Sick of Apple dominating messaging Blame American Idol 

American Idol, a popular reality show, introduced texting as the primary method for voting. AT&T's partnership with the show changed how people in the US used their phones forever. By 2008, AT&T and Fox announced more than 78 million votes had been cast via text message, turning America into a text-first society. This led to the introduction of unlimited texting plans for an additional fee per month, leading to the development of iMessage, Apple's iOS-exclusive messaging protocol. The Message, which relies on the same phone number everyone was already used to using for SMS, has become a free upgrade to texting designed exclusively for iPhone owners.
