Having trouble getting iodine supplements into your body? If so, this episode is for you. While most people who take iodine supplements will have absolutely no issues, there are a handful of people who may experience negative side effects.
But what causes these side effects? Why do some people react negatively to something that your body needs and uses on a daily basis?
Even though iodine is required to produce thyroid hormone, there are some situations in which it may result in unwanted symptoms.
There is always an answer for these symptoms, though, so don't blame iodine right away! Often, the cause is not iodine itself but other problems that already exist in your body.
Here are some symptoms that patients may experience while taking iodine supplements:
- Acne-like pustules
- Racing heart
- Sweating
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Changes to your weight
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Joint pain or muscle pain
- Changes to your hair, skin, or nails
- Thyroid gland pain
- Swelling in the neck
- Other symptoms of hyperthyroidism
- Other symptoms of hypothyroidism
Iodine can have an impact on thyroid function so it shouldn't come as a surprise that some people who use iodine notice changes in their thyroid!
These changes can result in symptoms ranging from hyperthyroidism (rare) to worsening hypothyroidism (rare) and even detox reactions like acne from the elimination of halides.
The good news is that there is an explanation for these side effects and they aren't all bad.
Have you had issues in taking iodine supplements? If so, let me know below!

Iodine is very powerful, most people are very deficient and their thyroids are empty or full of fluorine. If you take iodine the body goes crazy for a while. So start slowly.

Good fair video. If you react negatively to lugols iodine you may have following issues: Hot nodule that expresses uncontrolled hormones and should be removed. Too many toxins: fluoride, chlorine or bromide. These block the thyroid from accepting iodide to the thyroid. Mountain Dew has a great deal of bromide. Your body is reacting to pushing out toxins. Autoimmune: Hashimotos is low iodine and selenium, B2 B3 etc. The recommended RDA of .15 mg is insufficient. Other facts: Thyroid can store 50mg iodine. Body should have 1500mg Iodine is stored is saliva glands, breasts and other glands. Thyroid hormones are made in the thyroid but also ovaries make T2 and bone marrow white T cells. When a woman goes through menopause they become very iodine deficient. Iodine can help with menopause. The process of iodine organification provides transport in the lipids and produces iodolactone which is required for apoptosis or programmed cell death. Hint: cancer cells don't have apoptosis. Lack of iodine in breasts cause glands to become fibrocystic and can lead to cancer. If you have dry mouth and don't sweat low iodine. Women need more iodine than men because they have breasts and estrogen inhibits iodine. Never start taking thyroid hormones without checking iodine levels. Think root cause. Many doctors see low thyroid numbers prescribe hormones and makes you feel worse. I take 15mg lugols daily. Seek out a naturopath or doctor that specializes in iodine

I’m male, as I worked around the house my nails would split and rip they seemed thin. I saw a video on iodine and thought, I have sea kelp that I don’t use so … I take it with 200mcg. Selenium and tyrosine, two things needed for iodine absorption and conversion to T3. I wasn’t paying attention to my nails but they got thick and didn’t break any more! I let them grow to see how long I could go without them breaking; I had to cut them. They got too long which never happens. 👍🏼 It seemed to take almost a month and my thinning hair looks like it is getting thicker. I am glad I caught the video that opened my eyes to this. Now I try to catch other iodine videos. This one is very thorough, excellent video.

Dear Dr. Childs, thank you so much for this very informative and helpful video! 🙏👍 What if someone (like me) is dealing with histamine intolerance due to gut disbiosis - would you proceed with iodine supplementation in the same way? I was also diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity, and am very sensitive. My worst symptom is severe muscle pain and adrenal fatigue. Knowing how to proceed in that case - I’m quite sure it might help many others as well. So many people with histamine intolerance think they cannot take iodine, and that iodine is an actual trigger of histamine. Thank you very much!

@c.c.1900 Okay, what the heck! So I just tried iodine for the first time about 2 hours ago and took 2.5mg. First thing, my throat got a mild burning sensation. Then directly after that I started sneezing!!! I was thinking what the heck?? But I thought to myself that it must be a coincidence cause no one has an allergic reaction to iodine 😂 But maybe I have what you have a histamine tolerance?? 🤷‍♀️ I don't know what that means but I will look into it. I was just grateful someone in this comment section had something even remotely similar to my experience so far.

