20 years ago I got this. The cause is using big muscles to do fine motor movements. I'm right handed and the area of my left rhomboid got hot, tight, and painful. Since not working a desk job is out of the question, I got a keyboard carrel to put it low (don't know how people type without pain with elbows less than 90°) and started using a track ball or touch pad. Went to a standing desk a few years later. The problem never really goes away but with exercises like Bob and Brad's I keep it tamped down. At the gym pulling exercises help but especially face pulls work well. For just maintaining good posture the "chest up" cue works because it drives the shoulder blades together and down and pushes the shoulder back.

I just started developing bad shoulder pain 2 weeks ago from this! Switching to a vertical mouse and trying to lower my arm placement in my work setup so my shoulder isn't up too high. EDIT: I realized Bob and Brad didn't seem to talk about that but definitely make sure that your left and right shoulders can stay level with each other while you're on your mouse. My right shoulder was up higher.

You guys crack me up... now it's my turn. I'm 59 yrs old and been working with computers for probably 40 years. I've had some shoulder discomfort over the years here and there but mostly after engaging in a non routine activity like throwing around a ball on a whim. I figured it was due to age and lack of routine engagement. Three years ago, after about 5 years of suffering lower back pain and sciatica to the point where I was limping around like and old man and barely sleeping due to pain. I was diagnosed and had my right hip replaced. This miracle surgery changed my life. In less than a year I was walking, running, jumping (and sleeping) like I haven't in years. At this point I decide to revisit an old passion, skateboarding (here is where you're supposed to laugh). Yes, skateboarding. Transitional skateboarding, at skateparks, on inclines, ramps, and in bowls. No real impact skating, pretty much carving and kick turns, with full safety gear. Anyway, the first year my knees were getting swollen and very painful. I started wearing knee compression sleeves and doing exercises from your videos. It seems that I needed to get my leg and core muscles in shape for this activity and my knees are now way better. I did notice that with almost all frontside maneuvers (where I have to lean, reach, and stretch to my right) where causing discomfort in my right shoulder. I pretty much shrugged it off. Then boom, I took a straight on slam to my right elbow where there was very little sliding on my elbow pad but more of a blunt jam to my right shoulder. Now I'm hurting and worrying about rotator cuff injury. I notice more shoulder pain when working since I'm always at a keyboard and mouse (hence "Mouse Shoulder"). I also find more pain when laying down and trying to sleep. Since I started skating again I neglected to focus any training or exercise to my upper body and am noticing sore triceps and other arm muscles since that slam. I just tried your "W" and feel this will be beneficial, I'll try the shoulder raises later and hope for the best. Thanks!

Thank you for this and the suggestions. I have a disk issue at C5/C6, and having to work with a mouse exacerbates it quite a lot. PT, injections, TENS, pain med, chiropractic, ice or heat - sometimes these help, and I'm pretty diligent about posture and taking breaks for a few sets of exercises similar to these. I'm on the computer a bit less than most who have responded, but sessions are intense and unrelieved by typing (CADD work). Since I'm now starting to have numbness in the non-dominant arm and hand, looks like time for another MRI. But my shoulder itself is thankfully not impinged any more (been through that), and don't ever want to be there again. P.S. And a big thank you for mentioning in other videos Dr. Kirsch's book. Got my own copy now!

What's interesting is that I switched to a vertical mouse to see if this would improve my wrist issues (together with physical therapy), but then my shoulder started going bad. Despite having the correct posture of keeping the upper arm straight down and forearm in a 90 degree angle to that. So my issues actually arose when I started sitting correctly. This combined with the fact that I started doing shoulder exercises and I suspect that my sore mouse shoulder actually came from sitting behind the computer after doing a workout and not giving the muscles in my shoulder enough time to purely relax.

