Shrub Removal ► Small Tear Out ► Removing 2 Shrubs With Brandon's Help!

This morning Brandon and I went to a customers house to remove 2 shrubs that he wanted taken out. This was a tiny little landscape / shrub removal job but it was good to have Brandon there to help me out.
These 2 dwarf alberta spruces were ready to be ripped out and eventually may get replaced with something else. We were going to use the truck to just yank them out, but the root ball wasn't that bad on these. All it took was a little muscle and we were able to rip them out.
I will definitely say that Landscaping and Lawn Care are 2 different fields of work! You gotta know what you're doing with both. Most of you guys know I am just getting my feet wet with landscaping work, and this job is no different. Thanks again to Brandon for helping me out, even as simple as it was.

HI Brian, Well you won't believe this but it works for me. I dig around the base then use my snowplow hook( Myers plow) and lift with that no straining. :) .... But I know you can't do since your plow is contained... Another is the back of the truck and pull once you know no wires or downpipes....

I pulled a small shrub and ended up breaking the main sewer line or to the street. Added an extra 2 hours digging out and repairing the pipe. Didn't think to check for water lines before hand which would have saved me all that time. Remember, water lines "usually" are on a straight line from the meter to the house, and the sewer line is parallel to it.

truck, strap & a 4x4. loop one end around the base, stand 4x4 upright at about degress angle towards bush. Run strap over top of 4x4 and back to truck. pull on strap slowly and it will pull bush straight up out of ground like a lever.

Brian... never stand in the line of fire of the axe head end of an axe when someone else is swinging it. Axe heads do come off of their handle from time to time, and folks have been hurt and/or killed that way, not to mention the whole axe can also just slip out of the swingers hands. Blessings!

Brian you 100% need a highlift/farm jack, that would have been 1 person 20-30 mins. You can take a farm jack places heavy equipment cant go, add a mattock/axe and digging pry bar you do wonders in short time. Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. - Archimedes Price here would cost 70-80 just in dump fees then add labor/drive time/risk so i agree 100 per is fair imo.

One of the best way to pull any shrub or stump is straight up, that’s where a dingo or loader tractor works great. Truck and chains or strap is good but messy. If that was a cap Yew that size you would’ve needed the truck in low range to move it.
@zerocool212121
@zerocool212121 6 лет назад
Also a great easy method is using a 4x4 post when using a truck and it will be your fulcrum and come strait up easy, that or a farm jack must have for removals.

I strap the tie straps to my scag and pull it out. If its bigger input tension on it and use the axe on the back side to cut some of the roots to loosen them up. No need to use truck that's overkill and too much time unhitching.

Chains were always a last resort for me. Straps are far superior. I would have just used the truck, but I'm not a young buck anymore. Yeah you have to account for the unexpected. I once bid a back concrete stoop amd patio demo. Looked straightforward. Couldn't get any machinery back there so it was down to jackhammers. Turns out the stoop and patio were FULL of rebar AND grid mesh. It was awful. Lost my butt on that one, but that was such an unusual way to pour that type of thing that it never crossed my mind.

I usually tie a chain around the base of the tree, and either hook it up to my truck or if its small enough, my ride on mower! Remember to cut the roots though or else it'll be harder to pull out. I usually use a pair of fiskars to go down into the dirt and they work like a charm
@KenMrKLC
@KenMrKLC 6 лет назад
I would charge $125-$165 for that... rip and dispose... Still need to account for driving to dump the shrubs and disposal fee. As small of a job as it is you should consider driving to the job, time spent on job and time to dump.

I see that you are going for the entertainment method of removing the Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea Glauca 'Conica') How would you have liked to have made another $250-$300 removing the "Tree" with care? You don't always need to kill trees because the customer doesn't like or want them any more. Dig all the way around them, then under them taking care to leave as much soil as possible on the root ball. Use spades but sharpen the edge and that will help cut through some of the Tree roots and Loppers to cut too big for the spades to cut through. You will also need burlap to wrap the rootball and a couple of 2x6 inch boards to help pry the tree loose, one way then the next. Until you get the burlap wrapped around the roots keeping as much of the soil covering the roots. Use cord, rope or strong string to keep the burlap cover over the rootball. Replant it asap or heel it in temporarily or plant them in big planters with good drainage and a good potting mix etc. Too much work? Go to a big Garden Center or Plant nursery and find out how much they charge for a mature Dwarf Alberta Spruce. Most of these Tree farms, Plant nurseries have Trees planted in fields in lines where they are taken care of until it's time for them to dug up, wrapping the rootball or potting into containers before being shipped. Yes some Nurseries use machines and Tree spades on the bigger trees but they can be dug by hand just like the way we used to dig them. Some customers want an instant garden and the Landscaper needs to use Mature Trees and Shrubs and they are willing to pay and those one gallon or five gallon pots are just too small. Then when you find out the price of countless Trees & Shrubs you have been dumping then you will wish you had saved some of those healthy mature trees from the dump. That's just my opinion after seeing what people throw away over the years....

Not if you manage to pull the rootsystem and gutters aswell. Then it becomes a huge loss. Especially if the drainpipe gets torn

I know prices vary based on location but charging more then $100 per shrub is a con. No way that shoulda been billed at $425.
