Good to see more lenses coming on the market with internal zooming and focusing. Only thing holding this back from being a perfect lens for me is the lack of a custom function button.

Thank you for another great review. While I own quite a few 16-35/2.8 + 35-70/2.8 combos on various systems I have been building a small kit based an Sigma f/2 family of DG DN I series primes. To that I have been using the 28-70/2.8 DG DN Contemporary and looks like I will add their new 16-28/2.8 since it appears to be a great compliment. Still only need two lenses to get coverage from 16-70 just now with less weight and overlap. Appreciate your work.

This is a perfect lens, right in the middle of Sigma's 14-24 and 24-70or 28-70. This I would take on my A7R3 to family events where this lens is lighter and smaller than the other lenses. The focusing back and forth was remarkable, demonstrating no focus bounce seen on some of the Sony's latest lens. Wow, this is a winner. Going to check on your review of the Tamron lens and see which comes out on top for my next purchase.

Thanks for the thorough review, as always. I was already being indecisive about which ultrawide to add to my Sony FF setup... I am torn between the Sony1224GM, Sony1635GM, Sigma1424 or Tamron1728... I am honestly not sure if this new lens is the perfect balance for me, or will just compound my procrastination issues! I think I'll wait for delivery of the 2470GMii and see if I still need an ultra wide after moving from the Tamron 28-75 to the 24 of the Sony.

Thanks for a great no-nonsense review as always, Gordon. I have the Lumix S1 and I'm very curious to see what the performance re. autofocus is like on that body (so far I've only seen Sony reviews). I'll keep an eye out, and hopefully it'll arrive at my local distributor here in Saigon Vietnam in the L-mount form, and I can check it out for myself :) Cheers!

What I think...? Well : you are always delivering great reviews and useful real-life-based opinions. Your analysis make our choices easier, and we can make smarter ones. Whatever our "system", habits, experience, emotions (yes... if truly sincere, we must admit emotions sometimes come into play when it's about gear choice). Thank you Gordon. Useful review, thank you. i like the direct comparison with the Sony 16-25 F4 PZ. For me the real choice is between the Sigma 16-28 F/2.8 and the Sony 16-35 GM F/2.8. Sigma wins on cost, size, weight, better filter size to work with Kase magnetic filters. 16-28mm range is fine.. 28+ mm catered for with my 24-105mm. The only thing the Sony lenses might win on is sharpness. F4 PZ seems very similar in this review, but how much better is the Sony 16-35 GM F/2.8?? (And is it worth it).

interestingly, the focus breathing shown in the bottle example at 16mm was really stark. I normally am not really worried about breathing, but this was a bit too much.

what i must choose sigma 16-28 f2,8 or sony 16-35 f4
@tonycowburn1208
@tonycowburn1208 Год назад
I also opted for the Sony 16-35mm F4 PZ. The sharpness seems so much superior to the non-Sony options, and it is SO SMALL and SO LIGHT. Just a dream to use, and the zoom-by-wire is absolutely fine in use.. I was concerned it wouldn't be as user friendly as a mechanical zoom, but no such concern in use.

Bit confused by this weather sealing setup. Only at the bottom? does that mean you can take it outside and your camera will be ok but the lens will die?? I mean either make it weather sealed or not, not something inbetween?!
@cameralabs
@cameralabs Год назад
As far as i know, it's only sealed at the mount. None of these lenses are designed for bad weather, mostly to stop moisture and dust entering the camera.

No I didn't try them both. I was convinced by another review/test i read that the Sony 16-35mm PZ had superior image quality, as good as or better than the legendary Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GM. And the tiny size and minimal weight were big factors for me. So I bought the Sony 16-35mm F4 PZ. I like the ability to zoom onto 35mm rather than restricted to 28mm, but the sharpness is second to none, and the size and weight are stunning... these are the winning factors for me.

I just got the PZ. I love the size and the PZ is pretty cool. I have the Tamron 17-28 and find the range limiting. That is why I'm not sure this one is for me. Pros of the sigma 2.8. Pros of the sony increased focal range.
