Sierra Leone’s farmer and trader Sengbe Pieh was captured by slave traders in 1839 and sold to Spanish slave trader. During the voyage to the so-called New World, he led a mutiny aboard the Amistad, an event that galvanized the abolitionist movement.

Our national hero. I've seen sources where they've written that the Mendes had a mutiny but these were a people fighting for their freedom and human rights. I hope the spirit of what happened on the Amistad can be adopted by all our leaders as an example.

The word "mutiny" was used by the slave ship crew. That is why it is described as such, but "uprising" is a better word.

Sengbe Pieh freed himself and other 48 from slave captivity. He's a hero!

Do you think John Quincy Adams, America's 6th President and Defense Attorney of the Amistad slaves, would have succeeded to free Sengbe Pieh and co if the slave traders were Brits or Americans and not Spaniards?
