These shoulder strengthening exercises with a resistive band are a great way to strengthen your shoulder after an injury or surgery. Read Doctor Jo’s blog post about this video at www.askdoctorjo...
A great way to rehab your shoulder is to do exercises with a resistive band. They come in many different colors so make sure the one you have is the right resistance for you. They can be used if you have been diagnosed with shoulder tendonitis, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, or if you are recovering from a surgery.
The first exercise is going to be rows or scapular retraction. You can use your feet as an anchor. You want to keep your elbows in close to your body and make a rowing motion. Try to squeeze your shoulder blades together when you pull back. Make sure you are using a slow controlled motion.
The next exercise is going to be punches or scapular protraction. Wrap the band around you, and keep your arms straight in front of you. Punch forward, but try not to bend your elbows.
Now you are going to hold the band in front of you and put your thumbs up on top. Keep your elbows bent by your sides. This exercise is external rotation. Pull your hands apart, but try not to pull your elbows away from your sides.
The final exercises are going to be performed standing. Try to keep your arm straight the whole time and don't bend your elbows. Your thumb is going to be pointed upwards. You are going do put your arm out at a 45 degree angle which we call scaption. Then you are going to do abduction which is out to the side.
The last two are front and back which are flexion and extension. You don't need to raise the band way above your head. You can bring it to a 90 degree angle which is where your arm is parallel to the floor.

You're welcome!! Sounds like you might have an impingement. Usually the referred pain is down the side of the arm. If you are getting better, keep it up! Sometimes it takes a long time to heal. The reason for not going above 90 degrees is to avoid more irritation into the impingement area. Good luck!!

Hi there, thank you sooo much! I had a AC separation (fell off a bike pretty violently, my collarbone dislocated and went up about an inch). Had a surgery (with tightrope) and now I'm in rehabilitation phase. I'm gonna do exactly these exercises beside ROM ones when home. Very detailed, down to earth, concise and helpful video. Keep on the goob job and cheerz from Croatia! :)

Thanks Dr Jo for the suggested views. I have been working on strengthening my shoulder with all these exercises except the modified push up. Sadly, I fear I may be looking at surgery soon! The exercises hurt still, but when relaxed my arm pulls out of the socket. PT has had me working through the pain to get stronger. I am getting stronger for daily activities, but just sitting gravity pulls my arm out of place. Sleeping is hard because I feel it pull forward or backwards depending how I'm laying. Very frustrating! It has been almost 4 months. Thank you for any suggestions! And thank you for your videos!! Julie

You're welcome! Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to have surgery :-( I had shoulder surgery about 3 years ago. It was an injury I had been dealing with for a decade trying to "fix it." I got my shoulder as strong as I could right before the surgery, and my recovery went very well. As soon as I woke up from the surgery, I felt better than I had in years. The stronger and more flexible you can be before, the better it will be afterwards. Good luck with everything!

Hi Dr Jo! Well, it is 11 weeks after I had my shoulder surgery (rotator cuff & multi-directional instability). Surgery was successful! I just have the frustration of rehab. I do all my exercises and do feel a little stronger, but my flexibility is a problem. I'm told it is because the Dr had to tighten up my ligaments to correct the instability. Do you have any suggestion for improving flexibility? I stretch with the door frame and bands right now. I'm also told my shoulder is not tracking correctly. What am I able to do to correct this issue? Thank you for any suggestions!! Julie

Hi. Doctor Jo. A bunch of videos have been helpful for me a lot. And i have some questions. First let me explain my state now. I got shoulder dislocation on my right arm two months ago in China when i was traveling. So i went to doctor to relocate my shoulder within 5 hours as i remember and i had relaxed for a week at China without using my right hand at all, taking some stuff that make my shoulder fasten into the side of my body. And then i came back to my country, Korea, and just keep not using for 2 weeks. Later, i felt painful and worried about my shoulder and then i went to doctor and i got a lot of medicines which are Taligen Tab, Terilax XL Tab, Brodase Tab and Almagate Tab. 500mg for the amount of almost 1 month and get some therapies such as applying hot pack for 30 minutes and kind of electronic stimulation. And i did exercise for rehabilitation following my doctor's instruction. i had done like that for 1 month. After that, i went to China again for 2 weeks to see my girlfriend and i just quit to have rehabilitation. However i had used my arm in daily life for that 2 weeks. And then i came back again to Korea. Now i stopped taking medicines but started again to do exercise for rehabilitation with applying hot pack by watching your informative videos. That is my condition now. So my question is 1. Do you think i can get recovered without medicines? 2. Which video should i watch and follow for the first time when i follow your way of strengthening shoulder? 3. it has been for exact 2 months now and now i feel my recovery progress isn't quite satisfied. I really want to work out like lifting and soccer. So how long usually has the recovery been taken to get fully recovered? Thank you so much for reading such a long writing!! PS. i read and understood your disclaiming alert totally. so don't worry about that. just i want to get your grateful advice!! Thank You!!
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 7 лет назад
I'm glad some of the videos have been helpful. Yes, I think you can get better without the medication. You shouldn't need them at this point anyway. Probably the best video to start with would be this one: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/shoulder-instability-exercises As far as how long to recover, I really don't know without getting to evaluate you, but probably not too much longer. Good luck!

Thank you for putting these videos online, they have really helped me. My shoulder pain has gotten alot better, but I still feel a little pain going down the side of my arm to my elbow, in the middle deltoid area. Any ideas? Also what is the reason for not going above shoulder level?
@Frankiethenomad
@Frankiethenomad 7 лет назад
Thank you, Dr. Jo, both of your rotator cuff exercises have brought me so much relief and I've only been doing it for two days. I am finally going to stick to this and do it a few times per week. I can't sleep because of the strained rotator cuff. Question how many times per week do you recommend doing these exercises? Is there such a thing with doing them too many times?
@AskDoctorJo

You're welcome! Since they are rehab exercises and not weight lifting exercises, you can do them every day. I am glad they are helping. Good luck.

Thanks! I recommend doing them all at one time. You want to mobilize to get the joint loosened up, then stretch to get the muscles loosened up, and finally strengthen in the new range you have gained from the others. Yes, I would do them every day, and depending on where you are in your injury, twice a day if possible. Probably 2-3 sets of 10-15 reps. If they are easy, then you can increase the band. Good luck!

Hello Doctor Jo, A big follower of u from India, one week ago while swimming in the sea,met with an accident and got dislocated my shoulder. Can u suggest some exercises that i should follow post completion of treatment for strengthening and to minimizing any re-occurrence. Thanks in advance.

Thanks! Did you have surgery, or just conservative treatment to heal?