Thanks for the video, guys. I recently started using my mouse lefty because of the pain. I've been watching you guys for years and I think this is exactly what I have. I actually found a different video that was very helpful for diagnosing this. I'll do those measurements for this too! Definitely have had this for years. My right shoulder is all sorts of messed up but nothing shows up on MRI or anything. I seem to have some severe scapular dyskinesis. Anyway, I'll post back here if any treatment helps for anyone else out there dealing with this.

@BrettWyrick
@BrettWyrick 3 года назад
@@andrefohlin I ended up seeing a PT local to me. I just started treatment. I'll keep you posted on the results, because I've been in pain for years trying to find a solution to this and my PT thinks he's found it. So far, my PT believes that I have some nerve irritation (possibly nerve damage) to the C6 disc in my vertebrae from an injury or something years ago. He says all the nerves from the shoulder where I have pain (and wrist pain) are connected to C6 (my pain is on my right shoulder, where I utilize the mouse). He is focusing on some "rigid" taping of my shoulder (McConnell taping techniques, he says) to basically act as a sort of "cast" - my body is actually pretty high in mobility, he says, but I need STABILITY first and foremost because my right shoulder just kinda hangs there, not in the place it should be (too far forward). The rigid tape is a sort of crutch that will remain on 24/7 as I get stronger using the BodyBlade (more on that below). The taping brings me SO MUCH RELIEF. I'm in pain all the time, but the tape definitely helps. It's a couple pieces of tape that lift my shoulder blade area upward. I wonder if I have some sort of thoracic nerve irritation (but not failure), because this kinda lifts the muscles away from it. Idk. Once I start getting stronger, he said we'll move to Kinesio tape since it's not quite as rigid as the leuko-tape, then eventually no tape at all. Kinda like going from a cast to a brace to nothing. For exercises, he had me get this goofy PT device called a "BodyBlade" that works like 100+ muscles because I have several muscles that have atrophied in that area. For me, it's honestly a solid workout, though using it is kinda weird (but also kinda fun). I'll keep you posted on my journey here.

Think prevention! I am 89.and use my mouse over 10+ hours per day for work and play. Less now than when I was younger, when I used my mouse 12+ hours per day. (Got my first microcomputer around 1984.) The key is to support your elbow. Use only your hand. You can adjust mouse tracking to allow fine movements of the hand to generate gross movements of the mouse. I estimate that 1.5 inches movement of my hand produces over 12 inches movement of the mouse pointer, a factor of 8. Text editing takes little hand movement. But I do a lot of image editing, which takes a lot of practice to do with a mouse. To patch 8 pixels (about one letter), my hand must not move more than one pixel. Image editing is at least as demanding as text editing. But beware: If you support your elbow you can get a sore elbow. So you need to rest your elbow on a soft surface. Experiment. There are elbow pads available, but you can make your own. I like to keep my entire forearm flat on my desk so that no part of the arm is stressed.

i agree with this. i think it's important to ask why the issue is in the mouse arm and not the other one. i noticed i tend to use my non mouse side (left) arm rest sometimes, whereas i never use the mouse side (right) arm rest. but even when off the rest, the left shoulder maintains proper form. for me, the only difference is height. i optimized for proper elbow height for typing, but the mouse is lower than the keyboard typing surface. that has resulted in a dropped shoulder on my mouse arm. elevating the mouse side arm rest seems to help, just to lift the shoulder position every now and then. lowering the chair height so that the mouse elbow/shoulder is optimal helps a little too. the advice where they tell you the arm should be straight and 90 degrees is not exactly good advice with differing keyboard and mouse height. maybe someone should make an elevated mouse pad?

Mouse shoulder no; mouse wrist yes. I use a trackball and keep my hand (wrist, arm...) in one position too long. Also, I tend to lean on that arm, causing pain. Mainly I just change my position (when I remember).

