SHTF Intro To Radio Direction Finder "Seek & Destroy" Part 2 

Thanks for this video. Myself and a friend tracked down a stolen radio which was tuned to the town cctv control room. The person was transmitting and listening to radio comms. With the help of this video we found the location. The house and the room where he was sat. A knock on the door retrieved the radio.

That was better than some of the movies I've watched lately. Good job. Thanks for spending the time to record that.

Outstanding demonstration. I'm 61 and have been a public safety bench & field tech/tower erector/broadcast engineer most of my life, and have used the same tactics on numerous occasions, to locate RFI and to map propagation. RDF we used in Iraq chasing moving targets that was the funniest QRF missions I ever did it was like a rat race through the city lead Humvee leading the way while four others chased them

Having a variable or several fixed attenuators helps tremendously. Unplugging untenna from the radio may also help to pinpoint a location once you get very close to the suspected transmitter.

That isn't how a Doppler direction finder works. The antennas are electronically rotated in a circle by sequentially connecting them to your receiver. Doppler shift varies the frequency slightly as the antenna moves toward and away from the source. This induces a tone onto the signal that is heard with an FM radio. The phase of this tone compared to the phase of the antenna rotation tells the equipment the bearing to the signal.A handy method for hunting when the signal gets too strong is to listen on a harmonic (multiple) of the original frequency. The harmonic will be much weaker and will allow you to get bearings up close. Of course, you have to carry another directional antenna for that band.

Just participated in my first fox hunt yesterday. New to radio...just got my tech first of June, passed my General two weeks ago, taking Extra next week. My wife has her Tech. and was working with me. We had a county of space to cover. It took us 1 hour 44 minutes to track the signal down. It was an hour before we were even able to get our first reading. The transmitter was set to only 2 watts. Was an interesting process though. There has been a fox lately that has been illegally transmitting on a large superlink system that includes some 12-14 connected repeaters. The fox has been keying up during conversations, transmitting music, and just generally interfering. They think that they cant be caught, but they are mistaken

Great video, and one comment. The yagi will only have a good directional pattern over a very narrow range of frequencies. I model my yagis that I use for direction finding using 4nec2 software to understand at what frequency the yagi pattern becomes inadequate and then I modify the length of the elements to target the frequency of interest (element spacing not as critical). As an example my yagi designed for 146 MHz needs its elements lengthened about 1.5 inches if I want to use it to still have a great front to back ratio on 136 MHz. I just use alligator clips on the end of the elements to lengthen them (clip them to the elements and then use electrical tape to make sure they stay put). I use 136 MHz a lot when tracking down arcing power poles since this is down in the aircraft band where AM is used, and an AM radio with wide filter allows you to easily hear and track the power line interference once you get reasonably close to it (normally within 0.25 miles of the bad pole, and then when I get very close I normally have to throw in 20 to 30 dB of attenuation).

If the repeater lost phase lock wouldn't the local oscillator be sweeping?

So do you bill the company for having to fix their equipment? Who pays for your time? That took you days to find and would imagine thats not cheap. Does the sharrif department pay you then they go after the company? What was the radio for communicating with the garbage trucks? Imagine what someone could do that was doing this on purpose? They could really take down out infrastructure. That I think would be the most damaging terrorist attack a coordinated attack you can't see and don't understand.

Ramsey is out of that business now. They only do RF shielded boxes for RF & cell phone repairs. All their cool kit stuff is gone now.

K.i.s.s. works well. But when we would find the purp. A ham that is a sherriff. He Would get the docks. For entry. We were not allowed to trespass. Until we had a pass. . And the sherriff.( Back up). Was the best. .once. I played the fox. And fooled hunters by heating up a bridge. Near by. Giving me time to return to base. Un caught.
