Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner perform "Who Will Love Me As I Am?" from the musical Side Show. On The Rosie O'Donnell Show, October 27, 1997. Like my clips?? Check out my radio station, Sho-Toonz, at www.live365.com...
Neither of them are screeching and neither of them is flat ever...this amazing. They are acting this song as well as singing, the parts where they are screaming things is part of the emotion of it all, and quite honestly if this is bad, then I think its sickening and fierce. Both of their Belts are so clear and you can hear every single word they're saying. Plus the lyrics of this song are amazing. Do you know the story of the actual Hilton sisters? This music and everything is else is on point.
Ricardo Bauler in the musical violet “I am to your right as you watch our show” because she is actually in the left but when you are watching them it is flipped
Everyone is praising Alice, but damn Emily is a real earth mother with that alto voice. so soulful. I love it. Belting that low is not as easy as everyone thinks, but she doesn't beautifully without sounding like she is trying to hard.
Like a fish plugged from the ocean Tossed into a foreign stream Always knew that I was different Often fled into a dream I ignored the raging currents Right against the tide I swam But I floated with the question Who will love me as I am? Like an odd exotic creature On display inside a zoo Hearing children asking questions Makes me ask some questions too Could we bend the laws of nature? Could a lion love a lamb? Who could see beyond this surface? Who will love me as I am? Who will ever call to say 'I love you'? Send me flowers or a telegram? Who will proudly stand beside me? Who will love me as I am? Like a clown who's tears cause laughter Trapped inside the center ring Even seeing smiling faces I am lonely pondering Who would want to join this madness? Who would change my monogram? Who will be part of my circus? Who will live me as I am? Who will ever call to say 'I love you'? Send me flowers or a telegram? Who could proudly stand beside me? Who will love me as I am? Who could proudly stand beside me? Who will love me as I am?
It’s always stuck out to me that Emily’s body just remains completely still while she’s doing these ridiculous belts, as if it’s actually literally no effort at all
Coming from someone currently putting on this production (me), this song is FAR from pitiful. It fits perfectly into the show. The lyrics are unparalleled and very meaningful. In "Could a lion love a lamb", the "lion" is Terry and the "lamb" is Daisy; it makes perfect sense. Would you give the composer more credit if I told you he also composed Dreamgirls? Because he did. Furthermore, you clearly don't have a good grasp on "Broadway". Broadway doesn't tone anything down. Everything is dramatic.
Who would want to join this madness? Who would change my monogram? Who will be part of my circus? Who will love me as I am? Who will ever call to say I love you? Send me flowers or a telegram? Who could proudly stand beside me? Who will love me as I am?
I swear if they brought back Skinner and Ripley for a revival of SideShow, it would sell like hotcakes. AND they'd get that joint Tony they SHOULDA had the first time. ;-)
Unfortunately they don’t make show like this anymore or stars… all we get now are the Boring shows like meansgirls, outsiders, Water For Elephants . No good scores or actors

I soooo miss you Rosie. You made us aware of such great talent. We live in the middle of nowhere, we have no way of knowing. Thanks........Bring me more joy Rosie, You are missed, so much!!!
Wonderful, underrated show. Alice is currently in Next to Normal, delivering the best performance I have ever seen on stage (of over 700 shows seen). Next to Normal is the most amazing, heartfelt show on Broadway, see it!

What's your complaint about her in N2N? Her voice does sound more strained in it, but it's hard to blame her she's gotten older, and I feel it works for the character. Diana is very stressed.
I CANNOT plead enough....If you want a real treat get their disc Duets. It is simply one of my all time favorites...duets from a number of Broadway musicals including Side Show
Its incredible how they actually look like twins, it took me a second to figure out who was who. And then there's the community theatre production my brother was in with a Vietnamese Violet and an I don't know what but definitely not Asian of any kind MALE Daisy. Both talented as hell, but really hard to suspend disbelief enough to buy that they're conjoined twins.