I take MSM to support my detox, so my reaction to getting rid of toxic stuff due to iodine intake is not so extreme. I take 4 drops of iodine every week, but only 1 drop on 4 days. I'm also taking selenium, zinc and fol acid as tablets as a special intake for 90 days. Yet MSM really helps with the initial side effects of iodine intake. MSM has so many other uses in our bodies, so I'm talking it continuously, 2 * 2 g per day. It really helps me fight the inflammations, also the silent inflammation. I also am on my day # 46 of my all carnivore adventure. Yet I only started taking iodine recently after doing my research for perimenopausal issues.

@@moiragoldsmith7052 pretty good now. The side effects of the iodine went away after 2 or 3 weeks. It wasn't a silver bullet but made some inroads. It took me down the path of realising the root cause was toxins / heavy metals etc as iodine helps somewhat with those. I tried oral EDTA for a short period followed by chlorella and coriander/cilantro and use the EDTA every so often still. That was a real game changer, got rid of the real chronic part of things in days. On a regime of occasional EDTA but daily chlorella, coriander, fulvic / humic acid, trace minerals etc I am now "well" on the face of it. Still flag at about 4pm and get a week of PEM if I do anything above pottering around the house etc, but no more waking up as tired as I went to bed! - none of this is a recommendation for anyone reading by the way. With EDTA for instance you need to really be aware of what you are doing and ensure you are back filling electrolytes and minerals etc. Hope you are doing ok!

Dear Dr Childs, I would be very grateful if you could help me. A few years ago I began taking a thyroid supplement which included iodine “just to be on the safe side”. I stopped taking it after being on it for about a year or so. I didn’t have any hair problems I was just hoping to have more energy and a faster metabolism. I now have hair loss and have done everything to find out the problem. For the past year I’ve been treated at a hair clinic with high dose minoxidil but it has no effect and my hair loss is getting worse. Could my body be reacting to no longer taking iodine?Is it possible my body got used to it (even though my hair was healthy before) and it’s behaving as though I’m lacking in it? Hormones and everything else ok. Thank you.
@lanceevans1689
@lanceevans1689 Год назад
Hi Foxy, perhaps I can add just a small bit here. First off, I believe that iodine needs to be started (and perhaps ended, though not as critically) VERY SLOWLY. I started with 300mcg and worked up. I have also found that after reaching a point that I personally felt was a bit too high, or high enough, I backed down and found a comfy spot that was quite a bit less. But I did not stop, and certainly not quickly. I'm not sure if you hair issues started while on it, or after you got off iodine. You also do not say if you got tested for TSH, T4 and T3, to know if your thyroid is actually low. You can always do the old Dr. Barnes method of using a basil thermometer in the morning. Also, sometimes, hair loss and other "bad" symptoms are a form of detoxification. I have heard of ppl who lose their hair in detox periods, only to have it grow back even fuller. I get that that is a risk and tremendously hurtful if not the case, and it never grows back. At a guess, a small amount at least a few times a week might be totally safe, and a safe balance.

my internist mentioned that over 10 mg of I2 and/or KI iodine could lead to toxicity but in reality 99% of real clinical overdose cases involve over 1-2 grams for over many weeks. he also mentioned that it's true that a hundred years ago doctors used to prescribe or give up to 1-5 grams of iodine for so many ailments, even for extended periods, but with no complications listed in the med literature. also, the body needs KI and I2 iodine as various organs need either one or both types. (nascent iodine is good, but only offers I2 iodine. the thyroid etc. need KI iodine.)

A few years ago I followed the advice of a renowned authority on iodine where he suggested taking a pretty hefty dose, sort of a one-size-fits-all approach. That well-intentioned advice caused me to go into severe hyperthyroidism, and if it had not been for my medical doctor's office phoning me to IMMEDIATELY stop whatever I was doing that caused it, I would have completely destroyed my thyroid. That experience has made me very hesitant to attempt taking iodine again. Dr. Childs, you say that it's not the iodine, but the underlying issues that are really the concern. That said, I guess the problem for me is how do I attempt to figure out what the underlying issues are. This presents a major challenge, unfortunately. Not sure how to accomplish that. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks very much for your educational videos. They are very informative.

