This is the best tutorial I've seen on shuv its! My shuv its are not 100% consistent yet, but one thing that has helped me go from about 5% makes to about 50% makes, is using my front foot to kick the board just a bit as well. This not only makes the spin be faster which helps me not have to jump as high in order to give time for the board to spin, but it also helps me a lot in controlling where the axis for spin is. If I kick with my front foot, it forces the board to spin somewhere in the middle of both feet and I avoid having it spin on the back wheels or shoot forward. I think Sarah is doing this too, you can see her front foot kick forward slightly on the shuv its at the end of the video, and I do believe she mentions this motion in other vids. Oh, I also noticed this helps keep my front foot closer to the board, and that makes it easier because I can focus more on my back foot's landing since my front foot is almost certainly going to land on the board already. I also try to lift my front foot a tenth of a second before my right foot as that makes the kick and rotation easier for me, it kinda takes care of the pushing down of my back foot as the board is already in that position when I do this and then the flick is smoother when I get this right, it also pushes the board up into my front foot making easier to kick it forward. Sorry for the long comment, but hopefully it helps someone someday 😅
You are developing a bad habit that way. Think of this trick as passing the tail to your front foot with a spring/pressure like feel. It's all about timing the pressure you exert between the tail and the middle of yiur deck. With shuvits, you begin the scoop putting pressure on the tail while your front foot is still on, wich accumulates tension (this only lasts fraction of a second) Then you release the pressure with a subtle hop from the front foot, wich makes your back toes scoop the board like a spring. The better you get at timing and feeling this, the less force you need to shuvit. Ollies work exactly the same: you put pressure on the tail before you release your font foot weight, wich makes the pop feel more like releasing a spring, rather than just kicking it down. I don't know if it makes any sense as I wrote it.
@@roachcuca3190 I think what you wrote makes sense, and I can definitely try it. 👍🏼 The thing I'm trying to wrap my head around is, if I do it like that, it sort of makes sense if I jump straight up with my front foot. But, if I have to jump forward a bit to land on the board then I feel like as soon as I lift my front foot the board will still attach to it because the board will spring up along with it, so I'll still be kicking it forward in a way whether I intend to or not. I don't know if I can lift my front foot fast enough where it will stop making contact with the board before I start rotating it. Also, if I do develop this bad habit, which other tricks could it affect down the line? I ask this because if you say for example that it will make kickflips harder later because of X and Y, then that will certainly motivate someone like me to change my technique. Otherwise I might end up preferring landing the trick the wrong way than getting frustrated the right way 😅 I do appreciate the feedback and advice 👍🏼
First skate tutorial I’ve seen use a tech deck as part of the explanation 👌 great visual aid and detailed explanation! (Edit) just went to the skatepark today and was like.. what was that tip again? Because I’m working on my shuvits.. ah yes, making sure to jump with both feet at the same height. First try, one of the cleanest I’ve landed. 👌
This is the most helpful skate video I've ever watched. I appreciate how you talk to us as people and walk us through what you were struggling with and how you fixed it. Great job!
Hey, I just started skateboarding at 35 together with my 10 y/o daughter. I've been watching ALOT of tutorials lately trying to do the damn shove it, but I'm stuck right there only landning with one foot and having the board move away from me alot. Now, finally, I understand why! I'll add your great tips! Feels like I can learn this the proper way now. Thanks for breaking it down so well.
That's awesome! Especially that you're learning with your daughter. What a fun thing to do together! Good luck getting closer to shove its! 💪 Glad my tutorial was helpful!
I’m getting back into skateboarding at 28 years old, I used to skate when I was 8-13. Even then I could never consistently land a shove it and getting back into it now, it felt just as impossible. Within 10 minutes of watching this video, I landed a shove it 10+ times, 3 in a row at one point. Thank you Sarah! I’m subbed and ready to learn from you!!
PROTIP: dont use a sock for your back foot. Apply chapstick between your toes. When in the air count to 2 (1....2). this will keep the board in the air for atleast 2 seconds. The higher you count the longer you can stay in the air to adjust your footing. Happy Skating!
I seriously hope you're in/working towards a fantastic job in engineering, kinesiology or something physics-related because your comprehension of fundamentals is awe-inspiring, truly. If videos like this existed back when I got my first board; I probably wouldn't have given up so quickly. The how and why are so important and it's best to instill good habits from the beginning so you don't have to reset muscle memory later like with anything. I know this video is old but keep making these!
Haha if I could go back to school and start over, I would definitely go for something like that 🤔 Wish I realized how much I liked it back then! Glad I can put at least the fundamentals together though. Totally agree with getting good habits from the beginning. Stoked you're enjoying the videos!
