In this video I use the Scott Satterlee load development technique with the Sierra 150 SMK and Hodgdon Superformance. We actually load 25 rounds instead of 10, and also increase the charge weight only .1 grains instead of .2 to try and develop our Pressure / Velocity curve.

I get great results with the 147 grain Hornady ELD Match and a max charge of Superformance powder in my rifle with a 1:8 twist barrel. No pressure signs at all.

I noped out on these when I saw the twist recommendation. I'm glad to see that you tried them and saved me some money! Looks like an awesome bullet that most people won't be able to shoot. That's ok, since those that have the twist to handle them will probably see some awesome performance. Sierra's awesome, but physics is physics. At least they seem to have given an honest twist recommendation on their package! On another topic...I'm wondering if you've been monitoring the throat erosion in your RPR? At 600 rounds I've seen like .024" of increase in max OAL for bullets with my TC Compass. I have no idea whether this is good or bad. Do you have any max OAL numbers from when your RPR was new, and have you kept track of your round count, and what is the current throat erosion you're seeing? Just curious. Great video, man! I'll try to send some more viewers your way since I probably won't be testing this bullet myself.

Hey JRB, thanks for the comment/ I know you have saved me some coin, so glad I can help. I will take the old gauge back out and take some comparison measurements. I think I am somewhere around 1k rounds, I need to look at my log book. I will get back with you for sure. BTW if you want that brass annealed, I will be happy to do so.

It's hard to say. My Defiance/Bartlein/AICS rifle hated the 6.5 American gunner 140gr, but the Aero M5E1 shot it better than the match ammo. Someone needs to figure out the science behind this stuff so it isn't an experiment every time.

I'm just getting into reloading, but this will be the second projectile I try. I shoot the Hornady 147gr load 81505 out of the box right now in a Bartlein 1-7.75 to 1-7 gain twist barrel and they are incredibly accurate. I can't wait to see what I can achieve with handloads. After that I will try these Sierra 150 grainers.

I have had excellent luck with the 147 ELD-M as well. My 1:8" twist handles them just fine, but it just can't handle these 150's. With your twist rate you should have better luck than I. Good Luck.

Great, I just loaded 100 rounds of the stuff with H4350 powder. 40.3 gn. Unfortunately, I have another 100 on the way. I’m shooting with a Tikka T3x tac A1 chambered in 6.5 creedmoor that does have the 1.8 twist barrel. I loved how it shot the hornady 147 grain, with only 38 gn of H4350. That’s a very accurate round. I’ll just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

My 6.5 Creedmoor was formerly a Remington 700 chambered in .243 Win. It was a gift from grandfather in 1977. After the barrel was shot out, I had Bartlein true the action and rebarrel the gun with a 24" stainless, 5R, 1:8 twist barrel chambered in 6.5 CM. The folks at Bartlein talked me through the options. The 1:8 twist was best for me because I wanted to be able to use the gun with bullets ranging from the 95 grain varmint bullets for coyotes (at distances less than 250 yards) on up to the 143 grain ELD-X for larger game and long range target shooting. They told me if you go with a faster twist that over spins a bullet you will have more induced drift at long range and if the velocity is high enough you could even have your bullets come apart. If all I was going to shoot was coyotes, I could have optimized the gun for smaller bullets by going with the 1:9 twist. If I wanted to optimize the gun for the larger bullets, then 1:7.5 or faster would have been best. In any event, Bartlein was great in explaining the options and doing the gunsmithing. I now have two of their barrels and they're both great shooters. FYI

+njgrplr2007 I will have a better idea what I want to do when this one burns out. I am interested if I'd actually see a difference. I have been able to hold 1/2 moa accuracy with some loads, not really sure what more I will be able to expect.

Mopar, the velocity will be slightly lower with 1-7.5. And the accuracy nodes are typically 2730 and 2820 respectively. The 147elDM is the maximum for 1-8 twist according to Litz's calculator on Bergers website.

Hey Mike, I figured I was pushing it, but can't live life not knowing you didn't try right? Half the reason was to really see if Superformnace would put up the velocity. Hornadys data on that is garbage. I wished I would have pushed it harder before now.

