I screwed up and left salt cartridges in my Vigilante. Discovered rust around and in the barrel. Has this happened to anyone else? What’s the best method for repairing the damage? 0:15

I'll take a look at that and see if I can figure out a remedy. Any ideas out there? I really only used the vigilante for the video and turned it back to shooting pellets after so I did find some rust but not too bad, I am guessing running all the lead through the barrel may have cleared or maybe coated the bore a little. 🤔

Alright guys , found a pretty cool way to do easy reloads, no paper no glue, no cleanup after the cartridge is used. It’s sort of based on a comment I read about hardening the salt with a wet paper towel……. You take a damp) make sure it’s damp and not too wet ) paper towel and place the cartridge on the flat side down on the paper towel. You fill all the holes with sand and compress them down with your finger. Clean off all the sand so that is flush with the cartridge. Then you make simple syrup solution ( sugar water ) heat water in a pan and add a bunch of sugar until it’s a syrup and all dissolved, then use a small syringe to apply a small drop over each hole each. Then compress it again with your finger tip add a little more salt and repeat. The flip it over ( the salt shouldn’t fall out due to soaking up a little moister from the paper towel towel) and add small drip to the flat side. Brush off all the excess salt and let them sit for 4-6 hours to completely harden. Make sure to let them sit long enough. It should be dry looking and white again not the “gray wet “. First time I did it I tried to use it too soon and the salt was not hardened yet and fell out in the Gunn. After enough time the Salt will be compact and firm enough to stay in the cartridge and won’t shake loose as it rotates in the gun through each round. I even dropped it on the counter from about 1 foot no issues. Obviously you have to be more careful then the tissue paper method but this way is very fast once you get it down and get rolling and there is no cleanup afterward. The cartridges are basically ready to go again after using them, maybe a rinse in the sink and that’s it. Worked awesome and pinched through the tin foil just as effective as factory. I used kosher salt but I’m going to try regular table salt next. We’ll see ……. PS. The repeat packing and 2nd drop is not necessary, only if you want the cartridge full. You’ll be fine with one drop each side. Also , I am in no way discrediting all the hard work being done on this channel to perfect the reload method and all the trail error. The tissue paper cutout glue stick works great too. It’s better too when transporting and you don’t have to worry about the salt loosening up and falling out. I’m just throwing another option out there I found worked pretty good.

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing. I have tried with just salt and water and it worked really well. So far it has been the only method to hold up in the umarex TR 50 that I have been working with. I haven't gotten good stick with any other method yet. I have also done the shredder with just adding a drop or two (depending on how much salt I use) of H2O and it worked really well, solid. The sand component is of interest as I have been looking for alternates to all of the salt for use out in the yard/garden. Even the simple syrup shouldn't be in any quantity to become an ant issue. Way to think outside the box and then take it to the next level 👍🏽 My brain has been stuck on repeating the factory paper covering from what we are buying out of the factory, but this is great. I may do some durability tests on this, as I was concerned about breaking up when I throw them in the workbench drawer. This is why I haven't gone this route in the past, but after seeing how the .50 cal holes were pretty solid in the Umarex, I think the little Shred-er might be perfectly fine, even with a little abuse.
@jm4472

@@justanotheravgjoe1314 ya I would suggest also making sure to use as little sugar water as possible , only a small drop is needed and make sure the sugar water is not too thick. Not a thick as a syrup actually

@@justanotheravgjoe1314 I would love to see a video comparing the Umarex versus the shredder, as I own several guns, and several bug-a-salt 3.0 guns. I'm considering getting a shredder, but having to supply it with two types of paid resource made me reconsider… But I'm starting to come around again after seeing your efforts to cheaply reload it. Love seeing all of the ideas coming out of this project! I have a few of my own, but I will look look at the 5.0 video to see if it's already covered there.