@@SarahParkMatott I feel like we never tend to enjoy things we're forced to learn. I think only when we're passionate about something do these skills come into play 🤔. Either way, as an older skater; your step-by-step breakdowns are really helping me build confidence on my board so thanks a lot! I can't wait for your channel to get the true recognition it deserves.
this is the best breakdown for a shove it i’ve seen on youtube!! i was having some of the same problems you were having and these tips definitely helped me figure out what i was doing wrong. now i just wish it wasn’t 1am so i could actually put them to use hahahah
Yeah it’s the BEST shuvit tutorial out there. I can’t commit to landing cuz I can never predict where the board will go, I have ZERO consistency. I’ll definitely try those tips next week when I get home. I wish I wasn’t travelling for work lol
You have as much in-depth explanation as Aaron Kyro if not more. I’m very surprised you don’t have more subscribers that you very much deserve. Keep up the brilliant work!
These tips are great! A small tip that helped me get better consistency was making sure to bend my legs before the kick. Idk why but I was doing it straight legged until someone pointed it out to me.
Hi Sarah, I really appreciate how much work you put into your videos - they’re super helpful. With your tips I was able to land my first shove it yesterday! I do have a question about jumping/balance/timing. I struggle with jumping with my weight distributed evenly between both feet + the pushing motion. I either shove slightly too soon with my front foot still on the board, so it under rotates, or I lift my front foot too early and then the board rockets out from under me during the shove motion. Could you please explain how you have your weight distributed during the jump and the timing involved between both feet?
Thank you! First of all, I'm really glad to hear that. And congrats on your first shove it! 💪 This is an interesting question. I always try to keep my weight centered between my feet, and I don't really make an effort to jump off one foot first. It's more like hopping off both feet, but the front foot springs up while the back foot keeps pushing back. It's also difficult to give good advice when you can't actually see it. (Feel free to send a clip to my instagram dms.) But, there are a few things that you might be able to try. 1. I always recommend hippie jumps to work on jumping on the board. I absolutely love them. I think they are super under-rated, even if you just do them to warm up. They help with both the jump and the land. Warming up the ankles. Jumping with your weight evenly distributed. 2. It also might have to do with just how much power or speed you need to put into the shove foot. And this is something that takes a lot of time to develop a feel for, but also the muscles for. Sometimes we think we are doing something wrong, but we actually just need to build up a little more appropriate muscle / coordination for. 3. If you think your front foot is catching the board or not getting off fast enough, you can try to pull the foot placement back to the heelside edge of the deck just a little bit. Sometimes that helps too. I would recommend experimenting with these and seeing if there is any improvement. But don't worry if it doesn't click right away. It took me months before the shoves were actually consistent.
I think I have the scoop down (for fakie shuvs - I assume same tips apply to that too) but I can only land with one foot and I can't keep the board under me. I will try these tips next time, thank you!!! 👀 (also your griptape is cute af)
Similar tips apply! Depends on the forces at work 😅 But, I hope the tips will help you work on it in your next session! (And thank you! Can't go wrong with Pokemon grip art 🥰)
This stupid trick has eluded me for ages because I just COULD NOT commit. Watched this video and once I realized how much easier it was once I kicked directly back I landed 20 in a row like it was nothing. THANK YOU
Crazy story, I searched how to do shove-its and I literally just saw your thumbnail and saw the position where you are over your front foot more and I landed it immediately. Thank you
Great tips! My shoveits arer not consistent, can't get board to spin in front of me, it goes a bit narrow to right. Hope this will help! Can't wait to go out and try it and not to slam every third time 😅😅
I didn’t grow up with RU-vid tutorials I grew up meeting different kids from the high school or town I grew up in and we all skated we all taught each other we all shredded those learning years were the best years
This is best part of RU-vid, free exchange of information and insights. Thank you for taking the time to break the tricks down. I feel like I have a better shot at landing the shuvit now!
I finally landed a shove it tonight! I know it's not supposed to be that hard a trick but I'm mad happy about it. It only took a couple weeks of trying the same thing over and over based on a different half remembered tutorial video, which I realize now was probably not the best way to go about it lmao. Your advice to put your toe over the lip and experimenting with the exact placement from there is what finally made it click. The first one I nearly landed right as I was getting fed up trying. My back foot landed on the tail and it took me a second to realize what had happened, I wish I could see my face lol. I immediately tried again, my feet landed right on the bolts, and right as I landed, my hand came down, accidentally hit my keys in my pocket, and my car unlocked. So I took that as permission to go home for the night! Anyhow, just wanted to say thank you for the video, even if it's a few years old at this point! I'll definitely be checking out more of them now.
