I don't care what any1 says Bireli is the GREATEST guitar player in the world in my eyes, no other guitarist has ever impressed me the way Bireli does!! I'm not saying this just because of his amazing skill in manouche but i've seen this guy play metal, bi-bop, different latin styles, classical, blues, rock, fusion, and hes amazing in all of them.....is there anything he can't do!!!
I’m not young anymore and I’ve listened to a lot of musicians in my life. Well: this guy always surprises me, always raises the level of the song he’s playing so high, always he fills of wonder the music. Bireli is an authentic outsider, a real genius.
I know there are about a hundred moments of brilliance in this clip, but I wanted to point out the part around 0:32. He played the arpeggio along with the harmony by himself! Never seen that before.
Man, this concert was like a thunderbolt to the gypsy jazz world. It’s only grown from here. Lots of good features and an incredibly long concert, but the opening set here by Bireli and Florin is unsurpassable! The peak of plectrum style ever captured on film.
Hard to better Django in any case. Even harder when there's only one recording of Django doing this number - oneoffs tend towards the iconic in his oeuvre. This does it with a couple of lengths to spare. Brings a lump to the throat even after the 50th listen - people, if someone insists on telling you Gilmour's solo on Comfortably Numb is the top guitar solo ever, just point 'em right here. This is peerless.
I saw him about 1986 in an Hamburg Club , him tab the electric guitar with pierre moerlin (Gong) and maybe Hansford Rowe on bass guitar. He about 20 years old. The audience gave a 45 Minutes continuing applause after the end of the concert with full hall light. It was a concert I never experiencend before or later, visiting hundreds of concerts. The Combination of harmonic and technical perfection with overwhelming musicality makes him to talent only showing off in centuries
Are you for real? Lagrene is one of the most animated musicians playing today. Furthermore, he isn’t good. He is unbelievable. The most imaginative guitarist I have seen.
I was looking for a song illustrating Bireli's incredible sens of harmony, and unlimited creativity...Here it is !!! Bireli at his best...he is a real alien, a jazz genius...he's not playing guitar, he is singing, telling a true story...What amazes me is that during a concert you will never hear Bireli playing a musical phrase he would have already recorded, his capacity of everytime renewing his improvisations, and ability to instantly follow any musical melody that crosses his mind...Bireli every note I hear from you is a delight, I truly love your playing !
I saw Biréli Lagrène in Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles back in 83. He played a whole set with a Mickey Mouse hat on his head. He's was such a great player even back then, that after he played the first song, nobody noticed anymore.
thanks ben - I missed the final smile - came back to watch it again for the fourth time in two days - it looked like genuine personal recognition of "that went well"