I love Alice, but I can tell she has tension in her throat here, which isn't a good thing. I have that problem too though, so I feel like some singers might struggle with it for a while, or throughout their career. But that could be what's sort of ripping her voice. Plus, N2N has a very intense score. There were times when I thought even Jenn had trouble singing, and she's young! So basically, I love Alice Ripley no matter what her vocal imperfections are. :)
This is most definitely live singing. Yes the orchestra track was recorded for this segment but they ARE singing live. Stop talking about things with which you have no authority. Anyone who sings for a living would tell you that this is live and authentic as were all Rosie Show performances.
People romanticize about this show, the majority of them having not seen it on Broadway. It flopped for good reason. The inane closing I Will Never Leave You got titters all over the theater. The stupid title of the song set the audience up for howling at how literal it could be taken. SS was well performed and at least original but like the finale to Ballroom, another flop, the creators miscalulated the audience's emotional response to the show's ending. Side Show was also cheap looking.
amazing, I used to tape the Rosie O Donnel show and save the live and Broadway work. this, The Lion King and Lena Horne's last live stormy weather were my faves glad I found this thank you
@amazinggarrett1 i strongly disagree. i do think that alice is amazing but i think emily shows much more control and power in her performance. she is vocally stunning.
Belting notes or singing the lyric separates the ladies. The newer show was more romantic and impassioned; the latter cast did not try to out belt the other and through their performances became believable as sisters and are stronger actresses. The revival had no reports of titters and hooting but engaged the audiences through the story telling and transcendent performances.Davie and Padgett moved us with their acting, shaping the lyrics truthfully as equals and not competitors. Check out the documentary with the original cast. Hugh Panaro states quite clearly he and the ladies often tried to outdo each other- friendly fire, of course, but is that the story about the Hilton sisters? I think not.
Raoul Anderson I agree with you whole heartedly! i felt like the revival felt like the two sisters were talking to each other rather than belting it to the audience! Also, where can i find the documentary? I would love to find it!
Hi! Im so sorry but I cannot seem to find the documentary! It would be great if you can share the name or the uploader so its easier to find? Appreciate it!!
+konrox www.broadway.com/buzz/178425/take-two-hear-the-fascinating-history-of-side-show-from-the-original-stars-creators/ This is the first video of 5 total ones. I love hearing from the original cast and creators, it's so interesting!
@22poeg Where is anyone even performing this show? . It gets tiresome to hear people rave about something they have never seen. When I was in college in the 70's I had already a great knowledge of musical theater history and I would get scripts from the licensors for shows we were considering and when you read the book to many flops, like Mack & Mabel or Anyone Can Whistle, it's obvious why many of these shows did not succeed. Side Show was just awful despite the leading ladies.
@heidiemandcarlesare you asking about the very last note? If so, d# or e flat. If not, could you please be more specific? :) there's a virtual keyboard online that you can use when you need to know a note :) I don't hink I'm supposed to post a link, so do a google search for "virtual keyboard" and it should probably be the first one that pops up :)
The point where they are conjoined does not affect vocals. The only reason would be personal issues. Regardless of what factors caused it, their tuning was terrible.
Alice Ripley has always kinda had difficulty with her tuning, but honestly, from SideShow to Next to Normal, her acting, character, and stellar vocal quality make up for her tendency to go flat. Her hearing started going at a pretty youngish age, but she still performed and did incredibly :D (Though occasionally, yeah, the pitch is distracting)
You may be right in your review of the the original Broadway show. For whatever reason, this show has turned-out to be a direct hit-to-the-heart of a new generation of lovers of Musical Theater. The popular reception of SideShow does not seem to be turning out your way. But. in time, I guess audiences trump critics, and SideShow now seems to be a last-stretch winner. Go figure. G. @heidiemandcarles are you asking about the very last note? It's a d# or and e flat. If you want more notes, please specify and I'll tell you. Also, if you do a google search for "virtual keyboard" there's a website with a piano that plays the notes to hear which is which. It's very helpful in sitations like these :) (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links, so I don't want to get in trouble)
@amazinggarrett1 i strongly disagree. i do think that alice is amazing but i think emily shows much more control and power in her performance. she is vocally stunning.
