Can you do a video on touch up paint? Because my lord. I daily my 19 STI and the paint chips like crazy. Got quoted $1000+ just to get it professionally fixed, more because it's CWP color.
I have the full coverage warranty for my 18’STI. 8 months of getting it brand new 2 years ago, I went Cobb AP stage 1+ big SF intake ots tune. Since then I’ve had my brakes/rotors done, camshaft carrier replaced, rear struts replaced, one of the exhaust replaced, all covered by warranty even with my intake and Access Port still installed. New exhaust will affect warranty if it throws off o2 codes. It’s all about the dealer and if the tune or mods directly affect damage to the car.
I’m in a similar situation, but I bought mine with these mods (I don’t think the dealer knew what the hell he was selling), but am obviously still worried about my warranty not covering things. Hopefully I have the same luck as you
So I have an '18 STI and I just installed coilovers and control arms and still under warranty. I feel like I voided the warranty, but I'm not sure. What do you think? I don't really plan on doing anything to the engine until after the warranty.
one last thing I'm not saying you're wrong, but the service tec that I talk to you at both dealers the last two or three years said they can only see key cycles of when the battery was reset. if that what your meaning when you say they can tell? I can only say have a good relationship with your dealer and feel them out first before you modify. cause that's what I did and they have always replaced stuff for me. but every dealer is different of course. And last I agree about the air oil separator how can you do that if you're saying Subaru may have a problem of you doing that.? It sounds like not a win-win situation to me. lol never mind I finished the video and got what you said .
The key cycles are not what I'm referring to, my buddy is the service manager for a local Subaru dealer to me and they can actually see in the ECU when a tune has been flashed onto the car. Doesn't matter how many key cycles the car has or has not gone through. But it is a possibility that not all dealers have the tools to view this, although I would assume that they do
Maintenance...maintenance...maintenance and don't treat the car like "i don't give a f***" thats the ticket, boost it once in a while but don't be stupid reckless 💪
my rule of thumb is: If it's your only vehicle, and you're still making payments on it, then it's not worth it. If it is not your only vehicle, you don't care if it blows or you're rich. Then SEND IT!!
Hey man, great video, got yourself a new sub. I got a question though- when you talk about "modification", is it performance mods only or do you include cosmetic mods too? I want to get a spoiler on my new impreza but a friend told me that it would void my warranty
2016 STi, voided warranty since the beginning and slowly coming up on 40k miles. Also, let's be honest.. the stock tune is awful and worse for the car than one from a reputable tuner.
Voided mine at 2500 miles Cobb e93 redline intake tune got to 3500 and cracked a ringland it’s a 7k job they’re paying for parts I’m covering labor for 2500
Answering on the topic: I believe that first 10k miles should be driven without any modifications to the powertrain. Let the car to "bed in" and "break in", get all the little nuances fixed under warranty, 10k will be enough for some good oil tests in oil test labs to see if everything is good with the engine and transmission AND THEN... start to modify as you want and void the warranty. That's IMHO, of course. Just sharing my opinion
Thats not a bad way of looking at it, I did not start really nodding mine until about 12K miles or so. Like you said gives some time for parts to fail of they're going to
Alright, brother. To keep warranty or void it, how to tune the subies, what parts are best and worst - it's all good. BUT.... SERIOUS QUESTION HERE: Y u so hateful towards mosquitos? just kidding. Keep killing 'em. good job :)
Hey bud! Could you recommend any specific Pad/rotor combo for a 2019 WRX STi with the larger Brembos?? The dealer quoted parts only over $3k. The car is a daily driver, and sees a road course 2-3x a year on an intermediate level. Thank you!
Maybe a way to upgrade the turbo and keep the warranty is to order the s209 turbo through Subaru and have them install the part. Assuming the turbo used is a Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) part might make this a little bit easier since the part is directly available from the manufacturer. I'm sure the people at the dealership will try to push back or maybe drag their feet when investigating if it is possible while maintaining the warranty. Of course, they will charge you more than if you went somewhere else and had the exact same part installed.
I have a 2020 STI, I have the invidia r400 catback and oh boy do I want to do more... lol but warranty is more important than a little bit extra of power
My Sti need a short block replacement at 30K. Warranty saved me about 5000 dollars. I have secondary question: Should you get extended warranty? It is worth it ?
Yes. It's worth it Every time. If Subaru would make these cars drive well from factory you may not need to void it. But I think Subaru purposely screwed 15 to 19 wrx owners with that horrible oem tune. I know I know.... emissions....epa.... I get it. But look at other makes of the same category and I garuntee none of them have a worse tune than the 2015 to 2019 wrx. Sti is fine from factory. If you haven't driven a stock wrx from 15 to 19 you won't know what I'm talking about. But for anyone in one with a stock tune I give you props. Took me 1 year of almost selling it before I got a tune. Now it's like a normal car.
