Sidney Weinberg: From Janitor at Goldman Sachs to CEO | A Biography

In 1907, a 16-year-old boy with a thick Brooklyn accent shows up at 43 Exchange Place - a New York City skyscraper home to several Wall Street brokerage firms. He’s looking for a job, but no one wants to hire a middle-school drop-out who barely knows how to write. After more than a dozen rejections, he manages to get a job at a small brokerage house on the third floor called Goldman Sachs. Not as a broker… but as an assistant… to the janitor. He spends his days shining partners’ shoes and cleaning out their tobacco-filled spittoons. At the time, no one paid much attention to this random kid from Brooklyn, but only because they had no idea who he would eventually become.
Fast forward a few decades and that boy, Sidney Weinberg, was now the CEO of Goldman Sachs, the very same investment bank where he first started as a janitor’s assistant. He still has knife scars on his back from street fights as a newspaper boy, but Sidney is now the most powerful financier on Wall Street, steering Goldman Sachs through the Great Depression, advising U.S. Presidents and underwriting some of the biggest IPOs in history. This is the story of how a poor boy went from sweeping floors at Goldman Sachs to building it into the global financial powerhouse we know today.
- ABOUT PROBABLY SOMETHING -
Hey, I'm Kunal. I'm a Swedish founder in NYC and ex-investment banker (Lazard M&A). You can think of this as my personal business blog, but in video format.
I create videos about finance, business strategy, M&A and mental models to help me better understand our complex business world. Through my work, I've mostly covered tech, media, healthcare, sports and holdcos so those are naturally the topics I gravitate towards.
My goal is to constantly challenge myself to become a better business operator, investor and thinker by studying world class founders, financiers and investors. I hope this channel will help you do the same.
Just sharing what I'm learning along the way and documenting my journey - nothing on here should be considered financial advice.

Why aren't you getting views? I don't understand. You really should change something. You deserve to have 10 million subscribers by now. Here are my suggestions: 1. Make videos on recent and trending topics. Very few people care about old times. This is why your newsletter video got so many views. 2. Your thumbnails definitely need some work. You could hire someone to do this for you, it's really cheap. 3. Definitely change the name of your channel. Your own name is actually good, but you could try something else. 4. Nobody reads that big description, so make it shorter. Add some links to your website or other social media profiles. RU-vid needs this. 5. The first 15 seconds of your video are more important than the rest of the video. Don't waste any time. Start telling the story right away, ask an interesting question, or do something else to grab the viewer's attention. 6. Your camera framing and position are not good. Check out other RU-vidrs who have a lot of views and see how they do it. 7. The text you use in your videos is not good and not engaging. Change it. Use entire sentences when the text appears, not just words. 8. Definitely start a blog under your own name. People will read it. 9. Add some affiliate links to your videos. The algorithm needs these. 10. Start your newsletter as you said and tell people to subscribe so that they subconsciously decide they can't miss your videos. Make a list of 20 things you think you need to change and research on them. I will check your channel again in 12 months, on this exact date. I promise I will visit it and see how much you have changed and progressed. See you on September 13, 2024. Until then, work hard and smart, brother.

The value-packed comment section is a rare sight on small-scale channels! Totally agree with most of the points recommended.👌 The frequency of content is also crucial unless the content is at the level of channels like kurzgesagt. Probably, he is single-handedly doing everything and is not able to give much time to YT content creation. But Kunal's channel has a scope for becoming something!
