Sickle cell trait is an inherited blood condition that affects about 3 million people in the United States. People with sickle cell trait usually
have no symptoms, but rarely they may develop dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, or muscle pain with extreme exertion or dehydration. Watch this video to learn how Airmen with sickle cell trait can prevent these problems.
(Video produced by the 3d Combat Camera Squadron, JBSA-Lackland, TX. The purpose of the video was to educate basic military trainees diagnosed with Sickle Cell trait on the symptoms and hazards associated with the condition, however, it can apply to all individuals with the trait.)

Something of significance was left out. If you have sickle cell trait and your partner has it too, if a child is conceived, there's a chance the child could be born with full blown sickle cell anemia. This is very important to know. My mom made me aware of that when I was young. Both of my children were tested when they were young, and both also have trait

@thehb2k this is not correct information. For EVERY pregnancy the chances of the child being born with sickle cell are 1/4 or 25% ....so it's just a gamble everytime.

I have the trait but was always told it doesn't effect me, so if I've ever been in pain I've never contributed it to having the trait but who knows they do hardly any research. My cousin died as he had sickle cell and I know he used to be in lots of pain. I just try to keep fit

Trait can have a host of symptoms contrary to what they say. I have the trait and many complications as the doctor explained can happen in some people. So everyone is not fortunate enough to have the trait and no symptoms

We have pain too and it's true what you said, no one really know how the experience is carrying sickle cell trait. I made a video about how sickle cell trait does have symptoms and that everyone thinks it's fake. I'm a carrier of SCT myself as well and it is painful but everyone thinks we're delusional for having such symptoms. It doesn't even need to have a trigger to have such pain. I have it daily in my wrist, hands, feet, legs and even to the point where I can't walk for a moment. I've already done bloodwork and screening and it's still HbAS Sickle cell trait, no other version. People need to be aware that symptomatic SCT is a real thing. I made a video to spread awareness, since there are little to no videos proving this. #SickleCellTraitAwareness ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bo0x4RMVGn4.html

I have sickle cell disease SS. I'm currently in a crisis which has been getting worse but they won't admit me into the hospital claiming they are at capacity due to C-19 patients. I get how severe C-19 is but so is sickle disease. I need an oral surgery which is 3 years in the making because I can't afford it. I've had 2 hip replacements due to Avascular Necrosis which has ruined my front teeth. It's so humiliating. I've postponed my graduation for medical billing and coding because I can't smile. If I made a GoFundMe for the surgery it probably won't get any support. Trying to manage a crisis at home is so hard.

When I went through BMT in the early 2000s the USAF made me sign a waiver because I have sickle cell trait. Not sure if they're still doing that with new trainees at this point in time. also after signing said waiver I could never use it as an excuse if I got tired doing PT or any physical activities or if I was to perish my family could not sue the government either.

It never goes away, its the actually how our blood is set up. The red blood cell collapses and then clogs our veins making it hard to deliver oxygen to our muscles and ultimately could kill us if we push too hard. Main this is drink water, consistently exercise and that helps a lot. However, we are always at an overall physical disadvantage but you can train to be in better shape than everyone else and it helps a lot. Trait vs disease is big too. Disease is always having these symptoms and trait is having the symptoms show during an "episode". So in other words, with the disease you're slowly dying and with the trait you can die out of no where. This is why it is important to get tested and know how to mitigate the effects if possible. I've pushed myself to hard a few times but stopped just short of loosing a leg basically. Legs will lock up on you and its just sucky. Hopefully that helps a little

Son simmons so true what you said this video doesn't tell the full truth because there are people who have sickle trait and who have had symptoms I am one of those people who have really bad arm pain and only have the trait I also have chest pain etc. I know I am not the only one because a NFL player name Ryan Clark had symptoms and even had to have his gallbladder removed he only carries the sickle trait. This percentage of people having symptoms with trait is growing but because they say it is rare they don't believe these people exist. I believe you the trait has turned into the disease in a lot of people.
@GlindaDF
@GlindaDF 6 лет назад
It is impossible for the trait (carrier of one gene) to turn into the disease (2 genes, one from each parent). Just because you have pain, and can sickle in severe circumstances, does not mean you have the disease. If you have the trait you are making about 30-40% sickle hemoglobin, but your other normal hemoglobin is diluting that. People with the disease only produce abnormal hemoglobin. Most people with trait that are having symptoms is because they are dehydrated. Most people do not drink enough water. With a sickle gene your kidneys lose water faster than normal. With the disease we have to drink 2 to 3 times more than other people do. Once you are feeling thirsty, you are already dehydrated. The reasons for people with trait to have sickling that can cause organ damage or very rarely death (a few HS and college athletes) is from heat stroke (activity in high temperatures with dehydration). The other reason is due to extremely low oxygen levels, such as high altitude flying without oxygen, or huge pressure changes with deep sea diving and submarine duty. The video is very accurate, and a long time coming. I have the disease. My sister with the trait was in the air force for many years. She did fine. With trait in the military you are not allowed to be a pilot or do submarine duty. The US military started testing for Sickle Cell (in Blacks) during the Vietnam War, early 1970's. Sickle cell is found in all races. Screening of all newborns in the US did not start until 2006. Some states started screening as early as 1985.
@GlindaDF
@GlindaDF 6 лет назад
Son Simmons the womn did not get sickle cell after having the baby. She was born with the disease and had not been diagnosed until the pregnancy. If you have the disease you are high risk during pregnancy, and that probably caused her to have symptoms, and then they tested her and found she had the disease. You are born with the disease (2 sickle genes- one from each parent; or a carrier (trait-one sickle gene from one parent and one normal gen from other parent). It is a genetic disease, formed when the egg and sperm come together. It cannot turn into the disease after you are born. A few people with sickle cell disease can sometimes live for years and not know they have the disease unless they are tested. Newborn screening was not done in the entire US until about 2006. Some states started testing newborns as early as 1985. The US military was testing Black recruits as early as the Vietnam War during the early 1970's. Although sickle cell is found in all races.
