die. I made 3 maps for it, and now continued on my campaign again for Doom 64 Remaster.
Woah that’s sweet, I can only assume your talkin about the PC version if your making maps?? Or is it like the DOOM2 total conversion to doom 64, because if so I would love to play it !! I lost count of how many wads and megawads I have and it’s allllllways fun trying new ones !! Lemme know how so I can try that ! Thanks for commenting !!!💪💪💯🤘
@@maltsutty Yes, so my work will be for Doom 64 Remaster pc, and when I'm done with it, I may work on the Ex + version. Yea there's way too many to count for Doom 2, and so many awesome wads! My wad will have new sounds, sprites & music. Have a bunch of the progress on my channel if you're curious. I'm gonna make a few more maps then let people playtest(in Doom 64 Discord) the current finished maps. No problem, awesome stuff. :D
I've owned Doom 64 since the mid 90's when it came out. It's my favorite one. I've been playing a lot of "Brutal Doom 64" lately... you should check that out!
That is a great idea !! I love me some brutal doom but somehow the thought never occurred to try BD64😱😱🤦♂️🤦♂️ can’t wait to try some of those levels with the brutal arsenal 😈😈😈
@@maltsutty It changes SO much more than that, too! Lighting, shading, and texturing have all been improved... and they brought back demons like Reapers (Reavers? The shoulder mount, heat seeking rpg demon), Chaingun Zombiemen, and Archviles!
I love all of the Doom games, and my heart definitely goes out to the originals and their add ons, but I give every Doom game a 10/10 because each are masterpieces all things considered
If you played on the highest difficulty you definitely wouldn't be asking for more cyberdemons. LOL! Last level has 3 of them. You made the right call not using the unmaker much. Kinda breaks the game with how overpowered it is
You are absolutely right 🤣😂🤣😂 sometimes I screw around on the higher difficulties and I always die so fast 🤦♂️😂😂 3 cyberdemons sounds fun though I got try that 🧐
@@maltsutty Understandable! It's certainly more difficult than Doom or Doom ll ever get. Plenty of great mods out there though if you want to train up your skills. :)
Having a fully upgraded unmaker actually trivializes the final boss. Not only is the unmaker pretty good on its own, but for each demon key you possess you can lock off one of the areas that spawn in enemies. With all three demon keys you can fight the boss solo if you wish. Midway definitely took a lot of inspiration from Quake when they made Doom64. Not only the traps, but the more gothic themed levels and more moody soundtrack (Quake64 was even better for this if I'm remembering correctly) gave Doom64 a more Quake like vibe. Even the demon keys seemed to be inspired by the runes you get at the end of each episode of Quake, though they offered more utility than Quake's runes did and were accessed through secrets rather than being mandatory. I'm glad your response to the lack of mouselook in Doom64 was pretty rational, because there were a lot of complaints about that when the PC port first released. I get that people like their mouselook, but it really isn't necessary for the game and I think people went overboard complaining about it. If you want to see comparisons between the enemies and weapons of og Doom and Doom64, Decino made videos about that a while back. If memory serves he made separate videos about the enemies and weapons.
This was the first game I got for my 64. It was kind of tough at first and I don't mean just in game difficulty. The game ran so smooth and motion sickness was an issue for me. My eyes weren't used to seeing games run like that so I would literally get headaches and feel sick to my stomach after playing for 15 minutes. It took me a while to get used to it.
my mind was blown summer of 2015 when I rebought a n64 and got my EVERDRIVE. I could not understand why this game was forgotten. I even remember an ad or review for it in EGM or something and I 100% thought it was just a port. and it was a treat playing it again on Xbox Game pass.
I literally just heard about EVERDRIVE, it sounds amazing . Do I understand correct that it’s a emulator that you can put your ROMS on then play in n64???
@Malt Sutty its boring, even on the hardest sttings its way to easy. Its impossible to kill the boss without the demon keys, half the demons are missing, there is no challenge to fighting the demons at all the the challenge is more with solving stupid puzzles than combat puzzles the animations looks retarded, there is no reload animations, the game is a terrible mess, its just a mess and should have never been made. They should have just left it alone. Ive hated this game since it came out
@@seansullivan7928 Like I said I can totally respect your opinion bro! We all have personal reasons for what we like and don't like. I'm just happy you actually explained why you don't like it instead of just talkin shit lol. And I dont wanna boast because I really am not amazing at videogames but I was indeed able to beat mother demon without using all the demon keys! I had to desperately save scum my way through it but I eventually was able to 'best' her 🤣
@@maltsutty I remember back in the late 90s, I used to play Doom 64 constantly. And yes, fighting the Mother Demon 'legit' (without the Unmaker or collecting any Demon Keys) was one of the most infuriatingly difficult boss fights I've ever experienced, even to this day.
I respect your opinion but I had an N64 and some games were awesome like super smash bros and 007 the world is not enough . Looking back tho I HATED the controller lol that was the last Nintendo console I ever owned 🤷♂️😂
