My Favorite Microphone for RU-vid - • Hollyland LARK 150 - B...
I’m using iPhone 12 Pro Max for my RU-vid videos, and I’m quite happy with the video quality. But what about audio? I did a thorough research for the best external microphone for iPhone, and Shure MV88 was the obvious choice.

Hey Eldar, as someone who works in live Audio and owner of possibly 100+ microphones from Shure & Sennheiser. This is a great video. My views: I will be honest, I have listened to the video on various headphones and there is not much in it. Where the Shure mic will come into its own is if the app has detailed EQ and sound options, compression - but much of this can be done in editing suites anyway. The Shure mic did give a very very slightly warmer sound - but again, this is so so so fractional of a difference, that this can too be adjusted in editing suites - if its really needed! I do believe the iPhone 12 Pro Max internal mic is a stunning internal mic, but for constancy of recordings with this device and all future devices then a microphone is a great solution. I also believe personally that the best sound from any microphone from anything like this is a tie clip/lavalier microphone, we always use these when recording voice externally as we need full control and we only get 1 chance to record. But if you are in a quiet location, have several chances to record and a good editing package then either the iPhone or Shure Mic will be good.

Hi Adrian, thanks for your comment! I agree that iPhone mics are great. I haven’t done any more videos recently, so I wasn’t able to further test the Shure mic, but in my short experience with it, it does help in my cases for sure. I guess I will further test it and come to some kind of conclusion! Thanks 🙏🏻

Yeah the difference wasn’t worth anywhere near $300. Get an xlr to usbc or lightning cable and use a real mic.

Much better in regards to room echo.
@EldarGezalov
@EldarGezalov 3 года назад
Yeah, I think so too. Built-in mic is quite load, but the echo always gives it away as a ‘smartphone built-in mic’
@RuggaRoll
@RuggaRoll 3 года назад
Your voice is a little more direct with the shure. But the built in microphone sounds more resonant. Honestly the iphone 12 microphone is so good that i had to go back and forth many times to really find flaws/improvement. Does the microphone work sure, but is it worth the 140+ dollars when iphone does the job very well (at least from the presentation in this video)?? Idk.. one thing to note with phones is that they are fragile so I’m not sure if the built in microphone can get easily damaged or stuffed with dirt... your phone is still new. Thank you for this video.

Thank you for your comment. I completely agree with you, iPhone microphones are really good. I don’t like the echo I get with the stereo mic, but the overall quality is more than good enough. I was not sure if I am making the right choice getting the Shure mic, and I’m not sure yet. It is definitely better in some situations. I will do more testing in coming weeks and come to a conclusion.

I definitely heard a change when you plugged it in. I think it is better. It would be interesting to see how it does when you move further away from the phone.

Shure MV88 is better IMHO! Would you be able please to clarify few things: 1-How do you adjust you microphone settings? Do you do any adjustments in Shure MOTIV app firstly and then go to Filmic Pro for recording? Are those settings in MOTIV somehow applied to the recording in Filmic Pro? 2-What is the best setting for MOTIV+Filmic Pro? I tried many options but for some reason I still getting a lot of background noise. What do I do wrong? My last setting in MOTIV (Stereo - 27 Db - 75 degrees) and Filmic Pro (Auto Gain ON or OFF and voice correction disabled). Yours sounds much better! Thank you!

@EldarGezalov 2 года назад
Hi, sorry for late reply, I have been dealing with some personal issues recently. 1. You adjust the settings inside the Shure Motiv app. The settings will be applied TO the microphone, and will be active even when you switch to the other app. 2. Background noise will be there anyway, the mic is very sensitive. I can send you my settings, but I am not sure it will help you completely. I am using Audacity to get rid of the background noise. It is doing an amazing job

When MV88 record, MOTIVE APP shall be applied. It can be recording by Filmic Pro, but it is less gain the sound. Hence, I prefer to use the MOTIVE app when the MV88 record. it is better.
@EldarGezalov
@EldarGezalov 3 года назад
Hey, I did test it in both apps, and I didn’t hear the difference. I have even contacted the Shure, and they said that there shouldn’t be any difference, because when you set it up in the MOTIP app, the settings are stored on the microphone itself.
@51w54
@51w54 3 года назад
@@EldarGezalov Yep, Dude. I believe that it's same, even though we used other App like as Filmic Pro. But, I had figured out it is slightly less than origin App sound. Finally, I prefer to use the Motiv App is better sound than internal Iphone and Filmic Pro App.
@EldarGezalov
@EldarGezalov 3 года назад
@@51w54 Yeah, for sure. The internal microphone is going to be worse in all situations. What I didn’t like about the MOTIV video app is lack of features and settings for the video quality.