The tracing paper and Elmers glue was more of a pain. I used 2.0 inch surgical paper tape like 3M's micropore or Dynarex. The single problem here is to protect the sticky until you're ready. I stuck the tape from the roll onto parchment paper for baking which has a silicone release agent added. Use the large punch to make the 1.25 circle and then the 5/8th punch to make the center hole. Then it's just peel and stick - fill the salt - peel and stick. You can, if you wish, use a #11 Xacto blade tip to make a small slit in the center of the tape over the hole on both sides to introduce a weak spot. The tiny slit will not leak salt and in any case the salt will stick to some salt grains. ALTERNATIVE - If you want a real killer load use POPPY SEEDS instead of salt. Even at 5ft they'll tear up almost any bug/insect. Only negative is they're not inside the house friendly
@justanotheravgjoe1314
@justanotheravgjoe1314 3 года назад
I agree the papers can be a bit of a pain. I have used the micropore tape in the past and I did like the application. I just find the clean up to be a pain after shooting when recycling the clips/cartridges. To me it seems like it is a choice of hassle at the beginning or at the end. I have kind of gotten used to the tracing paper so has been a little easier, and cleanup is just dropping in a cup of water, and everything just falls off. Poppy seeds is a great idea. I had thought of trying sesame seeds, but they are a bit big and I was wondering if the rodents would be attracted to that. Also Tyson Edwards let me know about a double hole punch he found on eBay that cuts the center and has the outer at 1.25. Regardless of material choice, it eliminates half of the prep process. RU-vid doesn't didn't let him post the eBay link for some reason, but you can search for it on eBay with this description. Run a 3/16th inch drill bit through the carts and down the barrel where the carts touch. You can load more salt, and get that obstruction (the thing they put so you can't shoot much else other than salt) out of the way. That little piece of plastic is just an obstruction that would be pretty dramatic in a real pew pew. Night and day difference in performance. I like which may be the final mod to loading the cart's. I like it! Putting my amazon order in now.
@justanotheravgjoe1314
@justanotheravgjoe1314 3 года назад
I was curious if that was a safety measure or for breaking up clumped up salt. Maybe both. My only concern would be how soft the plastic lining of the barrel is, with what would be sent down it.🤔

@@justanotheravgjoe1314 I also removed the split in the barrel. I shot a .177 pellet down the barrel. It even fit in the mag. It did score the inside of the barrel on one side but still shoots salt really well. I also substituted diatomaceous earth instead of salt to kill scorpions.

@justanotheravgjoe1314 3 года назад
@@skip63 I have wondered about the pellet through the barrel, I wasn't sure how the plastic lining would hold up, does it look like something you wouldn't want to do repeatedly, or does it look like it would be solid? I haven't removed the divider in mine as I still want to be able to use the stock Shred-er in comparison to other items, I've been using the vigilante for that. I just can't get myself to spend the $125 for another shred-er to keep one stock. If you catch some video on scorpions I would love to see that in action. I don't have any around me.

@JustAnotherAvgJoe. I don't know how you feel about punching the holes but I found that the paper got hung up in the punch and it was just a pain to deal with folding, ragged cuts etc.. So what I did was put 10 sheets of the tracing paper in between two sheets of printer/copier paper and just used the larger punch. You can staple the perimeter of three sides of the stack of papers and trim off row after row and use most of the whole sheet of paper. This made really quick work of punching and really nice clean cut stacks of paper discs. I don't even bother with the smaller punch, I just use an xacto knife and cut the inside hole out. Just make sure to separate the copier/printer paper from the tracing paper when you are done. I just used 10 sheets to experiment, you may be able to use more?
@justanotheravgjoe1314
@justanotheravgjoe1314 3 года назад
That sounds like it will work great. I Haven't had too much issue with the larger punch if I have at least 6 sides folded tight, the smaller punch is the one that catches for me. I don't actually reload many of these, mostly for the video and testing, I generally still buy the factory loads for regular use. Your method would be awesome for the assembly line reload. 👍🏽. It would be like the pregressive reloading press for the shredder. 😁

It is definitely a lot more work than just buying the factory loads. I personally use the factory loads most of the time, unless doing a reload video or testing custom loads like the alternative load video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GHarFne2JX0.html I worked on the reloading with viewers help, mainly because people were asking if it could be done. Then we worked on trying to get it as close to factory as I could make them. There are some simpler methods, like just adding salt (a little corn starch helps) and a drop or two of water. A little messier, but it seems to work fine and is pretty fast and easy, just not as pretty. Kind of the same argument for reloading real ammo, you can save some money (assuming you can get primers at non black market prices.) but time and effort is a huge factor. I think it is more of a hobby/puttering than an actual cost savings. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