I'm torn. I sometimes get what sounds like engine detonation, so I haven't taken my car to the track in case I need a warranty repair on this relatively new car. I have a list of things I wanna do to the car but I guess I'll have to hold off for a year or two to make sure things are fine before going all out.
So I’ve been recently thinking about getting back into the Subaru game in the past I’ve had an 08 STI stage 2 pro tuned and I loved it. I’m thinking of probably going with a 19 or newer STI and just wanted to go stage 2 again with the pro tune. As long as I don’t go beyond that it’s a pretty reliable set up correct? I would also address all the longevity mods you talked about in your other video. I just want to do it right! Thanks! Great videos!!
Should you void your warranty ? From a Subaru technicians standpoint, no I would not recommend it. Point being because a lot of customers can’t afford the repairs as they are quite expensive. To second that, a lot of you DIY’ers don’t know what the hell your working on/looking at a majority of the time. Also stay away from OTS tunes . They’re all quite finicky in my opinion
Agreed OTS is not good, and wanted to make sure in covered those aspects that it's not it's not was days a cheep fix and do you actually know what your doing 😅
Protuned Stage 2, always leave the AP in the dock. I troll the dealer for my free oil changes. I'm lucky asf, Hendrickson Automotive group is tuner friendly. Woot woot bois....
I say void that warranty however cause my 17 sti blew the fuck up into flames literally at 13k miles and was still stock and they held me in a loan for a minute til I got the 18.
ER Rodz my buddy had warranty work done and ran into this issue and took out the intake and obviously the AP and actually had no issues at the dealership! Just saying.
@@Treverswain1 just hope i don't run any issues my car is not a daily and I'll get protune any time soon. But thats good to know, thats why I always keep the oem parts, never know.
the Dealership i just got my 2020 STI from included a limited lifetime powertrain warranty and im so torn on mods. i want to do the all the quality of life mods when my 7 year 100k extended warranty is up but i think that will void the lifetime limited which sucks!
Hey! I own a 2021 wrx and was wondering if switching out the intake would void my warranty. I am thinking about replacing it with the Cobb Big SF Intake, along with adding the Cobb access port into my car. I would love to know if this affects my warranty in any way that should make me reconsider doing this. Thank you!
Swapping the intake will require at minimum an OTS Tune. Tuning the ECU will change thr PID number. That will raise a red flag to subaru if a warranty claim were to happen
I have an 8yr/80000 Mile warranty ( idk if that’s dealership or an upgraded option every dealer offers ) and my dealership said that an Ets Catback won’t void it. However I’m moving states soon and worried what the new dealership will say even though the exhaust shouldn’t be too much of a cause for engine failure
As an owner of a few sti/wrxs... Essentially it comes down to 2 things: do you have north of $6k to replace the engine if something goes wrong? If yes, mod it up and enjoy the car. If no, do some fun mods (cat back, exterior mods, etc.) and enjoy the car as is stock. These new WRX FA’s seem to be good motors and same thing with the improved EJ in the 2018+ but these motors are known to pop. There are plenty of supporting mods to increase longevity in these engines but most people look past these and just go for “bang for buck” parts (exhaust, tune, e85) and call it a day there. P.s. I’ve been through 2 EJ motor replacements , one car stock, the other modified.
Yo Smeed, just did a RU-vid search on Cobb Stage 2 Drivetrain package installs. Plenty of stg 1, none on the Stage 2. Just giving you ideas and helping you spend your cash.
If I was to do it again I would of bought one with a built motor, all the fueling, turbo, and supporting mods done already. People sink 10s of thousands of dollars into these cars then get sick and or fed up with it. They will never see any of the money back they sunk into the car. One would be lucky if they received book value. Just need to do a hell of an inspection first.
@@Dave-so7sf usually the ones you found on auction have been ripped of all mods if not they are high mileage so you never know about the maintenance record it's not worthy knowing they are salvage title I just want a low mileage one and modified myself nothing crazy just longevity mods and exterior for flexing on the gram 😂
If you were needing a tune but have no dyno in a reasonable distance, or don't like the ots maps call Eric @ tourqed performance. Tell him Aaron sent you.
I haven't risked it for the biscuit yet but one day I will. My mechanic skill's aren't up to par...nor is my bank account.😒😒🤦🤦 Good video dude... informative as always 😁😁👍🏼👍🏼💯💯
Iag aos , oil pick up and baffle plate, are what iv done so far engine longevity wise next is the cylinder 4 cooling mod. Then it will be time for the fun stuff. Fuel pressure regulator, ebcs, dp, elh, bigger injectors, fuel pump and probably a top mount. Love your videos man keep it up.
