Should You Stop Collecting Sports and Start Collecting Pokemon? 

Most kids today don’t collect cards to enjoy and appreciate the hobby as we did. They seem to be more concerned about flipping cards for money.

Very good points. I played and followed a lot of Pokemon back in the day. I’d add that Pokemon adds a nostalgia factor for millennials+. In addition, TCG have adapted their cards to pre-teens / teens. Pokemon have increased their artwork and rarity on WAIFU trainers - very desirable cards for pre-puberty teens. Also would add that the art is 10x better on TCGs (imo). I currently only do sports cards, but have noticed a massive interest in TCG with younger kids.

I was excited to see this. I guess I hoped for a more elaborate explanation. The kids are simply not interested in pro sports. Two weeks ago I drove my son and another player on my 10U baseball team to a game. I asked the other player who his favorite pro baseball player was and he did not have one. I asked if he could name any pros and he said Babe Ruth. I asked my son if he could name any pros and he said “I know Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson.” I asked them if they could name a current player and they could not. I don’t want to overstate the abilities of these kids, but they are both above average players in a competitive league. None of the kids on the team care *at all* about collecting sports cards. When I was a kid everyone on my team collected cards and most of them had high interest in current team standings, player stats, etc. It has gone 180 the other way. There are clear existential ramifications for the sports card industry here.

I think the enjoyment of going into card shops and buying single packs seems to be gone… I remember as a kid always being able to get a pack out of all the products.

I rember hunting the Griffey. It was simple. And we played Ragball and wiffle ball all day everyday. Its a different time. Now I go to the post office daily to ship Pokemon cards.

god remember how rare autos used to be back in late 80s early 90s? lol chronicles….ugh. prizm black. only in chronicles. lol. and the 1/1 trevor lawrence clear vision i need is in that set. i have the rainbow. youre totally correct. pokemon is huuuuge. and as far as youtube, the gaming and retro gaming/toy community on youtube is probably 10-20x the size (subs and views) of the card hobby people.

I like some of the designs on non-game used relics - most stink though. Sticker auto's should be outlawed - I could care less about them regarless of the player - I really care about aito's that I actually saw the player / person signned * at least said hello/thanks. Kids don't care about "baseball" cards because price point is too high and and kids care more about other things in life.

Kids don't like sports itself. Gaming is king. If the video game industry started printing cards ... They would eat Pokemon cards' lunch
