Possibly, yes. You might also benefit from a telescope mounted in reverse on your glasses, or one held in your hand and used as needed to expand your field of vision. It is impossible to say without seeing you for an examination so that we can determine the type and amount of side vision loss, and demonstrate some of these options and more. I'm sorry, but I can only prescribe special glasses by examining a patient and having the patient try a demo in office as well. The glasses featured in the video have certainly helped a lot of my patients, but some patients -- especially those who have adapted to their vision loss over a number of years like your son has -- do not see enough benefit and they are not prescribed in that case. As far as someone in Australia, unfortunately I don't know of anyone. I recommend searching for low vision providers on Google and/or contacting an optometry school or university. --Dr. Long

Taken in order...they are not useless for some patients, but from the first demo, I told you his reaction was not good... you said "well maybe he just doesn't understand." You wanted them to work for him so badly, which is understandable and admirable. We told you double vision while gazing into the prism is normal, and expected, actually. We took accurate measurements, but your father didn't trust us and tried to take his own while saying, "I am a doctor." We would never scam anyone. Our business is based on referrals, and integrity is the order of the day. We would not quote a price that was less than our cost for special glasses. I would be interested to hear your phone records. We are empathetic and feel sorry that things didn't work out for your father. Holly has vision problems and does not work on commission. Any small amount of profit made after helping your father function better would have been worth the 3 or 4 hours we spent trying to help. We never promise ANYTHING will help our patients. That is why we do an evaluation and sometimes spend hours with a patient, as we did with your father. "Just try to sell you"... in spite of your persistence to receive the glasses at your reduced fee, Holly and I both agreed that I would not prescribe them to him. If you have adapted over a period of time, it's true, you may not see a benefit. In fact, it might just be confusing to try to adjust to having prism in the glasses. However, as a low vision doctor for over 25 years, I'm still regularly surprised by what works and what doesn't. So, the only way to know for sure is to be evaluated. --Dr. Long

So, yes, the glasses are available to "move" vision into non-seeing fields, but as far as being successful in a practical way, I would say the chances of that are very low. I have prescribed, but rarely, sectoral prisms, like the SVAG, mounted inferiorly to "bring the ground up." It can work as an early-detection-system of sorts for things that might cause a tripping or fall hazard, but it could also end up being more confusing than helpful. These glasses typically are not helpful for glaucoma. I'm sorry. Additionally, I would not know where they would be available in India. --Dr. Long

Yes, possibly. I must do an evaluation and trial with the fitting set so you can see whether or not it will help you. It must be in person for this reason, as well as to take precise measurements for ordering. Please call to discuss your case and schedule an appointment when you are able. Dr. Long

I would love to see him to see if it might help -- he needs to be evaluated to see if they help and then he would need trained at the dispensing visit. Yes, but it depends on the particular laws in each State. Unless expressly stated to be prohibited, many times I refer patients with hemianopias to a Certified Driving Rehab Specialist who can evaluate an individual's ability and fitness to safely drive. -- Dr. Long

Oh my gosh thank you so much. I’m from Ontario Canada, and the field requirement is 120 degrees. I’m not sure how much I will have once things have settled in a few months (recovering from brain radiation side effects). I feel like it’s coming back, but it’s good to know there’s also a way to train people.

Aziz, I believe I have emailed with a relative or acquaintance of yours about this already. Special glasses can sometimes help with RP. But they cannot be prescribed without seeing a patient for an evaluation.

@@drwjlong Sir, I live really far away and can't take the risk of going all the way to the United States without being sure that these glasses will work on me. It will cost me a fortune to come all the way from where I live to your clinic. If there is a chance my sight can get better using your glasses, then I'll gladly start applying for a Visa for medical purposes and make an appointment with you!

@@azizjabrane6323 I'm sorry but there is no way to be sure they will help you without an evaluation. Also, your sight will not improve. They are a prescribed "tool" to potentially allow you to make better use of the remaining vision that you have.