When I end up getting the funds for a 2007 wrx I'm not even gonna think twice about it. I have friends with fast cars like a 2016 c63 amg and I want to not fall behind an absolutly insane amount. Just a few bus lengths so I am gonna do the AOS, probably cyl 4 cooling mod, catback, and a tune and maybe something like a short shifter if I really want to do that. Also then I would do coils, sways, and endlinks to try to dial in the way the car handles a little more.
A 2007 WRX has no factory warranty left, no matter how few miles it has. So go nuts on a car that old. The dealerships don't care about that car. In fact, the 2017 cars are just now coming off their warranties as 2020 progresses. "3 years or 30K miles, whichever comes first." It all depends on when the car was first sold.
I have some 2nd gear issues (cold start it sort of grinds and my car is 2019 sti)... all I have is an AP, AOS and conservative time. Would this void my warranty for transmission issue? I’m still tryna do my research because they just keep saying it’s fine.... help?
It shouldn't void your warranty, transmission issues are generally separated when it comes to that aspect. Unless you changed the mounts or bushings you should be fine for warranty purposes
Steve Kim I have a 2019 STI as well and mine does the same when it’s cold and goes away after it warms up. I hear it’s normal and if you change your gear oils it helps
i just got a 2018 sti 2 week ago and the car have factory warranty and unlimited lifetime warranty. and i just put a cobb SF+ AP on the car . do you think it void unlimited lifetime warranty? i buy the lifetime warranty for $2,500
You can get your money back for what you spent on the warranty at the dealer. Bht if you already flashed a map on the car then they will be able to tell and you've voided it. Most need to contribute the failure to thr mod but a retune will auto decline the car
Got my 18 STI new in Jan of 18 with the intent of lowering it and putting an exhaust on it nothing more. 1500 miles later I was full bolts on with a Cobb 20g. Ooopsy
On my 8th Subaru and 3rd STi now and I plan to keep my 2020 STi stock as long as possible. Bought it Dec 18 and already have 5500 miles on it. I got the 100k warranty so we will see how good this engine holds up. I got the mod bug, but only doing suspension and exterior mods.
@@Smeedia Not going to lie, your vids make me want to mod and ive been debating on an AP. But ill be talking to my local dealership soon for my 6k service and ill see how mod friendly they are. Trying to hold out as long as possible for engine mods.
OK Smee, I smashed ya. This was a good vid on a well worn topic. BTW, what kind of a track owner would collect data on customers and then share it with dealerships?
Hmmm, this makes hesitate even on those longevity mods like AOS - as my first Subaru i do admit I have 0 knowledge on the engine but do wanna install those mods to keep it running in long term. Shall I just go ahead? Will that consider as low risk?
Smeedia yeah I have a buddy used to work on Subarus so I am sure he can help me with that. Nice content as usual and looks like you have been uploading a lot so I haven’t been up to date on your video, great work!!!
It’s interesting because this video is very relevant to me right now! I’ve decided that I’ll probably stick with most of the warranty before I do the things I want to, (mainly suspension, tire size, transmission improvements, and the engine reliability mods you mentioned), but I won’t wait half of the life of the vehicle to do so. But, yeah, just got it two weeks ago so I’ve got a lot of time to plan..and I’m still in the break in period so I haven’t gotten the entire feel of the car yet. At least watching your videos let’s me vicariously experience the joys of modding - thanks man!
I too have a 2020 WRX that I bought in late November. I still only have of this evening 3200 miles on it. Getting close to my 3rd oil change. LOL! As for mods, I'm a bit undecided about this. I want the AOS, but that seems like a clear violation of the engine warranty. Even though its what the car should have on it from the factory and it will help the engine last longer. I need to do more research and talk to a couple local shops who work closely with Subaru dealerships locally. But like you I think I will leave the heavy duty engine power mods alone for now. At the moment I'm working on improving the factory brakes. They are fairly terrible (non-Sports package)! My next mod is a set of Goodridge braided lines all the way around and some DOT5.1 brake fluid. I've already done the brake master cylinder brace. If the lines don't improve things enough for me then I'm moving on to the 4 pot front calipers and 2 pot rears. Then handling related mods. And a few more exterior goodies.
What are the chances of something happening if I run a stage two pro rune? 2019 STI Accesport, Cobb air box, gfb bov, tomei catless downpipe and catback Tomei.
I agree, Knowing about the engine and platform is so important. I have a 15 wrx and they are know for lots of issues and I personally havent experienced any and im running on 71k miles here soon.
@@Smeedia Exactly My tuner says " you have graduated and now understand that things will happen from time to time". Since like any new Subie owner modifying we freak out about every little thing that happens
@Smeedia People would be very foolish to think that Subaru doesn't have people that work for them that follow people on social media and RU-vid and car magazines and etc etc etc.... they know what these things are popular for!
