Between CASE and John Deere backhoe, which do you prefer for its reliability and maintenance?

Sorry this has taken so long--been busy building our house. Probably depends on what dealer you have in your area. They all seem to be pretty reliable, but if you have a problem then it depends who you can get parts from. When we had problem with our John Deere we got parts out of Texas cheaper than anywhere else, and we're in Idaho.

@@judenrahim4839 The logger I worked for had both case 4x2,4x4 and cat 4x4.i couldn't tell much difference. Our personal hoe is a JD310 4x4. It's 30 yrs old and did cost us some money on repairs. I think it is as good as the cat or case. Before they bought the cat, they tried out a JCB 4x4 all big tires. I think I liked it best for the type fo work we did. Good luck on your purchase. What cat did you get?

What kind of business was your trucking business? We took a couple of trucks and hauled crude oil in North Dakota for a couple of years.

Hi Rob. I have a 1995 315d version and the converter oil temp indicator light started to come on. Any tips, I am new to backhoes, this is my first one, only just found out the convertor is inside the reverser.... I check the oil, only use 2nd gear as I use walk speed around the farm. I going to look at the pipes if any pinch and somebody said check if its plugged, I guess he means a blocked pipe etc. I noticed in your vid, you said a sensor, could it be faulty umm maybe ?? ....Anyway, any help would be great as if I have to take it off like you, I a bit screwed. Thanks Rob

Andy The first thing I would do is to pull the dip stick for the transmission and smell the oil on the stick. If it smells burnt, you probably have a problem with the reverser and torque converter. The mechanic I talked to said if it is burnt, both need to be replaced. My reverser has a small pan on the bottom. You can pull it and see if anything like metal or fiber pieces are in the bottom. If not you might try changing the oil. I don't know of any way to change the oil in the reverser so you would probably have to do it a couple of times to get the smell out. If you have or can borrow a inferred temp gun you might check the temperature on the side of the reverser and the pipes when the light comes on. I don't know for sure but I don't think the temp should be over 200. You would have to check with John Deere to get that. If it isn't hot, I would change the sensor. I think mine was in one of the pipes. When my reverser started going bad it would slip in a hard push and it wouldn't hardly move in 3rd or 4th. Sometimes an old hose will get brittle and have a flap come down in the inside of the hose and plug it but if I remember right, all were tubes on mine except the filler. The sensor I talked about in the video was the reverse backup switch on top and it wouldn't have anything to do with temp. Hope this helps. Would be interested to know what you find out. If you have to change the torque converter and reverser, I would see if I still have the name of the place in Texas where I got mine. Half to 1/3 the price of John Deere.

@@robandnell4305 Thanks for all your help Rob. I am in Australia so getting parts is a bit hard and most do come from the states anyway. I will follow your directions above and check all hoses etc...I update you once I fix the problem or find the problem,,,thanks again Rob.

@@robandnell4305 Also to add, I can move forward and reverse with ease, no issues there, just the temp light comes on showing a potential issue to come. I only move slow walking pace as the ground is bumpy, so its in 2nd gear all the time, any faster it will backhoe will bounce around too much.

@@robandnell4305 Update 01. Removed the oil from the pan and the oil is blackish but doesn't smell burnt so I guess thats a good thing. As its blackish, I guess the oil has been there for a long time, so I will be changing that. I tried to take off the pan, but its seems solid, its sealed good, maybe it has never come off before...I am unsure how hard to hit it with an hammer to free it, so I tried a wood chisel along the join were the seal and hoping it would break free, but not much look either. As I've never worked on one before, just unsure how hard to hit it without breaking it, I guess the pan is cast made or is it solid machined steel, unsure.

If the oil doesn't smell burnt and you don't have any slippage when under torque, it may be a plugged pickup screen in the pan or plugged hose,or the sensor if it getting overheated. I think the pan is cast. I think my pan is about 8"square on the flange the bolts go through. It may have been sealed with permatex aviation sealer or cat which is hard to break loose. If the bolts are all out, you might try heating where the gasket should be all the way around with a small propane torch to maybe 90-100 degrees if there isn't anything around that will melt. Sometimes that will loosen the cement. I use a dead blow hammer. If you don't have a deadblow put a board on the case and hit that. You can hit it pretty hard. I would try the chisel or maybe 2 to create a crack where they are glued. I have an old tapered spring about 8" long I sharpened the end on so not much tapper. There will be a pickup tube and filter in the pan so be careful when it comes loose. When you get the oil back in, run it till the light comes on and check the temp of the case and pan. I think it should be under 200. If it is much over 190 I think the engine temp should rise a bit. A John Deere dealer or most equipment sellers should be able to tell you what temp reverser should run at.
