Compilation of the Siemens Desiro Electric Multiple Units with Classes 350, 360, 380, 444 & 450 plus the Desiro City Class 700, 707 & 717 units. * 5:25 - Clip is of 3x South Western Railway Class 450 units rather than Class 444 & 450
The 350's, 360's, 380's, 444's and 450's have a funny sound when they arrive and depart, same with the 700's, 707's and 717's being on third rail power. Great trains overall.
Basically, the sound is the sloid-state Thyristor-chopper power controllers regulating the current to the motors. The old Bakerloo & Picadilly trains use the old switched-resisors to do the same thing; hence they gove the "clunk-tick-tick-tick" Sound.
