The Green Mile movie reaction is here! And I honestly don't know why we waited so long to watch this film. This incredible movie staring Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Hanks is such a heartfelt story. Directed by the incredibly talented Frank Darabont the shift in tones in this film are done so seamlessly it's truly difficult not to put this film into one of our favorites. This film is also based on a Stephen King novel under the same title. We absolutely love Stephen King and after our Shawshank Redemption reaction it was only right to move on to the next beloved movie adaptation.

Hey guys! Wanted to clarify since I did cut out the intro to this reaction. Denise had watched this film before but it’s been at least a decade. This is my (Ari) first time watching this gem. Hope you enjoy the reaction! Remember to hit the notification bell or subscribe so you don't miss out on Part 1! Copyright hit this one hard so we had to keep the edit a bit tight. Thank you guys for all the love and support. We'll see you guys in the next one! I used to be a correctional officer before I became disabled. There were good guards, there were bad guards, and there were guards like Percy. For the most part, guards like him never stayed for long. The inmates and other officers made sure of that 😎

I agree. No one writes the despicable traits of an antagonist like Stephen King. Percy's so easy to hate. Another Stephen King adaptation with an antagonist you will love to hate is Joe St George in Dolores Claiborne. It an amazing movie starring the great Kathy Bates. It truly is Stephen King's lost gem. Check it out if you haven't already.

Another honorable mention of despicable villains is Mrs Carmody (or Mother Carmody) in his novella The Mist. She had me PISSED. OFFFF. Also in IT, Tom Marsh was utterly vile. King just knows how to make you despise someone 😂😂😂 We're definitely gonna check out Dolores Clairborne, we heard some amazing things about that one! Kathy Bates surely killed it in that as she did with Misery! - Denise

Right though haha?! So many scenes between couples feel either too forced, or not close enough. Sometimes it's the actors, but it's also up to the director to guide them in the right direction in order to get the best performance.

Nothing suggests the lawyer was racist or the court was 'racust'. Possible they were or weren't. But, I'd say the fact he was found with thr bodies, blood all over, and claiming 'he trued to take it back' are legit reasons to convict him. WE know the story. The court doesn't know they're in a Stephdn King story and something supernatural is around. Not everything is racism. Go watch/read To Kill A Mickingbird. THAT was racism. This story has ZERO to do with racism. Only a racist gets focused on racism when it's a non issue

I mean sure it played a part, but he was found with two dead girls in his arms and saying "I couldn't help it - I tried to take it back, but it was too late". Not knowing about his powers there's only one way most people will take that, and that's as a confession.

Any infection can turn into sepsis if severe enough/ left untreated for long enough. Also, I'm not sure when it ended, but for a long time, doctors would tell the husband/male relative what was wrong with a woman and it was simply up to him whether or not he wanted her to know. Lurleen Wallace was a governor of Alabama in 67 and her husband was told that she had suspicious tissue growth after a C-section and he elected not to tell her so she could help him with his campaign. She didn't get immediate treatment and her condition worsened, she eventually found out but it'd already progressed and she died at the age of 41. That's why the warden knew his wife's diagnoses and had to tell her himself. 🤷‍♀️

I think it was a conscious decision of the director NOT to get into the back stories of the inmates so that the audience would feel more sympathy for their plight. I don't think there is a movie with Tom Hanks that doesn't have a scene where he isn't taking a leak.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
It was definitely a smart choice, it allowed us to simply get to know the inmates without their past brought into it. As Brutal says, these men are paying their dues, so that's the approach we take as the audience. It allowed the film's sentimentality to truly blossom!

My brother used to be a corrections officer before going into Federal law enforcement, from the time he was a guard then later as a supervisor never wanted to know what a person had been convicted of. He said he wanted to only judge a person on what he saw & how he interacted with them. When you know a person's crimes implicit bias goes into overdrive and there is already a bias from a person being convicted that exists. When people would ask him but shouldn't you know in case their dangerous? He say "Any living being put in a cage is dangerous, but to then brand them, force them into a corner & make them defensive is a much greater danger. Plus we are trained to always be aware, to never let your guard down & always be prepared something might not be as it seems." He never once had an altercation. I am not sure if that was part of his training or just our upbringing but it has served him well. I know that not every corrections officer has that same approach because of what I have witnessed working in hospital nursing. We often would get inmates that needed greater medical attention than a corrections facility could provide and some of the CO's were cruel & lacked decency. There was one inmate that came in for a DNC after being raped presumably by one of the guards since she had been behind bars when she got pregnant. She also had several physical injuries from another inmate the main reason for her admission. She had wanted to have the baby but when her family refused to assume custody she chose to end the pregnancy rather than give her child away. Every single corrections officer went out of there way to tell the nursing staff her criminal history hoping that they would withhold pain medication. Or they would tell us no give her the lowest dose possible on the range of her med order ( simply meaning a doctor may order .5ml to 4ml every x amount of hours for pain depending on their stated pain level). However while that was meant to be physically cruel they also were emotionally abusive because they would put on shows like "A Baby Story" knowing that she had been pregnant. When we tried to report these incidents we basically were blown off because not wanting a person over medicated and an inmate not liking what was on tv aren't crimes or abuse of power. The Green Mile is such an exceptional movie for demonstrating the nuance that good & bad people exist on both sides of the law. I loved this movie and the book. The Green Mile speech in the book on the last pages is among my all time favorite literary lines. It is done well in the film too.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
Wow. This was difficult to read. Thank you, for taking the time to share your and your brother's experiences. This brings Brutal's line to mind - that these men had been paying their dues. A basic sense of decency and humanity has to be present, though it may be difficult due to that implicit bias you mentioned. Not digging into their crimes and getting to know the inmates as they are at the present would likely have built an easier rapport with the inmates. There are sadly too many in the law that do things for the wrong reasons - control, power and the abuse of both. And our understanding of abuse has yet to grow as it's not just the physical but also psychological and emotional abuse that can destroy minds and bodies of the victims. We tend to forget that, of course depending on the prison, that some of those people are incarcerated for more minor infractions. Then we also must consider the inequality within the justice system that leads to mishandled trials, tampered evidence etc. It's a very complex topic and certainly a difficult one to give a simple answer to. This story has captured the good and the bad within humankind so incredibly well - nuanced and with grace. The book must also be incredible. As a huge Stephen King fan, I'm (Denise) going to be ordering the book asap! Again thank you for your comment, we appreciate your candor and effort!

