Sierra Railway #3, First Weekend of Operation in 2020 with Rebuilt Whistle | (HD)

2020 has been an interesting year, especially for railfanning. I finally got the chance to see my home railroad of Railtown 1897 SHP see operational this second weekend of October. Sierra Railway #3’s whistle was recently rebuild by Rizolli Locomotive Works and sounds loud and clear.

@@ferrodu5759 More than likely a stock studio recording that was heavily edited. A crew from Sony Sound Labs did visit Railtown 1897 in 2003 to record sounds for the film however the 3 wasn't even in service at the time. The No. 28 was used and the whistle it wore during the visit was a NP 5 chime of some sort which was MOST DEFINITELY not used in the movie. It's almost impossible to say what sounds they recorded that day actually made it into the film. The recorded everything from torches being lit to squeaky door hinges.

@@robintheslavewr1513 it is. Look it up. The train shown is based on the perre Marquette 1225, but the whistle was sierra 3.

Sierra #3 was the engine used as #1 "Cannonball" in the 1957-58 TV series "Casey Jones".

The flatcar featured in the video (SRR 323) was not the one that was utilized in Back to the Future III. The flatcar that was used in the filming is SRR 325 which is still stored on site however it is currently inoperable.

What was wrong with the whistle before? I heard it had a crack, but it seems to have lost a ton of its character now (yeah, I'm a sucker for the polar express sound). EDIT: some good discussion, I do understand the whistle was beyond worn out and didn't even resemble the bttf/pe sound anymore. Hats off to Rizzoli for the work they did.

The lima 5 chime is not the polar express whistle in the movie you only hear 3 notes coming from the whistle it's real whistle counter part is a Baldwin brass roundtop 3 chime it gets its authortive sound from the steam hitting the brass causing it to vibrate

@@robintheslavewr1513 Interesting, So what happened to the classic whistle (the 3 chime, I suppose) heard in The Polar Express and Back to the Future? That's such a classic sound, and the first thing I think of when I think of Sierra number 3. The whistle in this video (the 5 chime) has a similar sort of sound, but doesn't have the magic.

@@KnapfordMaster98 the polar express's 3 chime doesnt exist it could be created if you get the right people like brass casters and people who can identify the 3 notes from the movie. The echo you hear in the movie is actually the sound of the brass body of the whistle vibrating at a rapid rated giving you the weird magic feeling in the body

@@KnapfordMaster98 the 5 chime from Sierra 3 was used in bttf3 it soulds like the polar Express's whistle because of the crack in the bowl causing mainly 3 chimes to sound louder than the other 2

Unfortunately it’s been cancelled for this year. The turn-out in the past has been incredibly huge, and Railtown figures it’s for the best not to risk it this year.

Pulling in reverse allows for better visibility on the way down the grade so the train crew doesn’t have to look around a set of cars. They run around the train at Rock Siding and then can pull up the hill with complete visibility ahead of them.
