I've seen her do this song with several different ensembles of different instruments. Last night, I saw her do it with a different guy on double bass; plus electric guitar and saxophone. I've also seen she and Ethan do it with a guy on piano and a different time she and Ethan with two guys from Jerry Douglas' band. I've seen her with her husband, too; but I have yet to see them do this song together, in person.
She said it was one of those snippets of song you get in your head that you can't think of the song and it comes back a few times. She finally figured out which song it was and then it was off to the races. That part I understand because I get snippets of songs like that. How she constructs a song is far beyond what I can understand. They are very complicated while sounding very simple. I know the songs that she covers are familiar to me and they are not songs I particularly like but, when she does them, I'll loop them back to back for hours on end. Today I did an experiment. She has a song she wrote, Redbird. I heard it once and skipped to another. Today I looped it while I did other things. Now I like it a lot.
Saw her do this last night; but the trio had a pianist/accordianist. She's had various different trios with all different instruments on this Winter's tour.
I was at that show too; but I just noticed your comment now. Yes, the opener, Scott Mulvahill was amazing. As I recall, he joined them for a different song towards the end. He will be doing a headlining show at Stoughton in November. I saw Sierra at DelFest and she did this song with a quartet that included 2 members of Jerry Douglas' band. That was on the third stage, indoors. The next day, on the main stage, she was beginning this song, again with Sam on piano; but a few notes in, there was a lightening strike and power surge that cut power and ended her set abruptly. If you love Sierra, then try to make it to DelFest. She is there every year and guests with everyone and really steals the show. I saw her play as part of 9 different sets in 2 days. It was my first time seeing her play with her husband. Among other sets, she was part of Ronnie McCoury's Mandolin Extravaganza, that included himself, Sierra, Ricky Skaggs, David Grisman and a young, little known guy whose name evades me. She blew them all away. They all stare in awe when she takes a solo. There was one point when David Grisman, who was sitting next to her, gave up and stopped playing and leaned on his headstock with his mando on his knee as he watched in humility. Del himself strummed along on guitar for some of the set on her other side and made some hilarious faces of shock as he watched her tear it up. I have several cool pictures of such scenes.