ayy that's awesome! The shove it is plenty hard of a trick. Glad you got it after all that hard work 💪 it's always such a stellar moment when something "clicks" and starts to make sense
Holy crap!! Thank you so much for this tutorial i watched countless videos and this one BY FAR helped the most. Thank you so much you deserve so much more subscribers
Fixing the kick/shove tip was huge for me. Just landed my first shove it after 3 45 minute sessions. Hoping by 10 hours to get it consistently rolling. Thank you 🙏
it took me until this video to realize that the board is supposed to leave the ground... i thought you were supposed to kick it really hard to overcome friction lmao
Love this channel, I watch other channels but you explain all the tricks down made really easy and fun. Even if the videos are long they are fun to watch and I enjoy every minute. Learning Spanish is hard for me, so is skateboarding but I never give up. I started late and will be 40 in June but my goal is to be as good as you. I may be 40 but I feel like 20. Thanks for doing these videos for us, we really appreciate your teaching style, it's easy and fun. Do you teach Spanish 😁. Your videos boost confidence. My goal is to be at professional level before I turn 45yrs old. I feel I'm at level 2 out of 10 and my goal is to be at 4 before the end of this year. So happy I found your channel. Thanks from Chicago IL.
Thank you! I'm really glad to hear that. I do realize the videos are long 😂 So, I am continually trying to make them better and easier to watch. So, really happy to hear that! And well, with a positive attitude like yours, there is really no choice but to improve 💪 Mindset is half the battle! Put in the time, and you'll jump from level 2 to 4 before you know it! I don't teach Spanish, but I used to teach Korean (and English) if you have any questions there 😂 I wish you lots of shredding! And my thanks to Chicago IL :D
I used to use fit guy skate shin guards sold by decomposed skateboards. But, I typically just stick to soccer shin guards now. I just grabbed a small pair of nike ones from a local sports shop. I do have a vid on my gear here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--vaZTcF3AP4.html there are links to them
These are suuuuuuuch good tips, I'm gonna try them tonight! I'm definitely at that sometimes-landing-them stage with my shuvits. I also LOVE your explanations! :)
how long have you been been practicing it? I know it took me months to even start and get a feel for the strength 🤔 it's really a much harder trick than a lot of people make it sound like
oof the jump from grass to concrete can be a big one. How many hours of skate time do you think you've gotten in since starting? edit: since starting skating, not since starting the trick
Hi Sarah! I've always wanted to try skateboarding but my mom never got me one as we're from India and we don't have any skatepark (oh don't even think about crusing in the street :( you how it is haha) or many other skaters in our state. But two weeks ago after turning 20 I decided to buy myself a board and stared practicing at an even surface in an apartment garage all by myself watching RU-vid tutorials. I have to admit it's one of the best things ever. Gradual progression is more addictive than anything else. I mainly watch your channel because of your simple breakdowns of skate tricks. Seriously keep it up girl! You really help a lot. I can't stress that enough. Now on day 10 i can push(not properly though) but i am kinda comfortable with my board, i can kickturn, ground flip, get over cracks and do tiny ollies (like literally you can't even see the board pop). Oh and i can't rotate the board 180 when trying shuv its, i mean i do keep my stance the way you explained but the wheels don't get off the ground, they kinda drag and make screeching sounds. Any tip would be helpful. Sorry for the long comment hehe.
No problem, that's amazing! Welcome to skateboarding, Harsha! And I'm glad my channel has been so helpful. To get the wheels to come off the ground, you probably need to push "down" a little more. Not just straight back. That balance of down and back helps get the wheels up. It also helps if you start a little heavy on both feet--put pressure down into the board and then jump up and push back to release that pressure. This is actually a concept I am going to add to a future video! It's hard to explain without the visual! But you got it. It takes months of practice to start to get anyway 💪
im landing with one feet on the nose and the other o the ground, sometimes i land with both feet on the nose(when i say nose i mean the direction that the nose would be if i landed it)and the board always goes to my right(im regular),what should i do?should i jump to the right?also i tryed to shove it foward like you did in the beggining of the video to make my board not go so much to the right but that dindt worked at all,i also tryed leaning more to my right but that also dindt work, can you help me pleasee :((
That's also a pretty common issue. For your body to land where the nose is and your board to be behind the back foot. I would say to first take a video of yourself doing the shove it and see if the back wheels leave the ground when you do the shove. Sometimes, it's actually because the back wheels grip the ground and hold the skateboard in place. I do mention it somewhere in the video. I would check to see if that's what is happening first! You can work on it by trying to shove slightly more down and back when you do the shove it. Sometimes a little more strength down can help bring those trucks up. If that's not the problem, feel free to send me a dm on instagram. We can look at it.
@@SarahParkMatott i can do it 1 every 10 times stationary,i will try to get more consistent with it stationary and then try while rolling at 1mph lol,if this dosent work i will dm you
