This video will teach you how to properly do side lateral raises. Form is extremely important to avoid injury and activate the correct muscles when learning how to do lateral shoulder raises. This popular shoulder exercise will help you grow stronger and better-looking shoulders. This exercise should be added to the end of your workout, AFTER your main shoulder training. You can do lateral raises with resistance bands, dumbbells, or kettlebells. If you are looking for a finisher to your shoulder workout, lateral raises are a great addition!
Tips for how to do lateral raises correctly:
- Rotate your shoulders externally slightly
- Hunch forward slightly to engage your core
- Lead with the shoulder, pause at the top, and lower the weights or band with a 3-count
- Stop lifting when your arms create a straight line with each other (think airplane wings)
- 3 sets of 10-20 reps
- Focus on your form and go lighter than you think

I've been doing side laterals wrong for 40 years. Back in the day everyone did them with internal rotation.

I learned them that way too! Everyone was told to "dump out the water bucket" with internal rotation. Some people have shoulder structures that allow them to get away with it... most people will eventually experience unnecessary stress/impingement.

various forms of lateral raises using a number of weights is always exciting , this video has highly informative little bits of details that make this exercise much more effective

Side lateral raises is much harder than front raises for me especially try doing both arms at the same time; but it's effective in building a better looking shoulder make it worthwhile.

Agreed. They feel more natural. Stretch cable bands are amazing too for PEAK TENSION at the top of the motion.

I always keep my shoulders Pinchback like squeezing my upper back when I go up. Sort of like squeezing my trapezius.

I always seen people do lateral raises but never knew how to properly do them. Now I do thanks to you. This seems like a really easy exercise anyone can do. I'm going to add this to the list of exercises I'm going to try into the new year to get my bikini body ready!

After watching your video I just realized I hardly have any exercises in my routine for shoulders... I guess cause I never really knew many good ones like this. I separated my shoulder a long time ago so some of these hurt but I also feel like it will gradually make it stronger!

I have been feeling slight numbness on the undersides of my thumb tips and index finger tips. Sometimes slight tingling on the left underside of my wrist. From what I read it might be median nerve compression. I am not sure if my range of motion with lateral raises, bicep curls, and/or pushups might be aggravating my nerves somewhere between my fingers and shoulders. What do you think could be causing the slight numbness on my thumbs and index fingers? How can I do lateral raises and bicep curls minimizing strain on my wrists and the nerves down my arms?

So many variations. I just left a video showing arms bent, thumbs down as the proper technique. Also looks like as soon as you are coming down you are slightly going back to nuetral or internal rotation. I would expect pinkies pointing down with staying in external rotation through the entire range of motion.

Larry Scott the first mr Olympia showed a video on shoulders where he explains to do them as you were pouring out a bucket of water. I think l would rather do a lateral raise as Larry instructs rather than a skinney gym rat who has never won a compition in his life and all the sudden he is an instruction expert.