Angioma is bromine. Bromine replaced iodine in bread in the 1960's. It is toxic to the body. The iodine is replacing the bromine in your thyroid and your body. You have been reading my mind. For about a year 2021 to 2022 I had a bit of a sore neck but ithought it was due to a bad mattress. I didn't go to the doctor because of covid. In august 2022 heart palpitations started occasionally. The ECG didnt reveal anything. In 2023 the sore neck disappeared but I started taking a sea kelp tablet and a drop or 2 of liquid iodine every day. I was put on a beta blocker. I was doing keto and intermittent fasting. A blood test in June 2023 showed low TSH. I've stopped taking iodine and sea kelp. I only took them for about 2 or 3 months. In July another ECG showed atrial flutter according to the cardiologist. He also said its hyperthyroidism that's causing the heart issue. He sent me for thyroid antibody tests. They never gave me the results so maybe that's a good sign? I've been carnivore for nearly 2 months now. The heart palpitations seem to be gone, maybe due to the beta blocker and magnesium. They want to test my TSH once a month. No medication for this yet! Have you got any comments or suggestions please doctor?
@Brightys
@Brightys 8 месяцев назад
I hope you have asked your doctor these questions. Why were you put on a beta blocker if your ecg was negative? It sounds like your tsh might be on the low side but not super low or fluctuating which might be why they want to monitor it instead of treating it.Heart palpitations can be a symptom of hyper thyroid . Ask your doctor to test free t4, free t3 and reverse t3 and ask for the results of the antibody test. It is the only way to know for sure you are hyper or even hypo thyroid( some people get hart palpitations when hypo). Tsh doen't really tell much and can be higher or lower from iodine or other medications. Beta blockers have a lot of side effects too. I hope you feel better soon! P.s. If your doctor won't test t4/t3, find a new doc because it sounds like they don't know enough about thyroid disease.

Some other vitamin caused her sleeplessness. So i stopped giving out vitamins, not even the safest D3, to troublesome people.

Does anyone get throat numbness when using iodine? About 3 days after using 1 drop of Lugol's 2%, my throat felt numb.

Hello Dr. Thanks for very informative video. For me T3 and T4 are in range (T3 hover near lower range around 0.8 to 1) but, my TSH is below lower range hover around ( 0.4 to 0.48). Can it be considered as Subclinical Hyperthyroidism. And in that case should I consume iodine supplement?

that is not hyperthyroid - it is optimal according to Ray Peat.

While traditional MDs put all their faith in the TSH reading (and as Childs says, often refuse to even test T3/4, I do not put much faith in it. For example, iodine can send your TSH in all kinds of directions, regardless of your T3/4 numbers. TSH is simply a "request" from the pituitary for your thyroid to make more T4. It isn't any indicator of what is actually getting produced.

@@lanceevans1689 thanks for your reply. If I understood well then TSH level does not specify much so, it can't be subclinical hyper thyroid or hyper thyroid. However, may I know the reason for lower T3? I have tested it almost 3-4 times last year and every time it hovers in the lower range. Thanks again for your time 🙂

@@soulfeelings90 Hi. High doses of iodine, as in Dr. Brownstein's books, can shoot yr TSH way up. But it does slowly come down. But the high iodine also doubled my T4, so this is good. But do high iodine with great care. It is very effective, boosts energy for many, but can induce issues if gone too far or too fast. Take it slow. As to good T4 levels and low T3, I would say that your issue is (mostly) at the conversion stage. Generally that means your liver which does ~80% of the conversion. Clean diet, no drinking, supplements like desiccated liver pills, beef liver meal 1-2x a week, etc. did a good job for me. Also, if you are male, check your testosterone as test and thyroid interact/support each other. If low, small amounts of the herb Tongkat Ali can be helpful.

I keep getting diarrhea no matter how little Iodine I take each day. J. Crow’s 5% one drop for over a month, after 3 days I have to stop the drop and take a day or two off. I take all the Vit. C, B2&3, Magnesium Oxide, selenium, LMNT electrolytes. but I still get diarrhea. What am I doing wrong?