To determine the proper rate of twist , to stabilize bullets....Bullet length, divided by, bullet dia. then 150 divided by answer. then answer times bullet diameter. will give the proper rate of twist needed to stabilize the bullets. 1.492/.264= 5.65151515, 150/5.65151515= 26.541555 X .264 bullet diameter = 7.00697052, OR a rate twist of 1 turn in 7" ... to get bullet RPMs 720 X mussel velocity FPS, then divide by the rate of twist will the produce the R.P.M.s of the bullet. the above figures are on the 150 grain Sierra MKBT for rate of twist. you will need a 1 in 7" twist for your Creedmoor. GOOD LUCK!

Stumbled across your channel recently and subbed. I guess RU-vid knows what I like and what to suggest. LOL Interesting and nice to see you are not shy about trying things, e.g., these 150 gr SMK's in an 8 twist and especially the so called Scott Satterlee load development technique.I was intrigued, although a little skeptical, about the idea of being able to narrow down the best and most forgiving load for long range shooting in just 10 rounds when I first heard of this method last year. I, like you, immediately tried to "modify" and "improve" the 10 round method by doubling it to 20 rounds or more to increase my odds at success. I thought of 3 variations, the one you used in .1 grain increments being my second. My first was to just load and shoot 1 extra round at all the same prescribed .2 gr increments up the ladder thereby duplicating the test at the same time under the same conditions to compare the results of each set separately and collectively. This would be kind of a way to test the test. Also, knowing the ES for each step would be very helpful. My third idea was a hybrid that would shoot and look more like what most people are used to.

+Jiminico welcome to the channel! I am testing this method on the channel for the time being as well as many other things. Hi Chris, I think you misunderstand the methodology. When choosing the starting charge we went to max and dropped the value by (the number or rounds tested x the powder differential of between rounds). In this case max was 46.6 so our starting charge was 44.2 grains. They are fired from low to high looking for pressure along the way. I hope this makes more sense. BAR

Hi Ad Mar, I have seen you in the comments before. Welcome back! Depending on what powder you can find the Hornady 147 is the best performer with the highest BC that I have found. Bolt Action Reloading I just got my new 1:75 barrel as well. I have been using the 153 as we discussed. But I just ordered the Berger 156s and the 150 smk. Being that Rl26 is impossible to find, and I’m out. I am franticly looking for a replacement powder that with allow me to get these 150 range bullets up to 2800 without getting too much primer flow. So I am now considering super performance, and Rl16, and other powders you recommend to get these big bullets moving that fast?
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 4 года назад
I would look to see what RL 16 can do before you find pressure. Its possible that superformance may get you some velocity but likely at the expense of sd. Might want to look at the 135 atip with the velocity you can achieve and there BC if they shoot it's hard to beat them with a heavy bullet. Sure are expensive and not always available though.
@TheOnsetHunter
@TheOnsetHunter 4 года назад
Bolt Action Reloading yeah rl16 is the first I will try. On my old barrel I got 2761 with the 153s at 42.9gr and that was the max I felt comfortable doing without popping a primer. Any other powders your recommend trying? Quickload is telling me Norma MRP looks like it would have the same result as rl26. I have to use the larger bullets cause I’m trying to touch 3000 yards. The 153s were super consistent at 2800!

(Unless you have brushed your firing pin) the best BC bullet is the Sierra 150, but I cant stabilize them. The 140 rdf is very finicky. The 140 eld-m usually works pretty well but the 147 has the better bc between the two.

Like I said, I’m sure it’s a valid principle, just too old to change my ways, I guess. I’ve always been a load it, see what it will do and then make adjustments as needed. This is just too time consuming and wasteful of components to my way of working. Great if you want to experiment and theorize, but I’d rather load and go shoot. If it’s consistent and groups to 700 yards, I couldn’t care less where the nodes are or even if there are any nodes.

I'm sure these OCW and 10 round experiments are valid, but I'll be damned if I can ever make it through an entire article or video on these tests. They always become sooooo boring. It seems you never see any actual 3-5 shot groups out to range. It's like they're a never ending test procedure with no end game or final solution. Someone PLEASE show me the test procedure, explain these 25 shot targets, tell which load is chosen and why and then show me some 3-5 shot targets at 100-750 yards.

Hi Gary, If you can't make it through a long video I am not sure its for you. Obviously the premise is to find a forgiving load where changing the powder charge does not affect the velocity. the write up is here. When I get all the pieces I need to put it together I will do a video on it, but I am sure it will be longer than 5 minutes. Getting to a long distance is a challenge where I live.