@thedifferentkiddo actually, as an alto, we have notes that even wonderful sopranos have difficulty with, and even if you can hit a note, the rest of your tone quality can be difficult to maintain in a low register. different ranges have different abilities and it gets annoying to have an entire section devalued.
@xobreebreeox No i meant skinner, it just doesnt immediately start with her singing at 2:13. I mean u can tell which one is singin with 'soul' also. Thought that would help
i think is because is a very different kind of play, and because of the role she played in next to normal, i think, is more about the interpretation than sounding good anyway is just my opinion. thats why i love her in both musicals =) have nice day!
does anyone know where I can find the duet they Did on this rosie show "I will never leave you?" Not the tony award version, but the one where emily skinners riffs like crazy??
@savagegardenrox You totally misinterpretted what I was saying. Alice can hit those. She has no difficulty singing in the alto range. I've seen both in live performance, and Alice deserves praise. Don't try and contradict me when you're ignorant on what I'm saying.
Gotta give Rosie her props for getting these acts on her old show. I don't agree with her on a lot of things, but she has got some fantastic taste in musical...except Taboo.
People are so quick to judge. How about you get out there and do what these two ladies are doing?! No? Didn't think so! Alice and Emily BOTH sound amazing here!
oh hot damn. so i knew the two were fricken amazing. i knew alice was fricken awesome and fierce, but this is beyoned fierce. like, words cannot describe. seriously. ah i'm still recovering from this guys.
Emily is amazing but speaking as an alto, low belting is pretty damn easy. High belting is what gets me....because I'm an alto. It's all about your voice type and more importantly your technique.
Like this is way too amazing. I love these women, they are bearing itall. I looked up the Hilton sisters after watching this, and man are these portraying, the tragic, hopeful and interesting lives of these two STRONG women. They portray that strength even whole singing this song that sounds hopeless. That's true acting!
Oh My Gosh! I absolutely love this song! I want sing it but I haven't been able to find any of the music yet. I can't believe this musical wasnt very famous! I love it! And I want to see it!!!!
We're doing this show for my summer program and this is my favorite song so far. IT's so sweet and I can apply it to a few of my characters, as well as myself in some ways.
The both of them together is like a piece of heaven!! I love Skinner's support and beautiful soulful voice that really carries the song and I love Alice's emotion, passion and awesome voice. They both did a great job here.
sorry, kids....this song is taped and recorded. Have another look...the movement of their mouths and the actual song is off. Anyway, I saw the closing matinee and the show was electric...both were excellent. And, the show was incredible. Alice Ripley spoke after the bows and mentioned that there was a possibility that the show would re-open in April 1998 - but that never happened.
To all of you who praise Emily and state her importance as an alto: Alice could easily hit those notes, too. Both are talented, but Alice's acting far surpasses that of Emily's, just as her voice does, too. I'm sorry, but Alice deserves to be applauded for her outstanding performance.
Truly horrible song, flat, awful screeching, cringe-worthy sentiments, completely forgettable uninspired tune, ugly singing. (especially towards the end.) The creative team should have been put in their own side show. Or fed to the lions. When did musical theater turn into Showtime at the Apollo/Star Search/American Idol? These kinds of vocal calisthenics (let's see who can screech the highest without bursting a blood vessel or pulling out a vocal cord!) usually are put there to mask a gener
What fun! Listening to skinny Broadway babes playing pitiful characters feeling sorry for themselves...in song- a song that is lame even by pop song standards. I'm sure the real Siamese twins were much more interesting and less "feel sorry for me" than the limited imaginations of the writers could envision. "Could a lion love a lamb?" lol....Tell me that idea or image would have been in there if he didn't have to rhyme something with "am" He could have just as easily put in, "Could I eat a pl