I’ve always liked the coincidence of having actor Harry Dean Stanton in a movie with two characters whose names are “Harry” and “Dean Stanton”. Makes me wonder if Stephen King used the actor’s name as inspiration for the characters’ names.

I've never done it, but I've always had a huge fear that I might start bust out knee slap laughing at a funeral. I used to do it in church, class, family gatherings. I guess I'm just able to keep my crap together at the most solemn of gatherings, thank God. When Paul makes the comment about it, I'm always reminded of that fear.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
Oh my goodness, definitely can relate to that fear! Laughing in stressful situations is actually not that uncommon of a response, so it makes sense that he wanted to nip that in the bud! Nobody needs to hear someone laughing whilst strapped to a chair, awaiting their imminent ending...

This movie covers every human emotion . It's IMO one of the top 10 best movies ever made. What do you think?
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Год назад
Gotta say it’s pretty up there for us too. You have the cruelty aspect of humanity but also compassion, love, and respect. It’s truly an incredibly told story. And the end wraps it up so neatly. This is one of those films that stays with you forever. And in our opinion there is no bigger sign that your art succeeded than when it leaves a mark.

But i could not stop laughing everytime i heard his name. That's what i would call my dog LOL. Even the mouse had more backbone then him and outlived him to.

Phenomenal movie, loved it, everytime I watch it, I cry, and anyone who says they don't or didn't cry at this movie is either lying or they have no heart. I know exactly hoe Paul Edgecombe feels, I'm disabled and have had urinary infections before, so I know exactly what he was going through, and pissing razorblades is exactly what it feels like.

The saddest part is that the execution scene of John Coffey was based on real life events...the wrongful conviction & execution of a 14 year old boy in South Carolina..the line that John Coffey said about I'm scared of the dark...thats what the little boy said. His name was George Stinney. Tragic

Some people may ask why Paul didn't just use penicillin for his UTI. Well, although it was discovered in the 1920s, it wasn't mass produced until the mid 1940s, about 10 years after his UTI. In case it's not obvious, the "judges" and "politicians" who came to see Del's mouse perform were just employees of the prison, such as janitors, etc. They just needed to get Del out of there so they could do the rehearsal of the execution without him being there. Speaking of Del, they don't say it in the movie but his crime was raping, murdering and setting on fire a young girl. Then, that fire caught the next door building on fire which killed six more people. They left this out, I suspect, because it would be harder to feel sympathy for Del if we knew how horrific his crimes were. Even so, when Del says "I wish I had met you guys somewheres else" it always gets me in the feels because it makes you think about how different a person can be under different conditions.

Damn, Jack Nicholson was already there. How could I not notice him? Has he always been there? Sure, we can see his full crazy face in your new studio, but also, for your first reaction in there, TLOU Episode 8 (if I'm not mistaken), it was so fitting. I agree with you. This episode was very very good, because the terror, the predatory pastor, the unhealthy climate, everything seemed so classic, already seen, and yet not boring for a single second. Wait, I'm not supposed to talk about TLOU here, that's not the point! Raaaa, I love the plants in your new studio, it seemed a bit empty and I preferred the old one but it's so much better this way. You had warned us it wasn't finished. WAIT, also, I would never have thought of rewatching The Green Lantern and The Shawshank Redemption without you and the suggestions of the other patrons. I had enjoyed them but thought they would be outdated by now. But some classics never go out of style. This community has good taste 😀!

The Green Mile is an AMAZING movie, so glad you gave it a shot! Some of the older movies can feel outdated for sure, but some are truly timeless! We are lucky to have awesome people like you supporting us and giving us cool recommendations! Also thank you soooo much for commenting again, your support means the world to us!!
