Been loyal to M44-7's for about 12 years now and looks like I'll be ordering some of those Jico replacement needles. DJCity did a comparison vid and the Jico's held up pretty well beside the original M44-7's. I will never stop droppin' the needle on my 1's n 2's. Peace to all the Turntablists out there feelin the heartbreak. Keep on.
From JICO: "In order to reduce needle jump by scratch etc., we set the tracking force heavier than genuine Shure’s products. The tracking force for all 4 models is 3.5 - 4.5 g". The same like new ortofon... Not to good cause the one of main reason was a very low record wear. Too bad :/
Sad to see Shure go, but I do really like my Ortofons. I had bought a Shure M44-7 cart to go on my Numark PT01 Scratch deck, once I upgrade the tonearm. However, backup N44-7 stylus prices are nuts and scarce, so might just get a Concorde OM cart for the Numark portable once i wear out the stock stylus.
Actually doing all 3. I have Ortofon Pro needles that are amazing, I use them more than my m447. I just ordered a new pair of M447 stylus, plus I ordered a pair of JICO's. Pre order for Phase DJ is also done.
Any info about some 'new' from SHURE? I think they will present some other product for scratch dj. SHURE M447 was the best system in the world. Using it to scratch to dub/dubstep and jungle - fantastic traction, deep bass and safety for my vinyls. Hope to see some new item as an alternative solution. Big up!
They aren't going anywhere, but it's a shame they dropped the phono line. Thanks for watching this video. Surprised people can still find it after all this time!

If you just use time coded vinyl, you just go ahead and buy the cheapest cartridges, the sound quality is not crucial there. But if your set includes even one real analogue record instead of digital files, then cartridges do matter. Just too many to choose from...Audi-Technica, Ortofon, Goldring, Grado, Numark (lol), Tonar etc. Some are better suited for DJs some less... I don't really think your video gave me an answer as for what the real replacement is. Come on, would I buy a whole new set just because I need some other cartridge? Hell no!
Jico's are good bought 10 used all 10 many gigs. But the look of them I don't like. Also with real vinyl the sound is a little different on the low end. I have checked this over a hundred times. its not bad sound but the bass is not as deep on the kick drums. I tested it between both needles brand new and broken in.still a good needle though its not a dramatic difference.
Shure's going bankrupt. Shame because 30 years ago they used to be a quality company making high quality products, known the world over. However, a series of bad decisions including some failed attempted mergers have left them in a desperate state. It's the same old story. Interesting timing though, seeing as how vinyl is making a comeback. You'd think they'd be doing ok.
I didn't want to believe what I heard. I don't know what I'm going to do. Ortofons are ok I guess but my Technics head shells are a huge part of the look
First my next paycheck I'm going to buy as many motherfuking stylus for my cartridges I'm probably spend about to 300 that should load me up for a minute then you know once I really can't find any more I guess I will try the third party stylus replacement I've also been using the shure M4- 77 for a very long time so yeah it sucks that they are discontinuing one of the most important pieces of gear to a DJ but I will not use a phase and probably will not get a rain 72 or whatever it is it's nothing like spinning on a set of 12s with the shore M4-77..
That's the nature of any spherical stylus. The aim of the design is to improve tracking at the cost of fidelity. The bonus is the highs will wear down slower. For those of us who use timecode this is a non-issue, as the frequency response of the cartridge/stylus is negated since all the audio is played back digitally.
I’m hearing all this stuff about how it’s time to move on from turntables, and that rane 12 and phase are going to take over, but that doesnt sit right with me. I’m a hardcore vinyl person, but my problem is that people are saying all this stuff like vinyls dead, it’s time to move on, look at all this new tech, but fuck, phase hasn’t come out yet and there may be a big problem with it that no ones come across yet. The rane 12s had a disappointing launch and are essentially a copy of the sl dz 1200s which FLOPPED. I don’t see how people can just accept all this stuff when like I said, phase hasn’t come out, and the rane 12s have already had a recall.
lol69_ I feel you! I’d rather stick to my needles and tone arms. I tried to move on to CDJs and controllers, and it works fine, but it’s just not the same. Turntables are the real deal!
The DJ market just isn't enough to justify the manufacturing costs unfortunately. They released an official statement saying they couldn't afford to make them without raising the price by a lot.
That's horse shit, dude we have more DJ's today then we did back in the 1980's by 1000 times fold and i bought my technics 1200's at 300.00 a pieces brand new in 1983. I can tell you what happened, they got scared with the digital market and decided to just get out. A brand new pair of technics 1200's cost you around 1800.00 in these days. There is a lot out there now that does a lot more for way cheaper than technics. SORRY TECHNICS, YA JUST GOT TOO GREEDY!. All these companies now coming out with all this shit and charging an arm and a leg, i will tell you! THEY ARE KILLING THE DJ industry and the newb DJ's don't even realize it. No longer can a prominent DJ that is a veteran can go out there and demand what they want working in a club, why should they pay them top dollars when they can go put a joe nobody out there and just keep slapping the sync button and they sound like a pro at 1/3 of the pay. John Jellybean is a legend, i watched one of his gigs and he has gone all digital and he was struggling keeping the mix in sync. IT'S SAD!, He has one of the greatest talents and it's just going wasted because he wants to be like the rest.
@@DJCouchKing I just bought a pair. You can get them from JUNO free post in the UK. They seem a bit quieter than the real thing, but TONAR is the only "real" replacement . TONAR is JICO.
This will be a Game changer, like "Stantons Final Scratch" back in 2003, where also a lot of pessimists was crying and whining all the day long, because of their broken hearts and blah blah blah :) It's a long overdue idea and i'm really excited about what's coming. It feels like i saw Final Scratch the first time, and back then i knew that shit will be the future, and Phase will too. I guarantee u. Even if not Phase, but at least the Technology :) And that's good, because you can use nearly every Turntable to work with, without any Needle problems (which can sometimes the worst), as long as the Plate turns, of course. Or even other things, that just rotates. And that will be the crazyest shit with that, the early 90s DJ Championchips with all the crazy things they've done will look like a Kindergarten, when we learn to use Phase in a really creative way (hopefully the coming race war can wait a little, i would like to experience that really) :D
Alter you make some good points! The Rane Twelve seems to be catching on (or Rane is just giving them away to every DMC DJ). I’m sticking to my turntables, but I’m definitely curious to see how all this develops! Thanks for watching! 🙏
The Ranes will have a hard time establishing themselves, maybe in the next 5 - 6 Years, maybe never. I'm pretty sure that very few clubs and discos will buy a Set. The most even don't buy Turntables although they need. I live in Germany, here you can be happy if they have at least any working turntables, the tonearms are then the additional standalone surprise packages of the night. And I would have no desire to lug my own equipment anywhere, especially not to a club or a disco full with drunken people, certainly not 2 turntables worth 1300 - 1400 €. That's the further good thing about Phase, you can use the cheapest turntables you can find, even a handicapped without legs and broken tonearms. It doesn't matter as long as the plates rotates. Now i'm more excited :D BTW, i've two Stylus needles here as a last backup before the New Phase Age, it looks ok so far. But i've only tested if they work. Before i use them finally, i wait till my still working 44-7s go to hell and rest in peace forever :)
BTW, i like to practice the Tips Scratch, i'm curious if phase will be able to handle that :) i hope ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aNY7gehLTcw.html