I’m experiencing some serious pain in my shoulder blade, started 8 days ago…started in my shoulder blade(scapula), now more so in my elbow; there is radiating pain, as if my inner arm is being twisted. My body has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as of August 1916; my body has also been diagnosed with osteoarthritis…I have gone through physical(occupational I think, actually) spring of 2018(approximately) I am not certain what I am now experiencing is the same as experienced approximately 5 years ago… I was hoping to see demonstration of the same stretching and, “massaging” therapies I have been to my GP, was prescribed pain relievers, and while they are active, there is some relief, but that is only managing the pain, not the symptoms

We would have to recommend you see your doctor again and insist on a more thorough exam to see what is causing the pain instead of just masking it with medication.

I have an ergonomic setup at home (Motor desk, keyboard tray, compact keyboard, ergonomic mouse, ergonomic foam cushion for feet) and I still have shoulder pain. I workout 4-5x a week. I've been working from home since Covid but do go into the office a few days out of the week and I only seem to have pain while I'm working at home, I don't have this shoulder pain when I'm in the office on computer. Could this be because of muscle weakness and endurance?

Wow, almost the same situation here! I replaced my desk, chair, keyboard, and mouse, and still have pain in my mouse shoulder. I've raised the desk, lowered the desk, basically every combination of rearranging things. But what struck me with your comment was: this all began with work from home, and with recent optional return to office, I started going back twice a week just for change of scenery, and I've noticed that working in the office doesn't irritate my shoulder. This has been boggling my mind and I can't figure it out. Your comment was like 5 months ago, did you figure anything else out / any improvements?

@@TheRealBibwitHarte My condolences, man. I'm still struggling with this. I did change my working mouse to my left hand, and have gotten used to mousing left handed, and it has resulted in improvement, but it's still an issue. At this point, I'm almost convinced that there's like something psychological here, like if working at home it's easier to slouch and naturally fall into bad posture because people aren't looking and you aren't socially aware of the environment. What I have noticed is that at the office, with people around, I don't fall into that pattern, but at home alone, every so often I'll stop and realize, "whoa I've slid way forward in my chair over the past hour, very slowly" and then I'm sitting all screwed up. I have to admit though that things *have* improved since just becoming more conscious of being upright and alert even at home. It's still painful with that dull, burning, aching pain in the shoulder, but if I were to graph this thing out over the past year, I'm hopeful that it's entering a downward trend. The issue is that it doesn't go away completely, and sometimes the pain can be the worst it's ever been, but occasionally now I get periods where there is no pain. I'm assuming I've screwed up my shoulder and shoulder blade area so bad with bad posture over like 30 years, that it's *slowly* starting to heal, but it's gonna take a lot of time. I was in the movie theater last night watching a movie, and I realized, for the first time in like 3 years since Covid/WFH started, I was enjoying the movie without pain. But then that night, the pain was as worse as it's ever been. I can only assume though that by getting these flashes of painlessness, I'm headed in the right direction. I will say in terms of stretches, I *finally* found ones that are starting to feel effective for me (after years of watching generic "relieve neck pain this way!" videos), and that for me has been "thoracic mobility" stretches. This area of stretches focuses on rotating the upper back and digging into the shoulder blades. My god, it feels so good to me, and doing them at the peak of pain provides actually tangible relief. It's kind of weird to me that my shoulder is what's killing me and this seems to be what's effective, but I can only assume through nerves and shit (I'm not a doctor, lol), it's all connected, and so maybe this shoulder blade pain is what's causing the shoulder pain for me. In short, I'm not out of the woods yet, but just my update.

I was born with unequal shoulder blades; not sure if that has created my shoulder problems; for me, repetitive motion does create stresses on muscles and joints.

My grandfather had a knob on his car’s steering wheel. I thought it was useful before power steering. Without power boost, the gear ratio had to be lower and that meant more turns of the steering wheel to get the same driving wheel angle. The knob came in handy when driving around town, making 90 degree turns at corners. Grandpa could, with the knob, spin the steering wheel through the necessary rotation more quickly and easily than the hand over hand method.

I never thought of that, but yeah, you're probably using a stand-up computer console all day, right? I use a computer at work all day, so I know that's how I developed it (and because it gets worse when I type a lot). Has it gotten any better with exercise, particularly these exercises?
