Why are so many people now suffering with Shoulder Pain? How about a muscle called the pectoralis minor! We call it “pec minor” for short.
In this video we:
1) make the observation on how the pec minor can cause shoulder pain, and how it is related to biceps tendinitis of the long head.
2) graphs and pictures of the muscles involved.
3) what goes wrong in the shoulder.
4) anatomical postural issues.
5) how to massage shoulder with a professional therapist.

Received a diagnosis of shoulder impingement several years ago. Saw a sports medicine doctor, general practitioner, and several physical therapists. Nothing worked. Endless exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles, the lower traps, the rhomboids. During covid the PT on an video visit did not diagnose my winging of the scapula after I told her that I felt a bump in my back.One GP was ready to do a cortisone shot. I said no, let my try physical therapy again. Another doctor saw me and said that at 63 years old, it probably wouldn't get better. An overuse condition. Finally a physical therapy's assistant said that I had a tight minor pec muscle. After a couple massages and a little time it is now all good! So my respect for this doctor to raise awareness for this minor muscle that is majorly important!

This is the most helpful I’ve come across which tied together all of my symptoms, of which the 3 top orthos in SD nor 3 highly regarded PT’s could not figure out. Thank you for caring! This is so helpful!

I had a broken collar bone that never mended. It filled in with cartridge. 26yrs I unconsciously compensated by using my lower arm. I have a huge 'Popeye' muscle instead of a bicep. Working on this whole area NOW to rebuild shoulder and bicep. Caused my whole posture to Lean crooked. Lots of work ahead for me. Very helpful video.

Awesome video! My husband (who does a lot of weight lifting) recently went to a PT for some nagging shoulder pain and the pec stretches they gave him made a big difference. So now I'm excited to test out some of these massage techniques and assisted stretches to give him some more relief. Thanks for such a thorough video!

Thank you so much for taking the time for this video. I was a brand new truck driver and put in a terrible position, almost like those monkey handle bars for 12 hours a day. Until I lost all grip strength and tremendous pain and numbness. I've been diagnosed with pectoralis minor syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome. Can't work, lost our health insurance and it has literally debilitated my life. It's been the worst 2 years of my life. I'm very thankful for this and can hopefully mimic this on myself by what you've shown

Most of my colleagues grab to massage the trapezius muscles or rhomboids when their clients complain about shoulder neck pain. But those muscles are just victims... the fugitives are in general the chest muscles who get ignored most of the time. Yet again good job sir. Short sweet and quick to the point!

[• massage Therapist here in Canada. Pec minor was my nemesis! I had 12 therapists working on me. It wasn’t until I got pec minor (as well as subscapularis, which seem to regulate blood flow) released, that my shoulder went back in position.•]

Excellent Video and information. LOL.... I've seen so many therapists say you shouldn't ever have the patient c/o pain during tx. Ive found that doesn't work :) When I personally went to the chrio for arm pain, he used active release, and I was better instantly from nerve pain acquired during moving. It hurt like hell, but I was instantly better. I use it on my patients, and most the time they gain ROM and at least 50% or more pain reduction. I wish the surgeons would listen to people like you because sometimes, they just don't have a clue.

Thank you for posting the visuals!! Have had two years of agony and anguish, dealing with progressively worsening shoulder neck and back pain with over ten unhelpful (expensive) doctors and a few who helped one aspect of the issues. I have shoulder bursitis, osteoarthritis of the SC Joint and a herniated disc. I think something is wrong with my serratus anterior, but can’t get doctors to take it seriously, even though I’ve been through the imaging and proved I have osteoarthritis and need help. Do you have any advice? Any specific specialist types I should google? Anyone in CA? Thank you for any and all help, including these videos ❤

Please show where to work to release sternum pain.my sternum popped after I rolled over in bed. Sent shooting pain and sent all muscles on right side into spasm. Could not catch breath. Went to ER 10/11/23. DX costochondritis. Ice helped, heat made it worse. The side pain and spasm left after 4 days. But the center of sternum has a lump in it and still in alot of pain . Doctors said X-ray showed nothing. I’m going to try this massage but if you have other methods I would be so grateful. Happy new year

Can tight pec minor cause rear shoulder pain bossman? I assume so since the mechanics will be all over the place. I have a rounded shoulder, and I do notice the tendency of my arm to internally rotate when I do everything (steering, etc.)
@gamalcastile
@gamalcastile Год назад
With a hypertonic pec minor causing scapular protraction and anterior tilt, could that be the causal reason for radial nerve compression and subsequent triceps and pec atrophy/weakness? The hypertonic pec minor seems as though it would also be the causal point for a hypertonic coracobrachialis and biceps brachii as mentioned in the video. I have experienced distinct lateral head triceps atrophy along with an inability to fully contract my pec, triceps and even lat over the past 5 months. I never experienced an injury per se, but did take a full contact punch to that same pec a week before I started to experience the weakness and parasthesia. The punch did not phase me at all at the time, so I dismissed it. But now I have distinct tightness mostly in the proximal biceps, coracobrachialis, pec minor, teres major, and external rotators.
@hollandmassagereflexology2000
Yes that's been my experience. The assisting muscles of the PC (CB. BB ) are self casting to relieve the pec minor causing internal rotation. That makes the lateral head of the triceps over stretch and signals muscle spindles to continue to relax. Less contraction feels like atrophy. The way I correct it on myself is to hang from a pull up bar with supinated grip with my feet on a chair slightly posterior to shoulders. Over a mouth of daily hanging the signaling stops and a return to normal seems to ensue.

Hi there, could a hypertonic biceps or pec muscle be mistaken for atrophic?

Good video, and maybe I missed it, but this video doesn’t tell me how to distinguish if it’s actually the pec minor or subscapularis causing shoulder issue. If I massage or press on the trigger points in the teres or subscapularis region, I feel referred pain to the shoulder region. But massaging the pec minor area doesn’t cause any referred shoulder pain. Is the patient suppose to feel ‘anything’ while the pec minor is being worked on? Should they feel referred shoulder pain or anything.
@hollandmassagereflexology2000
@hollandmassagereflexology2000 6 месяцев назад
if your on the pec minor and it feels like sand in the eye to the patient, you know its the problem. If you have to search hard for it its not the problem. pec minor is the easiest muscle to palpate.

How long does it take to release a tight pec minor?? Please reply
@carlyw60
@carlyw60 Год назад
It depends on how tight it is to begin with. Many times I hold pressure till I feel it release. If holding pressure alone doesn't work I add shoulder rotations. In some instances I've had the patient move their arm across their chest to the opposite shoulder, back to neutral, and then do rotations while I pin the muscle. It is really effective. Holland is teaching something vital to releasing shoulders. Very good teacher!
