Shuffle, Trails, & Slapback: Things to Do With a Delay Pedal

The aim with this little bit of infotainment is to give you some food for thought as to what to do with a delay pedal - a most mysterious and useful gadget.
Here's the ways I utilized it in this clip:
1 - Swung eighth notes. Really cool for getting that ominous, droney Pink Floyd thing. You just gotta watch out that you get the timing right with the track.
2 - Slow, Quiet Guitar Hero Trails. This is the way I use it most often. If you get the mix just right, it fattens up your solos for maximum face-meltivity.
3 - Classic Rockabilly Slapback. A quick, short delay that's almost right on top of the note. Great for, well, classic rockabilly. Also Reggae.

Let me express my admiration for what you do, Sir. And let me thank you. I've been following your channel for several weeks now and I think your content is among the most useful, tasteful and mind-opening guitar stuff on YT. Your lessons aren't just lessons. They help shape and develop something that goes far beyond guitar playing itself. You succeed in conveying an attitude, a way of thinking, a vibe, a spirit that creep into people's playing on a subconscious level before they realize it. It's so valuable. And everything about your videos is so cool - from your armchair, through the window behind you to your relaxed and good-natured way of explaining things. Thank you for your skill and generosity. YT was made for guys like you. All the best from Poland!

Omg thanks so much Marcin! I mention at the end of my "Seńor" video that I used to work with a crew of Polish house painters when I was younger. My mentor was this guy Casey, who always said: "..Eric, remember...you have to do it nice, and good." Those words stick with me to this day! You really get me - I'm not about guitar heroics. I'm much more interested in encouraging people to get more fulfillment out of their relationship with guitar. The notes themselves are magical things, and what a gift it is to be able to play at all!

Best thing about this channel. Eric focuses on getting better at playing guitar, not about how much new stuff we need to buy to sound good. Don't get me wrong, I love all the toys too, its fun. Most of of the time I find my best is with a clean tone, a few good chords, the pentatonic scale, and some fun lyrics. Thank you Eric for keeping us focused on playing instead of buying.

Nice, simple, but very important lesson. Delay and reverb are very useful tools, and actually inspire me to play clean more. Setting the delay up without tap tempo can be tricky until one gets used to it. Still remember playing around with my EH Memory Man trying to get those U2 sounds. It's pretty fun actually.

Fantastic video Eric. I am wondering, I don’t have a time based pedal, how important is stereo in a guitar pedal? I’m looking at a few delay pedals that are stereo, but that drives the price up a lot. I can pick up a cheap mono delay for less. Just wonder what your opinion is. Thank you for your time and am enjoying my Truefire course.

Thanks Eric - inspirational and educational as usual! Nice to see you got yourself the Phase 90 - it's such an iconic sound, isn't it? I can also recommend the Walrus Lillian Phaser - it sounds great too, but has the added benefit of a Mix knob, so you can just add a hint of swirl underneath, for some more subtle movement.

Thanks for the lesson on delay. I'd love to see other lessons on other pedals in the future. I think you might have done a fuzz video a while back, but maybe I'm thinking about another channel. What about a lesson on how you use overdrive, distortion, and fuzz?

Very interesting lesson Eric. While on this subject of effects pedals do you have an opinion on stacking overdrives? Specifically in order to achieve a really gutsy blues tone? I’m thinking Bluesbreakers era Clapton.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 4 года назад
I think that tone actually depends a lot on your speaker. Do you have a cab with a Greenback-type in it? The punchy, gutsy mids of celestion-ish speakers are a huge part of that sound. I love that record. Clapton before '72 was 🔥
@stephenbrumlow931
@stephenbrumlow931 4 года назад
Eric Haugen Unfortunately all I have right now is one of the Boss Katana amps. But I totally agree that the 60s era Clapton sound was killer. I actually think he sounded much better with his Gibsons.

I love to stack my delays. Analog delay set to triplets (they don't all have subdivisions, the fancy ones do) into a digital delay set to quarter notes synced with external tap. It also works with dotted 8th>quarters. So much fun. Never thought of using the "One Of These Days" trick on guitar, which is nuts considering my level of Floyd-tragic. (Idk about USA/Canada, but in Australia, a "Tragic" is someone who is hopelessly obsessed with a particular passion - cricket, chess, Pink Floyd, and so on). Everyone does the "Run Like Hell" dotted 8th, cool to hear someone *not* doing that in a lesson. "Guitar Hero Trails" should be your autobiography title. "Chapter One: Blazing Trails!"

From my understanding and I may be wrong, I may want to invest in an electric guitar because you can't really bend strings like that on an acoustic. Acoustics are great for strumming and fingerpicking, but the resonating licks and string bends you really want an electric. Been teaching myself for the past 5 years on acoustic but for stuff like this I feel I'm really missing out and you want an electric for rock licks.
@EricHaugenGuitar
