A disease is not my favourite topic to be listening in a podcast but you did it wonderfully. I couldn't stop myself from listening to it. I had a similar experience while living in Israel, to have the kibbutz experience and I fell sick. You feel lost, alone, depressed, terrible. If you go to live for a long period in a different country you definitely should consider the possibility of being ill and what to do about it. Good job, Luke. Thank you.

I also had an experience of living in a foreign country in 2004. The USA.. I went there on the program "work and travel" being a student at those times. That was an awesome experience for me! That was a real school of surviving among new people, new surroundings, new circumstances, new culture. So much to remember....

Hi. I hope you are well with your relative's Teacher Luke. I appreciated. I left my Country when I was twenty-seven years old. I went to Portugal for work. I had to learn to cook because I was on my own. I had to cook for myself, watch my clothes, and to do some shops.Today I have to say that this experience helped me grow as men and learn plenty of things. I am sure the teacher learnt a lot with this experience in Japan. Because at the and of the lesson you gave us some advice for instance, when we leave our Country and we go to another, you said that we have to try to learn the local language, and live as a local people live. It's true, because, sometimes I felt alone, but afterwards, I met some friends and we used to hang out a bit. Good story in Japan I liked it. We must treat everyone as we would like to be treated. That is the point. Teacher Luke afterwards end up in the hospital. Guess who did you find? Your former student, it seems coincidence ironically saying. But it happens. I have never been in abroad, teaching, but I would like to. Thank you, teacher.😅😆😁.

Your description of hot, humid summer including the fire-ice shifts and "mosquito feast" felt like out of my own head, except it was in Beijing. 🤣 The 10 points you drew from this unforgettable experience are absolutely amazing, especially about learning from the local to deal in a new environment. Dear Luke, I've listened to at least 300 episodes of your podcast but this one resonates with me the most! I got rid off my tonsil when I was 16, and no more those AWFUL FEVER though i still have them from time to time but not as bad. And the in-video transcript? It is awesome!

I completed listening all the episode , a little long but enjoyable, it’s so difficult for a foreigner living abroad without basic local language skill at the beginning. When I moved to Singapore with my little son from China 5 years ago , I was also very stressed at that time, even went to supermarket for groceries, always made mistakes... but after 1 year, we get used to live here, and made some friends, finally found a sense of belonging. Thanks Luke, you are really a fantastic teacher, I love all the way you teaching 👍😍

Thanks for sharing the story with subtitles. I live in Japan. Yes, it's extremely hot here, so we can't survive without air condition. But now, it dropped to -3 degrees.... I'm happy to hear that you've recovered from illness.

I live in Taiwan and can't endure humid Summer as well. I don't like air conditioner, but, still use that at night just after showering and turn it off before I go to bed. We do have something covering body while sleeping, especially umbilicus, the most fragile part of body. Thanks for your video. Short story series help me lot.

I fully understand what you've been through, Luke. This week I got a tonsil so swollen that even if I opened my mouth wide enough, I couldn't see it. The infection spread to my teeth and ear. I was terribly thirsty but couldn't drink because the pain was unbearable when swallowing. It was a nightmare. I had to sip through a straw, drop by drop. At home it's hot because there's no air conditioning, just a fan. It's 30 degrees outside and inside. I could only eat ripe apricots, and even then it felt like a mosquito sucking from them, as painful as it was. I got dehydrated from the temperature and the heat. For my throat, I gargled with chlorhexidine mouthwash. I could have a little ice cream for the inflammation, and besides antibiotics, if necessary, I also took diclofenac for the inflammation. Interestingly, it was only one tonsil, I couldn't even talk. It's good that it was only one, because if it were both, I wouldn't have been able to drink water and probably would have ended up in the hospital. But you're right about the antiseptic, it's a big pain.

Hello there Luke! I follow your vlogs so many years by now! I am a brazilian living in Japan for these last 2 and a half years. I'm not completely surprised with some of your experiences here in Japan and the sumertime is really hot like that you described! I arrived here in mid september 2019 and fortunately faced only some 2 or 3 weeks of exagerated heat! In order you can understand I come from the southerm Brazil where the climate is temperate with 32°C degrees top in the summer and -3°C in the top of the Winter season! Here in Japan I've learnt from my friends to use some vest with fans in order to efficiently cool my body on hanging around the streets in Japan! It really works properly and efficiently! But I had some bad time with the extreme heat aswell when it was closely to 40°C degrees! Most of the time the japanese folk have their own way to deal with things differently from the westerners and I realized that by now! I'm not a japanese descendent like my wife and don't speak the language but I'll make an effort in the closely future to study. Said that I have to share my experience here with doctors was exactly like yours! But I'm the only one to blame 'cos I still don't speak japanese! All we need is really to hold a very positive mental attitude towards the diferences between the cultures and enjoy every moment of it! By the way I lived very close to Tokyo and now I'm living in Yamanashi Prefecture very close to the iconic Fujiyama!

Culture shock is certain when entering a very different country . As aforementioned climate problem， true , We can't ignorr it for our own safety. Many years ago , I had backpacked there in Nagoya and I was alone and also go sick some day , I couldn't get any help but try my poor Japanese to communicate with the hostel keeper. Unfortunately,she wasn't nice and she kicked me out of my Tatami room in such early morning with coldness. Perhaps I realized that I was a lone ,. I had to help myself. Fortunately, I survived myself. Traveling is not always a blessing. Dear Teacher Luke , take care. Sharing your unusual experience in Japan.

Yes, the summer in Japan is terribly hot so I prefer the English summer. But strangely I'd really wanted to feel hot and sweat when I lived in north England where was kinda (too) cool in summer😆 Now I feel happy when the sun comes out like British people.

I've been in Ukraine for only two months after a year of learning Russian (as it was a Russian speaking part of the country) and I broke my arm there. Luckily, I'd got to know a nurse there so she directed me to the hospital she worked at and took good care of me too. As a reminder from this story I've got a picture of my arm with description in Russian :)

I also got in trouble a few years ago in China. But I was lucky. Coz God knows how I’ve got free check up in a local international clinic, which is really cool. So I felt fine, but a bit tired maybe. In that moment I thought it was just jet lag or something like that. The south climate was totally different for me (I’m from Siberia). So a doctor could diagnosed a serious disease. It was horrible, they were speaking Chinese and I could understand only one word: Bad. It made me stressed, I was in panic. But luckily the doctor helped me quickly. And now I just need to keep it under control. 😊
